...save your buffers

Since many people don't check the tagline, that is the official word.

An alternate forum for Dwellars is being considered. If anything becomes available it will be posted.
BigV • Oct 11, 2020 6:06 pm
This is profoundly unfortunate.
footfootfoot • Oct 11, 2020 8:05 pm
So it's for certain. What is a buffer?
BigV • Oct 11, 2020 8:43 pm
It's the space you thought you had just before you smash your knuckles.

what have we learned?????

I dont wanna lose this site because of 1 member!!!!

I DONT WANT AN ALTERNATIVE SITE ON CRAPPY NEWER SOFTWARE....... (Xenforo for example) -- I think this is very sad Flint has caused this to happen........

I hope Undertoad calms down before 31 December..... We are running out of good VBB sites!!

First off, Dude.... it's not because of ONE member.... and let's not forget who brought the spamming newbie in that set Flint's spamhammer spinning. Not really fair of you to try to lay the whole thing at his feet.

"The world is coming to an end - save your buffers" was a cookie for a long time. It's a joke from computer history, when if your computer crashed it meant the loss of the data in cache memory, ie. the buffers, which could be traumatic if it happened at the wrong time.

Operating system history: The idea of "orderly shutdown" was built into Linux, but not so much into Windows. the idea was that Windows could die at any moment and not become confused, because it was shitty and crashed all the time and so a crash had to not be as traumatic as it was. Linux needed buffers because it was performing things for everybody, not just for one user. So it didn't crash so much, and if you were turning it off, it would carefully write all the data in memory to disk before shutting down.

Since Windows wasn't caching things for everybody, it meant that Windows was slow at doing server-type stuff -- at the moment when the Internet was coming online, and suddenly server type stuff became wildly important. (Of course, in Windows you would lose documents and spreadsheets in a crash, because the ability to save was left up to the applications, and autosave was cutting-edge technology and they've only just recently figured out that it is a good idea.)

Cellar is performing an orderly shutdown.

DanaC • Oct 12, 2020 11:37 am
I'm genuinely rocked by this. It's like the foundations of my life are shifting.

Thank you Undertoad - I am beyond grateful for the community you helped start and then maintained for decades. I hope (if there is no change in decision) that you will join the new community (unencumbered by responsibility) so that we can stay in touch.

The Cellar is a strange place - it isnt just another message board, just another online community - it is a family: a thoroughly dysfunctional family with various aunts and uncles feuding and a fist fight at most family gatherings, but a family nonetheless.

I would like to think that the family is relocating rather than dying out.

Regardless though - it is the end of an era.

This site is older than your average tech billionaire

If you’d looked around before you joined you’d have noticed that there’s a lot of fucking this, and not-safe-for-work posts, and women being asked to get their tits out for the lads. It’s always been here, and if it’s not to your taste no-one forced you to join in.
So please don’t be surprised or offended about it, we didn’t hide it from you till you arrived. You chose to join us.

Well Limey I didn't investigate the threads before I joined...trusted the person who brought me in as a like minded soul that I would associate with. I'm not offended, and yes surprised but one keeps learning until DEAD...so it's been a lesson for sure.

And could be that the person who invited me here, had no idea I would be treated so poorly...maybe that's not happened in this forum for some time or never or who the H knows.

This Forum is basically generally good, and if a person joined yrs ago maybe that is the key....but a person who is positive and holistically minded does NOT have a chance and to be 82, good lord...how does an 82 keep up on forums....

You probably envision an 82 yr old in a recliner glued to Fox or whatever nonsense on the tube.
lumberjim • Oct 12, 2020 4:13 pm
how old do you think she is?
Flint • Oct 12, 2020 4:19 pm
we HATE positive minded people

hit the nail on the head
DanaC • Oct 12, 2020 4:42 pm
And freedom. We hate that too :P

My mum is in her late 70s and she would absolutely not be fazed by this place.

Age - is only a factor if you make it so.

- as for holistically minded: there's nothing wrong with that.

Forgive me for tromping in to a discussion that has already apparently run itself into the ground - but over the past couple of days i have seen a lot of allegations against the community because of your experience here, and that draws my attention.

- Your experience is your own - I cannot nor would I seek to tell you that you did not have a horrible experience when you came in here and posted your truth

But, your experience is not indicative of how any and every individual with your opinions would be treated in the Cellar.

Right now - there is a high to middling chance that a new person coming in and spreading what a large number of members consider to be dangerous misinformation will not be greeted with open arms and a willing spirit of discourse. Because right now, everybody has an immediate stake in the issue and tensions are simmering at every level of society.

We are and have always been a strong community at our core - though there are times when that falters for a spell. But we are not immune to the cultural powder keg a lot of people are currently living in.

Ordinarily, someone posting about fringe alternative medicines and the evils of Big Pharma would be met with a range of responses from gentle mockery, through savage commentary and genuine interest - and then the conversation would veer of into uncharted territory as everyone gets distracted by something shiny

We live in extraordinary and highly divided times.

It is very easy to push buttons in such an atmosphere.

Or maybe that person is clueless AF, buddy. You don't do the research, you pay the consequences.

You have treated this forum very poorly. Only an idiot would not expect it to defend itself.

And -FYI- it is immensely vulgar behavior to use initials of or substitutes for "bad" words. The damage lies in the intent and in using anything at all, not in the actual verbiage. If you wish to use a "swear" word, the most polite thing is just to do so. If there are juveniles present, it may be more appropriate to swear in a language they do not yet understand, e.g. French. I can recommend several etiquette books (most not written by doctors as far as I know), if you would like to research that for yourself. That said, nothing wrong with a good bit of vulgarity -one of the oldest forms of humor and we all know laughter is the best medicine. Have a Blessed Day.

The Cellar hasnt been much joy for UT for a while now - there have been odd fallings out, and the divisiveness of modern politics have made themselves felt - into this already not fun situ a new member arrived (jam) and as I understand it posted a lot of stuff about alternative health including some stuff about Covid that many considered to be part of the large covid misinformation drive that has been hitting much of the interwebz.

Responses to teh new member were not overly welcoming (some suspected a troll) and in response the new member doubled down on their assertions and this further fed the notion that they were a troll or spambot - therefore responses got quite vitriolic.

New member (perhaps understandably) is more interested in fighting their corner and reminding us all that they are in their 80s and taking the forum to task for the amount of swearing, lack of manners, lack of welcome for new members than in addressing the fact that their posting style was spammy and abrasive enough for people to think they might be a spambot (or sock puppet for the member who introduced them).

UT is a decent caring man and it did not sit well with him that a human person got dogpiled on the site by people who suspected trolling - and once it became clear they weren't a spambot nevertheless continued to meet the new member with hostility

This was basically the final straw for UT who had already commented a few times over past year or so that he might not want to continue with the cellar and has at times stepped away as a poster, though continued to host.

It's a mess - but it is probably not entirely unexpected - was probably going to happen at some point and this was just the thing that tipped it

We are currently looking at ways to rehouse the community on a new board for any who wish to keep it going.

what is freedom to you? what you describe sounds a lot like license...a child's notion of freedom (golly gee wilikers, I can't wait till I grow up! then I can do whatever I want to!)

freedom is self-direction & self-responsibility; it's about choice & consequence

it's deliberation (self de-liberation)
