Virtual Forks
I recall that the old timers here had a get together called Forks a LOOONG time ago ...
As we're all cooped up indoors now for the foreseeable with little to distinguish one day from the next, mebbe it'd be good to fix a time for a weekly virtual forks, bring your own booze optional? Just a half hour time window to "check in", though of course we may blether for longer ....
Are most of you Murricans in the Eastern time zone? Would 6pm on a Saturday work for you?? That's 11pm for us Brits (may be past Carruther's bed time, but then again, he's an insomniac). And unfortunately some sort of morning time for Aliantha ...
It could be a Skype conference call, or some smart techie could come up with a better suggestion.
Whaddayall think?
If I can make it work. I'm game.
Zoom lets you do free videoconferencing for 3-100 people for up to 40 minutes.
I think Skype video calls (over wifi) are free without time limit? But I hear a lot of people mention zoom .....

I've been using zoom for days!
It's pretty damn easy to use, although I've only joined meeting, haven't set one up.
The biggest issue some people have is figuring out how to click a box to turn on their camera, or click a box to turn on their microphone.
google hangouts can do this too.
We already have an established slack channel for those among us who would like text communication. It's been dormant for awhile, but I will check it this morning and see.
I think a video option would be good for this (optional, of course). Does Slack do that, I can’t remember?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Right folks. Can I suggest Zoom as a platform? I’ll look into how to set it up and find out what I’ll need from y’alls to invite you.
6pm Eastern time for the Murricans, 11pm for the Brits, tomorrow, Saturday ....
I’ll be back here when I’ve taken a look at Zoom ...
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Okay. To be at virtual forks tomorrow please either download the ZOOM app, or go to the webpage. Get yourselves an account (free). Message me with the email address used for your account and I’ll “schedule” the meeting.
Cheers

I love the idea of a video option.
I did confirm that the slack workspace is working. The URL is thecellar.slack.com. If you have already joined and have a username, you can enter your credentials here. If you don't have credentials, send me a PM and I'll send you an invitation.
Slack's a great, free tool. I used it back in the day when I had a paying gig, and many here use it too.

Does Slack offer a video option? Zoom is also free and seems really easy to use for our purpose.
I'm not at all sure what time we close tomorrow. If I can get home in time, I'll join. Rain date some time Sunday?
HA! I'd like to try to do this.
Glad I checked in today.
I have to wash a fork.
Do we need to have a fork to get in? I have a special red one. Maybe I can do the new house tour. Finally
You have to give a fork to get in. ;)
6pm Eastern time for the Murricans, 11pm for the Brits, tomorrow, Saturday ....
6pm Eastern will be 10pm here until we change to BST next weekend.
Righty ho, thanks Carruthers! 6pm Eastern time, 10pm for the Brits until we change the clocks later this month.
I’m just about to set this up. If you want in, please message me your email address and download the Zoom app (or get Zoom up on your PC).
Forks optional. BYOB.

true dat :ggw:
I got stuck at work. But that won't happen next week. Or the next or next or next probably. We're all on furlough. Closed. Unemployed.
I'm actually kind of excited to have that much time off. Amanda can still work, so now she's my sugar mama.
Better speed up the wedding plans so she can't get away. ;)

Sorry I missed you guys! Turns out 6PM on a Saturday isn’t the best time for me to shun immediate family and get on the laptop.
Too much going on with meal prep, eating, etc.
I'm open to suggestion about a better time. Earlier, preferably, to account for time zone differences with Europe. As many of us are either working from home of off work altogether the schedule is wide open, I guess.
I'm sorry I missed the last episode of Virtual Forks.
I have since successfully figured out how to use Zoom, it's pretty slick, phone and computer. Now I have a new idea (not my idea, I stole it from a
NYT article, now I'm sharing it here).

Zoom Happy Hour
We can have
Quarantinis and Placeboritas!
Isolation -- check
Internet access -- check
Zoom app -- check
Booze -- check
Thirst -- check
Now all we have to do is open the bar!
About opening the bar....
I've learned that it's prudent to keep the meeting url/code non public so we're not zoom-bombed (that's what the booze is for, eh?). I'm happy to host the meeting, there doesn't need to be only one meeting. In my experimentation I was able to be in two zoom meetings at the same time, one on my computer and one on my phone. It does require a certain agility, but doable.
As for the scheduling, I remember when the the cellar chat was active. People would drop in whenever, chat with whomever was present. The "announcing" such as it was consisted of a post in a thread (such as this one) and can easily be adapted for our purposes here to have that post followed up by a PM with the meeting code. Anyone can host, just say so, people will respond as they will.
This also brings to mind something brought up by Limey when we were comparing Zoom and Slack. One difference I have thought of since is that Slack is perfectly content to remain open but idle on my computer, signaling me only when there's a new message, but Zoom feels more like the main event, something that really requires continuous presence. They're complimentary, not completely competitive.
I agree about keeping the meeting ID and password between ourselves, i.e. sent out in PMs.
Not quite sure why we would want two concurrent Cellar meetings? I had it in my head that the next one is sort of scheduled for tomorrow at 6pm Eastern time, 10pm GMT ....
BigV do you want to host?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I think Zoom worked fine the way we did last Saturday, I'm not sure why we would change anything except the time if there's a better time for more people. I had my forks ready too... cute little pickle forks I picked up in a junk shop :) I just forgot at the time. 6 Eastern works fine for me -that's 22:00 zulu time, I think.... :/ but I'm pretty flexible..... evenings are best though
Heya!
two concurrent zoom meetings was just an experiment, I was only playing with the application and my equipment and found it was possible.
for "virtual forks" sure, setup a predefined meeting time so people can plan accordingly; not a single thing wrong with that.
for "zoom happy hour", well, it's five o'clock *somewhere* all the damn time. So I suggest anyone who wants to have a drink (drinks optional) just show up and announce that they're hosting a Zoom Happy Hour (hour optional). That person can host, or if there's a happy hour underway, join the current one in progress. Or ask for someone else to host so they don't have a sink full of dirty dishes afterward.
I'm just thinking out loud. I did recently (since the previous post in this thread) adjust my workspace--it's a work in progress. I might join via phone so I can move around... Semper Gumby.
Do I want to host, sure. Let's have a drink!
PM me for the meeting URL and password.
Great, BigV! You're hosting tomorrow? Will pm you right now!

Well...
I have the whole damn bar to myself.
Well, I finished my drink and closed the bar.
I only turned the light off, so if any of you are still thirsty, we can set it up again. Just make some noise here and we'll get to it.
fargon just turned the light back on.
Come and have a damn drink!
bar's closed again.
I'll setup a new thread.
Me and Amanda got on zoom last Saturday with my sister's family and played Yahtzee for like 2 hours. Didn't see any 40 minute minute limit. Maybe just because it was only a 2 party thing?
I'll be on tomorrow at 6. You should too. I'm planning set something on fire.
Yeah, the free version is unlimited minutes for 2 people, or 40 minutes for groups of 3-100.
I'll email or DM tonights virtual forks link and Secret Password later today.
Bring a fork: 6pm Eastern 10pm GMT ...
Have messaged the meeting number and password out to those that have expressed an interest .....

A little earlier is fine with me.
6pm eastern doesn’t work at all for me.
4pm eastern is much more doable.
Today I was playing Euchre with the wife and kids, with a spread of cheese and crackers, cut up apples and a bowl of peanuts, and having a glass of wine.
At 4pm, I was doing nothing and was free.
I know that’s like lunch time for the west coast.
It's lunch time on the west coast anyway.....

Pretty asymmetrical, and kind of left handed, but it's more of a decorative piece.
Let's see the other side, fork it over.

Do you like to wash up first? You know, top and tails... whores bath? Personally before I'm on the job, I like to give my undercarriage a bit of a how's your father!
God I hope that's a quote from something.

Commonly used British phrase meaning to have sex. I've no idea why it should mean this.

The whole phrase is a quote from Austin Powers.
How's-yer-father
can be used as a thingumajig doohicky kind of a euphemism, and one of the things about AP was he used outdated slang which had come to take on more dubious meaning...
I found one source saying originally it was rhyming slang for lather which would work in this context, but I'm not sure about that
Okey dokey. 4pm Eastern time this Sunday it is then. Will send invites to the usual suspects and anyone else who hits me up for one ([emoji12]) before then.
In the meantime there is the Cellar Slack channel for those “at the water cooler” moments you’re missing in your life ...

Saw this in the news today. Just an FYI:
Zoom under scrutiny in US over privacy, porn hacks
Video conferencing app Zoom, which has seen its popularity skyrocket in the coronavirus pandemic, is in hot water after users complained to the FBI of being startled by porn during meetings. …
New York Attorney General Letitia James sent a letter to the in-vogue California enterprise "with a number of questions to ensure the company is taking appropriate steps to ensure users' privacy and security," a spokesman said. …
… The investigation comes after the FBI's Boston office warned on Monday that it had "received multiple reports of conferences being disrupted by pornographic and/or hate images and threatening language." …
… The FBI recommended that Zoom users make all meetings private and avoid screen sharing to combat would-be hackers. …

Oh that was just Clodfobble....

Yeah, she's a perv.
I considered buying a few shares of their stock, ss it seems they will grow in coming months, but then I decided to buy Marijuana. Stocks. I bought stock in a company that sells weed.
Definititely a boom coming in that business. Might take a year, but once it's legal in most states, and people don't have to go through dealers, I see good times ahead.
Start building you greenhouse now.
Pretty sure the Pence administration's gonna end the legal weed.
People in the legal states will not put up with that.
It's only legal by state law, or should I say not illegal by state law.
However it is still a federal offence and the feds can come down on you at any time they choose.
Or they can be persuasive by cutting off federal funds to the state.
The people of the state won't stand for it. How?
When they find out the state has become a prison camp and the Soylent Green machines are circling, what will they do?
What will they do? Remember the US Military is no longer the kid from down the block doing his two year hitch, it's professionals with the capability of taking out you, your block, or your city, at the push of a button.
I might have just posted an ickle rant on facebook about judging for other people what is an "essential" item during lockdown. I'm pretty amused by a person responding immediately admitting they are stricter about such things ...a person whom I know considers weed an essential. Because I don't and I'm pretty sure the Feds don't currently....
(stores here were doing curbside pick-up ....but I don't know if they got shut down completely in the recent crackdown by That Woman In Michigan)
found out recently that gun and ammo stores have been reclassifed as essential, permitting them to remain open
I’m pleased that they seem to be using up all their ammo in my neighborhood. Of course you can get it by UPS in PA...
Handload shotgun shells with some chloroquine tablets, go out and cure some people.
They just gonna shoot the fuck outta that coronavirus...... ain't nothin' that can't be stopped with enough bullets -they even slowed The Terminator.....

just saw ANOTHER article about how Zoom gives with the big print and with the little print taketh away...
Zoom shares LinkenIn details of some meeting participants with meeting host.
I think you'll see more coverage because so many corporate groups as well as law enforcement and others who are discussing sensitive information are concerned with end to end encryption to protect them.
I doubt this group is of interest to the ne'er-do-wells except for Clodfobble's tits.

Was he saying Hi from a rave? or other illicit gathering? We expressed admiration for your latest publication adventure in your absence, especially those of us who know who Sid Meier is.... ;)
Fortunately he said hi from his house; unfortunately he mentioned that he's still going to the post office every day "just to check," but he believes his immune system is made of steel because of the extensive amounts of air travel he's done in his career. >:(

This sounds very familiar. :(
My son has long hair. It’s driving him crazy right now as the temperature warms up. I was in need of a haircut just before this lockdown, and missed the chance. It’s too late now to see a barber until June 10th. That’s too far away.
So my son and I have been studying YouTube videos on how to cut hair. We discuss the techniques we see being used. We’re really taking it seriously. I have been on Amazon, looking at their hair clippers and scissors. They won’t ship either until May or June. So I ordered some scissors from a third party seller.
My son thinks he wants a buzz cut. He had a buzz cut in 2006 when he was 4, so I dug our the external drive and found the pictures of that haircut to show him. So the whole family was looking at these awesome pictures, and wanted to see more. We spent a long time going through pictures of 2006, and it was a great nostalgic journey.
And then we got to a picture of me in front of a computer monitor, and lumberjim was on the computer screen. Behind him was another computer monitor with somebody else in front of their monitor.
I said “oh yeah, I‘ve got a Zoom call with my Cellar friends at 4:00” and I looked up at the clock which said 4:40. Oops.
And then I realized that if I wanted to join the tail end of the call, I would have to kick my family off the laptop and stop the little trip down memory lane. I couldn’t do that.
I’m sorry I missed the call.
I’ll make it up by posting a video of me getting a hair cut and me giving my first haircut. Once the scissors arrive.
That's ok. Just find that thread and bump it. I think I had Pi on my screen?
Family nostalgia trip sounds grand! I look forward to seeing the hair cut. You could time it for 4pm on a Sunday and we could all watch :eyeball::eyeball:

Whether we use the available toys or not the decline of our civilization continues. If we use the toys to check in with our fellow humans its worth the moral risk.
Corporations and organizations have glomed in on zoon because it was there when they needed something right now. As anything that attracts that much attention there will always be people trying to make a buck off it. While the money boys tussle a small group can slip through completely unnoticed. The tussle will happen regardless of what you do so go, baby, go!

But it doesn't go away
Vaccine trials in Seattle
Drug trials at VA
There's some hope from Chicago, but
I mean it's here to stay
It's racking up the body count
In nursing homes and ICUs
You ask any WHO man
He'll say there's not enough we can do
From the office of the President
Right down to me and you
Me and you
It's a losing proposition
But one you can't refuse
It's the politics of pandemics
It's the Gov'nor's blues
Gov'nor's blues
So is there going to be another meeting of the minds any time soon? I'd be keen to chat if the time zones work.
It's set for every Sunday at 4pm my time -which is Eastern Time and we're on daylight Saving time .... so that's 8pm GMT, 9pm British Summer Time and erm...... Really early in the morning for you? 6-7am ish Monday? I don't know exactly which time zone you're in there
Ok 6am on Mondays your time, I think
It’s happening again. Same deets as before. Message me if you don’t know them already. Cheers.

Not gonna miss it this week.
Dammit!
Kicking myself for not watching the clock. Sigh...
we only just finished!
you should've come in, sorry I never thought to check the thread....
Oh cool--I thought they were limited to 40 minutes. Next time I'll know I can drop in even if late.
sorry, I should have checked :(
Darling Limey got a subscription so we could go forever if I didn't bore everyone to tears
Limey, this is what you guys were reminding me of...

I did screenshot intending to post a comparison, but like a tit, I copied something else to the clipboard in the interim.
My battery died.

Dudes you missed Part 1 of the Limey backstory. Pete was listening in and described it as "wonderful". She is gender equality.
Bummer, now Clodfobble won't be able to write the story so fargon can have keryx read it to him at bedtime...
...and today is National Tell a Story Day (April 27th)…
… Oh, the humanity!
The weather Sunday was really crap. Cold, windy, and rained non stop all day. So no sitting out on the deck during the call.... We were watching a movie and being lazy,. Took a nap...
I would have had to go out to the garage or another room, and just couldn't be arsed. Get the cliff notes ready and I'll be there for episode 2.
Tony, if you don't show up for one of these, you're de-cool.
All ya'll non joiners need to drop in Ali is the only one that gets a pass( its like 06 on monday mornfor her )every body else NO EXCUSE !!!
yebbut what else does she have to do? Down there in Aus, they have that suriv anoroc that's making them all stay home and be derob just like the rest of us

Well, lucky for you, you're just in time for happy hour.

I may miss this week. Picking Spencer up in the afternoon, not sure what time. I'll try to check in at least.
I didn't clean up my shop, but if you want to talk about / show and tell tools limey, we can do a call any time today.
I've got loads of works to do. Thanks for the offer, maybe another time?

Good morning!
I look forkward to our meeting.
I'm planning to be there, but my boys are allegedly cooperating on being nice to me on Mothers' Day so I'm not entirely sure how my day will pan out (both still in bed). We did want to do garden work and grill, but snow is forecast... going out to mow right now :D
Lawnmowing is at the top of my list today too, but I'm starting early to avoid the 80 degree heat, not frostbite.
I did screenshot but like a tit, I copied something else to the clipboard in the interim.
Well bollocks, I did this again. Limey's Titfer was exquisite.......
I coined a new phrase for things that appear during a video conference that everyone ignores out of politeness... The Elephant in the Zoom. I'm so funneh

...just being prepared....
We're still forkin it, come on in!
Sorry I had to dash out -a few things to deal with and a mask to sew before dark (still working on that, rest done. I think....)
Cool Freaks Wikipedia Club on BasefuckI'm just not very sociable at the moment. Text chat is about my speed just now :P
I fell asleep and had a good nap.
I finished the mask (It's for Bajaboi who starts a summer internship tomorrow -remotely for 2 more weeks, but has to go in to sign the docs and pick up his computer)

Nice work! Do you have a link to the pattern you used?
erm...
I used the pattern from a site called craftpassion (because the shape looked good) but ignored any instructions they might have given. I adapted it to add a pocket for a removable nose wire (pipe cleaner) at the top so it can be shaped to the face. (I extended the material at the top of the outside piece so it could be folded over).
I did a prototype before this one to work out how to make the pockets for the elastic and wire. I used a loop of round cord elastic going through both pockets to form two straps round the back or over the top of the head as desired, like decent swim goggles, rather than one small loop through each pocket to go round the ears.
Didn't change from the prototype for this one, but next one I will add more height, because beest gifted bajaboi a majestic snoz that could do with a little more coverage and this top is straining a little as it is.
so "not really" is the short answer ;)
That's a really fine looking mask.
I've got several n95 masks kicking around. But am saving them for trips inside stores, and if they make us go back to work, I'm going to want an n95 for when I ride the subway.
But for walking around the neighborhood, which we do a lot, I like the idea of cloth masks. My wife made some masks out of t-shirt material. Two layers, and I found that I can slip a number 4 coffee filter between the layers. We got a new coffee maker last year and have something like 200 of the old number 4 filters from the old coffee maker left over. And I got a stiff wire from my shop to slide in along the top of the mask so I get a really tight fit at my nose.
It's not made nearly as well as your mask, Monster, and takes 30 seconds of so to get the layers lined up correctly and the coffee filter situated in place properly. But it feels like it fits well. When I breath in, the whole filter collapses against my face as I suck air in, so I know very little is leaking in through the sides. and my sunglasses don't fog up at all, so very little is leaking out the edges and around my nose when I breath out.
I found a good website
[maybe this one?] that lists the effectiveness of various household materials at filtering. It was interesting.
With some artistically arranged googly eyes on it... you'd have a fine Coat of Arms!
Today folks. But I’ll be taking time out. I’ll leave the key under the mat and you can let yourselves in.

It's winter here. It's dark at 6am. I'm normally sleeping. :) If it were summer, I'd be up though. I'm going to try and make it some day though. Limey sent me the details. :)
Sorry dudes, I had chores and work prep going and lost track of time.
I was cooking, and entertaining Mom. I'll be there next time.

Same here, sorry.
I was having a bit of a kip. And then Spencer sanded through the power cord for the sander so I got involved in fixing that.
Did anyone show?

I did that with a router once. Set it down on its side after doing a cut and the bit was still spinning when it brushed against the cord. Annoying.
I love the idea of the virtual forks, but it just hasn't happened yet for me. There always seems to be something going on.

Likewise!
However, I managed to cut through the cable of my electric hedge trimmer not once, but twice, in successive years.
RCD gizmo prevented 240v up the Carruthers arm. Twice.
After that I invested in a Kawasaki two stroke trimmer. Probably one of the best buys I've ever made.
Today. Hit me up for the deets if’n you need them.

I was out and about. Bought a lathe and some materials to make a down draft table for sanding. It's harder for me to get in there now because I'm working again, and it's 6 days for now. Only day off is Sunday. We close at 5, so I'm working about the same hours, but not having a week day off to run errands is getting old already.
I guess I'm late...
Sorry... it was a beautiful day I wanted to make the most of the cooler evening light to garden. Very happy with what I did :D Veg garden finished planting and weeded... :D :D :D

He'd be the real Cellar Solstice Celebrator and still pops in occasionally.
Of course Elspode might want free music and live snacks.

Hey limey, I found
this link to some images and info about something you pointed out during our solstice tour of the summit. You pointed out a pretty flower with purple blossoms. I wonder if it was Cerinthe Major Purpurascens. It lovely and I hope to add some to our garden here
Thank you again for the wonderful tour!
Maybe later, but I was just about to move to get constructive things done and I don't really want to break my stride as i only just mentally got my act together for the day
.... :/
Heya dwellars, footfootfoot asked about another session. I'm game. If you're interested for this Sunday, tomorrow, 20 Sept, chime in. I would be willing to host the party.

Yep - next sunday 10pm UCT, whatever that is in your time zone.
I'll actually be there this time.
I think I'll be at tm he boss's party, but if I get bored, maybe you'll get a peek at his basemen man cave.
Sorry for short notice. How about a virtual forks tomorrow? 10pm UTC, whatevs that is where you are?

I tried getting in at about 4:15 from the boss's man cave, but then got pulled back to the party.
I am going to try to set something up for the wedding ceremony. That's only 11 days away!
Oh sweet FSM that would be SO COOOOOOOOOL. [emoji41]

Holy shit 11 days?
Doesn't seem 5 minutes since you got engaged
will we have to wear hats?
I'm thinking of just setting my tablet up in a spot where you can see the ceremony, but lowering my sound.
That way you all could talk to each other but not be heard by the folks in meat space.
I'd flip the view, so people would think it's recording a video and not obstruct the view.
My dad has a full account, but someone has to let people join.... I might be begging a favor of the sasanach....

I was there but was *also* on a Zoom call to P*psi, my shift doesn't end for another hour... so I saw y'all but didn't listen and was just barely able to switch to listening for the ceremony part.
...and now I'm on a different Zoom call to P*psi... this is my life now, listening to people in India reconfigure routers in Omaha to see if it fixes what is broken...
have they tried turning it off and on again?
It was lovely sharing the peanut gallery with all the relatives. I loved the "feeding time at the zoo" moments when people came over to look at us :D

I'm unemployed and that was my second long zoom of the day too. The other one was training how to use zoom to help tutor adult literacy learners -most of whom need tech tutelage before they can get to the literacy bit.
Don't ya feel we'll all be holding some sort of zoom-burning party once covid is dealt with?

Learned this week that Zoom's market capitalization is approximately equal to that of Exxon-Mobil, so.... I don't think herd mentality will be the death knell of Zoom.
I was having break from computer use during all of this - tho as I am not so good at staying awake past midnight these days I'd probably not have made it anyway :P
Looks like a good time was had by all :)
