My car is totaled

The van that thunderboy uses to get to college. After his most recent accident. I had delayed repairs from the last one so they could happen when he had Spring break. So the front end was unprotected when he rear-ended someone. There is bollock-all public transport in Detroit area thanks to car industry suppressing... Would rather trap my tits in a mangle than car shop.... I must have been really fucking evil in a former life

Do you have somebody who can do it for you and just go along as a friend of the sham buyer?
Gravdigr • Feb 15, 2020 3:29 am
Well, shit.

Look in the back rows at the cheaper used car lots. Pay a mechanic you trust to look at it before you buy.

Sorry, that's all I got. Except, don't buy a used car you're not prepared to throw another $1000 at after you buy it. One of mine own rules.

LJ would probably have some useful tips.

Your Son is a big boy now make him find his own way to school and work.

Ok home now (dealing with this shit was not very helpful in my "getting the fuck away from it all...... notably widowhood, job loss and ASSHOLE SON.... [return date dictated by taking the little shit to court tomorrow for an informal hearing about a 3-point speeding ticket acquired the first day after the last crash.....])... breathe... breathe....

I need to buy a car that is built like a tank filled with bubble wrap (thank goodness this one was or he'd be so dead), cannot go very fast (Dodge Grand Caravans are nippier than they look) and is cheap as chips to insure. His unbelievable number of points wracked up over the 6 months he's been driving to college means he will have to drop out of college if I can't help him rein it in some way. Also I won't be able to afford him on my insurance. What with no job and all....

How far away is college?
Gravdigr • Feb 18, 2020 9:14 am
One solution: A less than 50cc scooter. In KY, no license, tags, or insurance required. Yet.

YMMV
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 18, 2020 10:04 am
In MI under 50cc has to be registered and valid drivers licence. But the electrics rules are looser.
lumberjim • Feb 18, 2020 10:50 am
And Michigan
BigV • Feb 18, 2020 11:04 am
No bubble wrap option
monster • Feb 18, 2020 8:10 pm

Can he ride the bus?
monster • Feb 18, 2020 8:59 pm
no. There isn't one. As I said in the OP, public transport is shit here because it was deliberately suppressed by the car industry (this is Detroit, Motown, Motor City) Otherwise you can bet both bollocks he's be doing that

Could this eventually be of help as a contingency plan? It's supposed to accommodate bicycles for in and around at each end.

Bus route connecting Ann Arbor and Detroit set to launch this year

Transportation networks propose Ann Arbor-Detroit express route

I've been watching that potential program for years. It's long overdue and always seems to fail before fruition. Fingers crossed though. I'm frankly surprised U of M doesn't have a link bus between the two campuses. Students at Dearborn are entitled to use all the facilities in Ann Arbor (and vice versa) (and Flint, although that's a little further aeway) ((let's see how long it takes for that genuine use of the name to pop up in his vanity searches :D))
