RSS

An RSS feed for the IOTD would just make my day.
Undertoad • Sep 23, 2003 10:35 am
I will work to make it so... I've known people are interested in this, but it's always hard to know exactly when it stops being a nice thing to have and starts being critical.

Thanks for asking, Syc, so I didn't have to look technologically backward ...
Happy Monkey • Sep 23, 2003 11:09 am
It's what shows up in the sidebar of sites like slashdot or kuro5hin.
dave • Sep 23, 2003 11:31 am
Yeah, like these two are reading slashdot or k5. :)

Go here and be enlightened:

dave, I'm surprised at you. I expected you to jump all over this tard's improper use of tags.
dave • Sep 23, 2003 12:24 pm
He knows he's a tard. I don't need to point it out any more. Kinda hoping he'll forget the $20 I owe him until I'm done getting fucked by this whole fire and car deal.

So, what RSS aggregators are people using?

I tried out AmphetaDesk, but its lack of categories is annoying.

I tried to try out NewsMonster, but it didn't integrate with Firebird well (and in fact, I ended up having to re-install Firebird).

Any gems I'm missing? I haven't looked <i>too</i> hard, but I think RSS is something that would suit me really well.

1. With the way some of you have bitched about k5 and /., you make them sound unworthy of attention.

2. I'm not ashamed to admit my technological retardation.

3. Dave is a ballbag, but that's nothing new.

4. I don't trust a thing Tob says b/c I suspect the heat has finally gotten to him...plus I'm still pissed at him over killing the Aloysius Party.

5. I haven't forgotten about the $20, but that's not a big deal.

6. D, we're on for Saturday. I'll call you tonight.

Duh...does this make the Cellar more searchable or available or something?
Undertoad • Sep 23, 2003 7:49 pm
It's really only for IotD and Sycamoreland "blog view".

It's a way for headlines and information to be shared quickly by the site, without people having to actually browse the site to see if there are updates and such.

Alphabet soup simplified and run through the UT filter of mangled misunderstanding! HTML is how people write web sites that other people can browse. XML is, sort of, a way for systems to write web sites that other systems can browse. RSS is an XML version of a regularly-updated website, with just the headlines and stuff in a format that everyone agrees on.

So if I make the blog views generate XML RSS, other people's systems can kinda sorta "subscribe" to them.

Tob is looking at RSS aggregators which read the RSS versions of sites and try to present you with the information you want... I looked at one of them for about 15 minutes, and found that I preferred reading all the sites by hand instead.

But it seems that other people are coming up with new and better ways to use all this information, and eventually it may actually replace browsing for some uses.

Auggh, it's so hard to keep up well in many different areas of technology... hard to know what's important to keep up with.

K5 is really cool. It's Slashdot that's terrible.

Tell ya what syc, if that new Opus comic strip does well, maybe I'll revive the Aloysius Party ten years from now.

k5 is cool in the same sense that Maggie is a man. Maggie <b>used</b> to be a man. k5 <b>used</b> to be cool.

This was back in about 1998 or so. 1999? The years blur together. But I digress. It's been a long time since it's been cool, and it's because of their "community". Everyone is an asshole. Or the people that post the most are. k5 is like a self-important Cellar with a hundred times the users. Everyone has this self-stroking intellectual masturbation thing going on, and it makes real discussion impossible.

It was good when it was smaller because it hadn't yet attracted those people. A few of them were there, but they were easy to ignore. It's long past critical mass. It needs to be dumped and started anew. The problem, of course, is that all the old people will sign up. And that ruins it again.

Whatever happened to this? I kick myself every time I realize how far behind I am in IOTD.
Undertoad • Nov 21, 2003 6:31 pm
Sorry, I suck :(

I wrote it on my whiteboard though, so this in theory guarantees that I will look into it again and perhaps write it in another color on my whiteboard.
juju • Nov 21, 2003 6:44 pm
I love my whiteboard. It makes it so easy to keep track of random thoughts, and it also helps reduce paper clutter. I actually got mine after seeing how cool Darclauz's was about 10 years ago.

Currently, it has baby feeding times and quantities on it. You've got to anticipate, see..
