10/7/2003: Singapore shark protest

The "interesting protest" department, with just the official cap today:

Clad in a shark suit, a Singaporean student re-enacts the death of a shark during a protest in Singapore September 7, 2003. A group of 20 university students staged the re-enactment at the end of a charity walk in a bid to have the slaughter of sharks banned. In many parts of Asia shark fin soup is a prized cuisine and a symbol of generosity and wealth, but the hunting of sharks has depleted some shark populations by as much as 90 per cent, with around 100 million sharks caught each year for their fins.

I don't understand why people want to protect sharks. They're sharks! They're bloodthirsty killing machines who've remained at the top of the food chain for millions of years. Isn't it time they had a little natural selection?

I know there'd be changes in things, but I'm pretty sure we'd be able to handle it.

We should only save the cute or profitable things.
See the albino gorilla, who qualifies for both.

That would be a KEWL hallowe'en outfit!!

Speaking of which, anyone going to a hallowe'en party and dressing up? If so, what are you going as??

I thought I'd dress up like a heartless bitch....but seeing that's so close to my every day costume, most folks won't be able to tell the difference.

Perhaps if I wear a smile........

Hrmmmm

Some one sent me this after last winter's heavy rains in Europe. You just never know when Jaws is going to pop up.

with around 100 million sharks caught each year for their fins.

Well, most of them never make it onto the boat. The fishermen haul them up the side, chop their fins off, then dump them back into the ocean to bleed to death.

Sounds reasonable to me.

OK, I don't mind people killing sharks if they were going to use them. The meat is really quite good and the sopranos need the skin for suits. But killing a shark for its fin, an elephant for its tusks or goose for just its liver just rubs me the wrong way. Needless waste is wrong on any level. :)

Well, last year I went to a party as a member of the vast right wing conspiracy ...

This year, if the party happens, I might go as a pirate. I had considered going as a witch, but having done the non-costume costume last year, I have to wait a bit, I think.

I go as a witch *every* year! :D

I think my wife is getting a bit cranky about the fact that we never get to do anything for our anniversary since it is on Samhain, and we are always having a public ritual...
