8/6: Flooded cat

30 are dead and hundreds homeless due to flooding in Southern Poland. And one would hope that the photographer had the heart to rescue this flood victim there after taking the shot. Cats don't like that water stuff much...

More or less same flood occured a few years back.. after usual political crap.. nothing was done to prepare for next one..

..soon the political fingerpointing will subside.. and.. nothing will be done about it again.

Did someone rescue the cat??

Pictures are usually taken to guilt/disturb viewers/readers into thinking and possibly doing something about a situation. Picture takers themselves rarely participate.

it'd be a very heartless bastard who met left the cat indeed.

On the other hand, it just occurred to me... 30 dead and hundreds homeless, and here we are all concerned about the welfare of this cat?

I mean, I feel the same way - I want the cat saved and pretty much don't care about the people. I just didn't think everyone else was as misanthropic as I am.

I guess what it comes down to is that the cat is almost guaranteed to be innocent, while the people are almost certainly guilty in some way or another.

I don't think it's that people car more about cats than other people. It's that we have a "face" to latch to in the tragedy and we bond to that "face", but not to the invisible others in the tragedy.

If it was a picture of a drowning person, I'm sure we'd all want to know if that person was rescued, and hope that he was.

Likewise, we're probably not nearly as concerned about the many other faceless cats and dogs and pets that drowned.

spot on jtm. Although tony does have a point - animals aren't capable of causing hell the way humans are if you know what i mean. But i am a VHEMT (shameles plug) supporter so...

Don't make me choose some people I know over my cat...

Don't worry, CellarDwellars. I have it on good authority that the kitten was rescued and donated to the caring people at Bonsai Kitten, and will soon be adopted by a good family!

Well, shucks Syc. It's mighty nice of you to say. <scuffs his toe at the ground and looks embarassed by the compliment> I work hard at it. Maybe, some day, I'll reach the point where I can read about thirty dead humans and all I'll be able to worry about is a stupid f***ing cat! Gotta aim high, ya know. Gotta have goals. =)

Why, that's... shocking... deplorable... appalling... a... a... a fabulous idea for a new lawn game: CAT CROQUET!

*laughz - you have way too mch time on your hands
but it wouldn't work sadly. Croquet would require the head intact.

On the other hand, it just occurred to me... 30 dead and hundreds homeless, and here we are all concerned about the welfare of this cat?

Hee, reminds me of the movie American Psycho, a scene where he was threatening to kill a cat, but then shot an old lady who interrupted him in the act.

I remember being very relieved at the time, only realizing the irony later. I guess one has to be a cat person...

It's from a 3 or 4 year old newspaper.

If only Ohio hadn't been mentioned, we would have imagined that the "Image" cat had been rescued...
I will simply assume that the same impulse to rescue a distressed is alive and well in Poland. Thanks for the happy ending photo.
