Got Gas??
Just a catchy phrase to get ya'll to read my thread.
It appears that quite a few Cellarites are from the East Coast while I'm all the way over here in sunny San Diego, CA [West Coast represent:thumb: ] Anyway, I tore myself away from the compooter (misspelling intentional:p ) and drove into town (I recently moved out of the ghetto into the countryside) and my butt-hole puckered when I saw the price of gas!!!! It is up to $2.25/gallon for cheap-o unleaded. This, of course, really sucks because I'm 30 min. away from the nearest gas station and my new truck gets shitty gas mileage.
To make a long thread short, I was wondering what gas is going for in your neck of the woods? [No matter what state you hail from, please contribute:) ]
I'm just curious if Diego is the only place getting screwed!!!
Philly = $1.70 regular / $1.90 premium

No connection between those two facts, of course. Everyone driving a gas-guzzler always has a perfect rationalization...erm...*reason* why they need a SUV, a minivan or a truck.
Some of us still remeber when folks with licence plates ending in an even number could only buy gas on even numbered dates....
The Mobil up the street from my house has unleaded at $1.75 a gallon (I live in Philadelphia)...I believe that is the second highest amount I have ever paid for gas. (I paid $1.80 at an Exxon station in MD during a price spike 3 summers ago.)
By comparison:
November 2002: $1.40
November 2001: 95 cents
August 2001: $1.30
Here in Baltimore, the Queen of the Patapsco Drainage Basin, a gallon of unleaded regular is going for around $1.58 per gallon.
Well, here in NW Arkansas the cheapest I've seen was $1.59, the most expensive $1.69. For plain unleaded, of course in both instances.
Some
rationale as to why prices have jumped in the Northeast in the last month or so.
Maybe this
site will help you, LUVBUGZ.
I understand most of that Reuters article, except how the shortage of MBTE, will cause the prices to stay up until Labor Day.
Oxygenated gas doesn't come into play here until November. I doubt they're making it that far in advance.
One of the major problems the refiners have, is the myriad of regulations means there is literally over a hundred different recipes for different areas. When supply runs low in one area the ajoining area with surplus, may not be able to ship some over due to the regulations.
aside- Low gasoline supplies mean home heating oil supplies are probably low since the refining goes hand in hand.:(

Well, my *reason* for driving a gas-guzzler relates to my career. Unfortunately, I need a 4X4 vehicle because I work in the desert and other areas where terrain is an issue. I'm not rich enough to afford a vehicle for city driving and one for my work. So, rather than run the risk of being stranded in the middle of nowhere USA by myself (cell phone's often don't work either) I drive a gas-guzzling truck. Believe me, if the auto industry would make one that got better gas mileage, I'd get it.

I think I do remember something to that effect too in my younger days.
I suspect part of the problem is that damaged line in Iraq. Don't know how much it truly affects us, but I would think there is definitely some psychological effect going on. Plus with general tensions up in the Middle East again...thank God both our cars get 25+ miles a gallon, and we only drive them 100 miles a week or less.
Oil heating for the home...that was a completely foreign concept until I moved out here. Never heard of it before then. But if you're right Bruce, that could mean another expensive winter for everyone around here...especially if the weather is as severe as last winter.

Thanks for the gas price link. I've visited it before, but figured by the time I drive all over hell to get the cheapest price I'll basically break even figuring in the gas I wasted to get there. Now that gas is significantly cheaper at some stations, I'll probably use this info. more often.:)
I read the Forbes article......since CA is still using MTBE until Jan. 1, 2004 I don't think that is the cause of our (CA) price gouging. It's seems more like a guy farts in one of those refineries or a semi-driver leaks a few gallons in transport and all of a sudden the price goes up 50 cents a gallon:p
More
rationale on the gas price rise.
Here in South Carolina the gas is $1.51 reg. and $1.70 premium. Sorry to hear about the prices all around. Now I have a question with prices, is it just me or is milk getting pricey too? It is $3.10 for generic and Coberg is $3.99
Hell, Coberg? I only drink cows milk. Sorry Six, I couldn't help it.:D
Is that for a gallon of regular 3% or whatever you have there?
Coberg is apparently a dairy down in the Charleston area (damnit Bruce! Use Google!).
Skim (Fat-free) milk is $2.71 a gallon at Acme here in Philadelphia. That is a bit higher than 6 months ago.

Thanks Syc...I read the article, but I still like my "guy farted in a refinery" theory:p

Milk has been pricey here in San Diego, CA for a long time. I can't remember when it jumped in price due to CRS (can't remember shit;) ), but I do remember everybody getting really pissed off about it. Also due to CRS I don't recall how much I recently paid for some, but they started selling it in two-packs (2 gallons) here so people think they're gettin' a better deal:rolleyes:
I barely use a half-gallon by the expiration date...2 gallons? Shit...3/4 of it would go bad in my house.

Remember Syc...."Milk does a body good";)
I paid $1.679 today for regular unleaded at Sam's Club, where I get a 3 cent discount off of the average price at surrounding stations, so We're looking at $1.70, $1.71 here in general. This is damn near the highest price I've ever had to pay for gasoline. I think I may have had to pay $1.80 during a brief spike a few years ago, but then I wasn't driving an Explorer at the time.
I still don't really know what my average gas mileage is as I've only had the beast two weeks, and for one tank I pulled my camper and a load of camping gear, and for another I had a back end full of PA gear. I'm guessing I'm going to average about 18 mpg when all is said and done.
Sort of figures that the first actual "gas guzzler" I've owned since the 70's would be at the time when gas hit a near-historic high here in KC.

Els...watch out for Maggie, she's not big on us idiots who drive gas-guzzlers. Thank's for the gas price info.:) Something's telling me it sucks being a Californian for more reason's than one. It would appear from all the posts so far that I'm definitely gettin' screwed at the gas pump (NO comment necessary from you Bruce:p )
I'm in North Carolina and we're paying $1.62/gallon. A couple months ago, in Vegas, the prices got up to $2.12. I seriously considered taking the bus.
Milk is $3.29 a gallon for 2% in Vegas, and I pay $1.39 for a half gallon of 2% in NC.

Did you get video?
On the way to work this morning, I saw,
Low grade 1.71
Mid grade 1.79
High Grade 1.86
And this was the 'cheap' station!

In 1988 I paid $1.49 per liter in Canada, filling a 45 gallon tank.
Yesterday, the Mobil near my house was up to $1.839/gallon, up 8 cents from last Sunday. When I fill up tonight, I'll have to see if it's jumped any higher.
Although, I still have a half tank...we could easily get to Baltimore on that Monday...maybe I'll wait until Monday night.
Bruce, is that $1.45 Canadian or $1.45US? Either way, that must have been during a gas crunch there...it's about 70-90 cents (49-63 cents US) a litre now: $1.86-2.39 US a gallon.
That was $1.49 Canadian. I was 300 miles from the nearest public road and the only game in town. When the pump rolled past $100 the guy got down and looked under the vehicle.
I live around Pittsburgh, and little more than a week ago, Regular was $1.30/gallon, give or take a few cents. Then I started college, came back yesterday for Labor Day weekend, and the same station is now $1.69/gal. It was weird, I looked over at my mother and asked "Hey, is that right?"
Hey, what college did you wind up choosing? You haven't been here in ages, and I don't remember if you ever said where you were going...that, or I'm forgetful and/or too fucking lazy to go look around Cellar.
Don't tell him Chewy. He'll be moving in and using your books.:D
Rte 352 & West Chester pike, Amoco was $1.79 & $ 1.97.
i paid $1.59 for regular unl. thursday here in houston but i've seen it as high as $1.70 on the interstate between here and san antonio. i remember a few years back i was flying an angel flight and had to pay $3.02 (not a typo! ) for 100LL av-gas! talk about pucker factor! i bought just enough to get us back to houston!
I'm paying $1.99 for premium unleaded here in Seattle.

How do you know you're not buying *almost* just enough?
At $3.02 you could fill your 747 for $172,140.
Put avgas in your 747 and you need a new 747 :-(
And a new credit card, but I can put in my '57 Chevy.:D
Still $1.839 here, but I only paid $1.609 Monday at an Exxon in Perryville, MD (40 miles NE of Baltimore).
It's down to $2.19 for cheap-o unleaded here, WhooHoo, we're still gettin' screwed:blunt:

$1.84 in 2003 is same as $0.35 in 1968, $0.24 in 1948, and $0.17 in 1930. IOW price of gasoline has only returned to normal price levels.
At $1.84 in 2003, the price of gas in 1974 would be $0.49 per gallon. Back then it was about $0.65 per gallon. In 1977, the same 2003 $1.84 was $0.61 in 1977. But gasoline then was about $1.00 per gallon! IOW price of gas is only high if one takes an emotional position. Price of gasoline has simply returned to normal prices. If those prices are too high, then what are you driving? Gasoline is still quite cheap.
TW, I think most of the bitching is the result of the prices being so low the past couple years.;)

I see your logic, but if the rest of the country is paying $.30 to $.60 less per gallon than I am, I'm bitchin' about it. CA is gettin' screwed, period. How does $2.19/gal in 2003 fit in your comparison chart?

There is no doubt that a state the exports oil should not be paying such high prices. But then I do wonder since CA did not vote for George Jr and since CA is targeted to become a Republican stronghold, if that is not encouraged or intentional.
Look. CA got screwed intentionally by big energy traders such as Enron, Duke Energy, and other Houston based energy trading companies. Who is going to jail for this? No one is to even be prosecuted by this George Jr admininstration. Only peope like Martha Stewart who did not contribute. CA got screwed by illegal trading and no one is even prosecuted? Remember, this president is an MBA and is supported by right wing extremists. That means he cannot be trusted. One must question why all energy now costs so much more in CA. And why those caught holding prices higher for $billion personal gain (in some cases) do not even go to court!
No wonder FirstEnergy almost got their nuclear power plant not shut down - by just contributing $millions to the Replublican party. By peronsally running fund raisers for Cheney and George Jr. We reasonably suspect that those bribes were keeping a nuclear reactor operating that was potenially another Three Mile Island. CA has a legitamite complaint about their gas prices. And good reasons to suspect collusion.
In Portland Oregon - North of Cali - we are paying anywhere from $1.87 (cheapie gas station) to $2.01 per gallon for regular. I drive a little 10 gallon neon - great gas mileage. I almost had kittens when to fill my gas tank it cost $19.75. (Normally $10-11 and I'm full.)
For me, gas is cheaper now than it was 20 years ago. My real income has risen enormously even with inflation taking its toll. $0.89 a gallon in 1980 was a much more serious impact to me than $2.45 a gallon is now.
I can remember my Dad complaining about paying $0.35 a gallon back on a road trip in the late 60's. Thirty Five cents a gallon seems cheap, but back then a new Chevy was $1700-$2200 and a middle class income was $20K a year back then.
I paid $1.879 on the way home from work today (regular unleaded. Super was over $2). Slangsylvanian prices (for product from the same manufacturer) last week were running around $1.749.
(I don't "shop" for gas. I pull into the most convenient station under the logic that I will waste as much in gas as I will gain by paying a slightly lower price if I ride around some more)
I ventured into town yesterday and in one area:
low grade = $2.29
mid grade = $2.39
high grade = $ 2.49
Scary:eek:
Okay, now I'm paying $2.20 per gallon in
Ballard.
Regular unleaded two days ago at my last fill up at Sam's Club was $1.599/gal.
I don't know why it is so much cheaper here all of the sudden, compared to you coasties.

Geez, Sam's Club's here don't have gas. But some Costco's do. I filled up there yesterday w/ cheap-o unleaded for $2.04/gal:(
ever since the gov't started the probe into the rise of gasoline prices the cost has gone down by an average of 7 cents (observation, not fact:) ) well, that and the usual labor day price gouging.. (sp?)

I see you took my advice and started looking around the Cellar a bit. Way to go buddy:thumb:
PS...sp on gouging is correct:cool:
Prices continue to drop here in Grandview (Western Missouri suburb of KC, for those who don't know). I just filled up this morning at price of $1.4999 per gallon...
Well Els, if I send you my car, will you fill it up and send it back to me? (or how bout just a really BIG gas can?)
We're down to about 1.639 here. And slowly dropping.
Dagney
Is it a nice car? Hell, you could send it to me, and I could just keep it! :D
I cannot for the life of me understand how there is such a big disparity in pricing around the country, and why all of the sudden it drops, then goes up...
My theory is that the price of fuel is based upon the results of a high stakes card game somewhere in the bowels of DC. GM wins, the price of gas goes down. Exxon wins, the price goes up.
Had to laugh when I read the complaints about all my US cousins on Gas or as we say in the UK (PETROL)..Try buying gas here at a rough calculation gas is..$4.77 per gallon.
But for comparison, has it always been that high?
I understand that's a fairly consistant gas price in the UK...we're just getting used to these higher prices
(and not liking it!)
That bitch up the street is still running at $1.839. Time to have a little talk with that guy *baseball bat in hand*
Our gas stations around here are generally a bit high though...if you want really good prices, you have to head over to Rt. 1 in Trevose--Wawa always keeps the other competitors low. 3 months after 9/11, the big chains tried to up their price to $1.029. Wawa held firm at .959...the big chains dropped back to .959 after a few days.
In the end, I would imagine we pay the same amount for gas as our peeps in the UK pay for petrol over the course of a year. They tend to have smaller cars--more fuel-efficient. Assholes like Ep want their SUVs. ;)

No, no, no...I don't want an SUV. I *want* a fucking 500 HP Corvette. If I'm gonna get shitty gas mileage, I want to get it at 150 mph.
What I *really* want, though, is my camper, and it is big enough that it needs to be towed behind something, hence an SUV. I tried towing it behind a Lamborghini once, but do you know how bad a camper sways once you break 100!?
As I often say, I'm a bad Pagan. I don't have room to recycle, I drive a vehicle that is getting (after actually driving a full tank without towing anything) 19 mpg, and I haven't planted a tree on purpose since I was 14. But let's not forget that those same Brits who are now apparently driving rubber band powered carbon fiber and spider silk shelled vehicular contraptions are probably using gasoline only for flavoring their otherwise unremarkable cuisine. Meanwhile, with my SUV, I can pile about fifty pounds of ribs and a smoker into the back end, toss in six cases of beer and four lawn chairs, and go hang out in the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium in style, eat like a king, and watch Pittsburg get their asses whipped this Sunday.
Well...okay, I could do that if I had a job and could afford the scalped tickets, the $20 parking fee, and the price of spareribs and beer.
Finally, need I remind you all that there are few who have suffered as long or as strenuously as KC sports fans? Thank the gods that football season got going before the Royals tanked. Sigh.
Oh...and guys, I would worship Geraldo Rivera if it would get a Super Bowl championship to this town. One more advantage of being a Pagan...you can worship the most evil beings possible and still come out smelling like a rose!

Gas continues to drop here. I paid $1.36 yesterday.
Got gas in Jersey Saturday for $1.6something but I noticed they had diesel for $1.37 which surprised me because diesel has been way up too.
i think it will be interesting to see what happens to the prices come Thanksgiving week/weekend...
