Awesome! Rachmaninoff's 2nd is one of my favorite pieces of music in the whole wide world!

So...do you do Rhapsody in Blue? One of my favorite clarinet parts is the long slow pitch rise. Gershwin is a God.

Bummer, it's TG weekend.:(

What's TG?

I've never played Rhapsody in Blue... the clarinet part is challenging to say the least!!

Rhapsody in Blue is such a great song...I love the way the clarinet comes in in the beginning. Goddamn, Gershwin was brilliant.

WOW!!! I haven't done my annual shameless plug.

Performances of The Yeoman of the Guard are currently under way--opening night, last night, was quite good. This year in addition to Mrs. Dallas on the podium, the Dallas rugrats are onstage as extras in the crowd scenes, and the principal clarinet is... well... modesty forbids.

(And yes, in case you're wondering, this has led to a shitload of logistical complications.)

Now, I know you're all saying "Dammit! I missed opening night!!!" Don't worry, there are still four performances this weekend. Just visit their web site for more info.

My local brass band (with me on flugel) played a blinder (by our standards) last night, including Georgia, Rock around the Clock, The Way We Were (featuring yours truly), the theme from Lord of the Rings, and other favourites. Just thought you should know ... :o

Did you tape it, Limey?

Oh, good Lord, no! We're not THAT good, but we enjoy ourselves ...

Here we go again....

November 11, the Immaculata Symphony. Rhapsody in Blue, Copland's Rodeo and a choral selection from The Tender Land, and Randall Thompson's Ode on the Virginian Voyage.

November 16 - 19, five performances total, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County. This year it's The Mikado.

Also longtime Cellar readers may remember my intention to stop playing after this semester's concerts. The principal clarinetist is stepping down, and if I quit now I would miss, literally, the only chance in my lifetime to play Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. This is way too much of an inducement. So, for the time being, I continue.

Rhapsody in Blue,

Dude! Do you get to play the bitchin', rising solo clarinet whine in that awesome, awesome piece of music?!

Gershwin was a frigging alien. Brilliant.
SteveDallas • Oct 27, 2006 2:09 pm
Nope. I mentioned the other guy who's quitting? The Gershwin is his chance to go out with a bang. (I do have several nice moments in the Copland, however, including a solo marked "lazily" in the Saturday Night Waltz. Clearly it's a lick I was born to play. )
