5/28/2003: Ancient stone face

On one hand, it's been a bad year for ancient stone faces in New England. On the other hand...

There are a bunch of these that were found in central Massachusetts, and they were pretty much ignored by everyone involved. People who found them thought they were interesting, but not that interesting; they kept them around but didn't investigate further.

Geologist Joseph Sinnott wasn't really all that interested at first either, when he saw the first one about ten years ago. But when he saw a second one, he thought it might be more than just a coincidence.

Now he has six of them, all heavy granite rock and all originally found within a few miles of each other.

Without more information, this is an archaeological mystery that won't ever find an answer. There are similar finds in New England, such as America's Stonehenge, which they figure was prehistoric - an astronomically-correct layout of stones with an oracle room and sacrificial table. Native religion? Pre-Columbus visitors from Europe? Aliens mapping their way through outer space? No-one will ever know.

I warned them over and over again. "If you keep smoking that stuff, you'll end up permastoned", but would the listen? Nooooooooo.;)

The odd thing is, these were found near heiroglyphic-type writings which translate, roughly, into "Have a nice day."
