10/17/2003: Happy crab

This was widely covered elsewhere and many of you have probably seen it, but it's SO IotD that I saved it off anyway and kept it for the first Friday not otherwise spoken for.

What you're looking at there is a crab, a little less than an inch in size. The happy face is actually a pattern on the crab, and when it left its shell behind and still had the markings, they knew it was the real deal.

An 8-year-old kid brought the crab to the Toba Aquarium in central Japan. He found it on a beach.

The crab is described as "Gaetice depressus" in all the official captions out there. As if it was some sort of scientific name. But when you think about it, "Gaetice depressus" describing a crab with a happy face?
PILATE: Centuwion, do we have anyone of that name in the gawwison?
CENTURION: Well, no, sir.
PILATE: Well, you sound vewy sure. Have you checked?
CENTURION: Well, no, sir. Umm, I think it's a joke, sir,... like, uh, 'Sillius Soddus' or... 'Biggus Dickus', sir.
GUARD #4: [chuckling]
PILATE: What's so... funny about 'Biggus Dickus'?
CENTURION: Well, it's a joke name, sir.
PILATE: I have a vewy gweat fwiend in Wome called 'Biggus Dickus'.
GUARD #4: [chuckling]
PILATE: Silence! What is all this insolence? You will find yourself in gladiator school vewy quickly with wotten behaviour like that.
BRIAN: Can I go now, sir? [slap] Aaah! Eh.
PILATE: Wait till Biggus Dickus hears of this.
GUARD #4: [chuckling]
PILATE: Wight! Take him away!

Monty Python is still funny. It's a humorous part of our rich cultural heritage as English-speaking peoples.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was still funny when I'm old. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't considered funny, either.

MP are still funny now. That's like saying Johnny Cash had some great songs twenty years ago. The things that made them great then are still what make them great now.

I defy anyone to find a hipper comedy reference while riffing on "Gaettus depressus".

I'm sorry but I have to disagree, comedy is not like a great song you can't equate humour with music. How many times do you listen to a favorite piece of music in a year. Now listen to the Parrot sketch the same number of times kinda loses it dont you think.
Thats why I dont think Jim Carey is funny. Jerry Lewis did it 30 years earlier same act different time.
But there again I might just be a humourless sad old bastard.

I don't think ALL of Jim Carrey is funny, but I do like a few of his things. And I have "Always look on the bright side of life" as an MP3 and I listen to it quite a bit in my 3000+ winamp playlist, but it still brings Life of Brian to mind, and I *still* chuckle. True Comedy is timeless.

"I like chinese" makes me laugh my ass off. Now I realize MP is completely deriding me and my culture, but shit, I laugh, you should too.

no....i still hold my breath to hear him say... the only reason its still on the perch is that it's been nailed there!

still funny...after all these years.

On "In Living Color", Carrey was extremely funny and inventive. His movies however don't do it for me. The movies take every gag to the peak, then hold it 3 minutes too long.
Monty Python has knocked my socks off many times but a few of their bits like the dept. of funny walks, well... But it doesn't matter to me because I'm a lumber jack, and I'm ok.:D
