would it be an acceptable use of this forum to provide assistance with things we specialize in at work? ie...if there are plumbers on here and I have a question, i could look through, find a plumber and ask questions? Does this already exist? anyone opposed to this?

I'm a wage slave at a very large corporation. I do software. If you need help with Perl/ksh/bash, I can probably help you. If you need help with C/C++/Java, I haven't done that in so freaking long that I might be able to help you, but I'll probably need to consult a book or a co-worker. If you need help with Visual Basic, I can help you, but you probably need to help yourself too.

I'm an odd jobs software man for a largish entity. If you need help with Java, Perl, PHP, any variety of HTML, Javascript, XML, XSLT, SQL or InstallShield, I may be able to help. I also have a lot of experience with software interface desgin, and graphics. Additionally, I've done a fair share of technical writing. Oh, and I've developed websites for the blind.

I worked as a PC repair guy for years, and I still hobby around with that stuff occasionally, so I may be able to help with computer hardware/software woes. I spent a while as a manager of group of support technicians, so if you're a supervisor having a problem with one of your underlings, my advice may not be totally worthless to you, but your milage may vary.

I have spotty knowledge on automobile repair, mostly confined to things I have had to learn to repair on my own over the years. This is also true of around-the-home repairs. Again, your milage may vary.

I've been doing ametuer (digital) photography for awhile, as well as photo retouching and modification, with surprising success. I've also done some heavy photo restoration.

I'm a jack of all IT trades, master of none at a miniscule institution of higher education. I've done a little bit of everything, but I'm strongest in networking and systems administration. Although I'm candidly forced to admit that my administrative duties are causing my once-impressive technical skills to atrophy.

I am a scale tech , i work on truck, rail , and process scales , coin counters in casinos ( you don't get to see them , but they are behind the scenes ) In-motion truck , box , and rail scales ( i can weigh a truck at 80 mph , a loco at 3-5 mph and a box at 360fps). Hell if it wieghs i can generly work on it . I work for one of the Larger scale distrubiters for MANY brands of scales , Mechanacal Hydrolic and electronic . I am a jack of Many trades Master of a few . I am a guy that you can drop a box of parts on his desk and i can sort thru them and make all kinds of stuff .

El sicómoro has a bachelors degree in psychology, management skills (3 years of that shit), could be a customer service consultant (over a decade in the field)...in general, just a think-outside-the-box kinda guy. In addition, he can provide fine insults, smart-ass quips and bizarre humor upon request or provocation.

It can be , I have gotten to mess with all kinds of wierd stuff , AEI equip , spread spectrum wireless modems , bar codes , PLCs , etc...
Then again it can suck HORRIBLY !!! like working to fix a rail scale after a de-railment in the snow rain and mud , or trying to figuer out why a casinos count is off just for one type of coin (some times i get comp meals in the steak and lobster tail restraunts in the casinos ) , or the all time worst going to a renedring plant ( for you folks that don't know what that is where the critters that are to sick to be slautered and all the parts of said critters gets cooked down to raw proten and bone meal ) . But hell some body HAS to do it and it HAS to be done correctly .

I used to work in social services, but I don't want to go into it again, as much as I admire people who do. I recently had a short (1 1/2 yr) stint as an IT technician. Now I'm trying to get a start in graphics (getting my 2 yr degree in December).

I do web design, but I still have a lot to learn there. I want to go into video and motion graphics. After I showed my video projects recently (especially "Malaika"), I had people tell me I should try making family slideshows for people.

But, what I want to know is, is there a plumber around here? Because I really need one. :D

I do all sorts of things. .I've worked on : optical systems, circuits (both A & D), controls, software development (varying from tax assessor's software to business systems to embedded systems to HMI to web stuff ), DBA stuff (Oracle. SQLServer, PostgreSQL, MySQL), writing technical documents, and data analysis.

My workload now is mostly software, some HMI, some controls, and pre 802.11 ISM wireless ....but I'm moving ever so slowly back to engineering.

(Programming Laguages: Basic , Assembly (6502, Z80,68XXX,X86), Pascal, FORTH, Fortran, C/C++, PHP, Python )

I'm a computer programmer. Java at the moment, but C in the past. I don't do VB, I don't do .NET. And I don't do COBOL (but for different reasons), so Rich's job is safe from me.

Heh... my mom passed me a system administration job opening at a local college (local to her that is) half-jokingly suggesting I could get the job and relocate where she could see the grandkids more often. She was a little taken aback when I told her I wasn't qualified because they were insisting on lots of experience with Exchange and other M$ products that I've never had the pleasure of using.

I've worked a little with anaerobic digesters at a hog farm here in Colorado, and did some investigation of AD on dairy farms, so I know just a little about the technology.

It's interesting that you brought that up because I was just discussing AD with some people from the Department of Homeland Security this afternoon.

I'm a perpetual college student, myself, gone back after working for ten years. I've done market research(phones, person to person, business to business, focus groups, etc), quality assurance for cable TV (i got paid to watch TV, no kidding), worked in a government mail room during the anthrax scares, worked in a data mine, done data processing, been a medical assistant, security guard, and I love to cook. I volunteer with a local animal shelter, so know a little bit about animal health and handling. I can run a LAMP server, program a bit, build a computer, and raise insect larvae for fun. The Bobs say hi. (All my larvae are named Bob. They like to eat carrots. And each other.)

I also like long walks on the beaches, world peace, and kitty cats.
