6/25/2003: Mud person festival

Yesterday was June 24 and that means a bunch of Filipinos were celebrating the feast day of John the Baptist like good Catholics everywhere.

But in one Filipino village, there has come about a tradition of covering one's self with mud and branches and stuff. Over time this has been noticed by tourists and so it has come to be the "Taong Putik Festival" -- taong putik meaning "mud person".



Men, women and children all cover themselves in mud, dried banana leaves and vines, and then they go pray, and then they have a parade down the main street.

Hey Bruce, a few years back now, I went to Thailand and spent the day riding, cleaning, playing, kissing etc etc the baby elephants. I had mud from heat to toe, but it was the best time I have ever had. I even went out for a late lunch after that in the same clothes I was in (mud and all) I really didn't want to change. I would have slept out in the dark to be with them all. Spiders and all.

That's fun mud. Can I have my elephant now?

They look like an elite group of Unarmed Special Forces. :D Except that guy in the lower picture. He looks too out of shape. Maybe he's a General.
