My Mossberg 12-gauge is loaded and ready to go, just inside the front door (which is always locked). And with buckshot, precision isn't even that important.

Frankly, slamming a load into the breach is pretty much all it takes. Just ask my neighbor's kids. :D

What is that log fire auto-loader, some sort of charcoal-making scheme?

That's to pre-heat and dry the wood before it's fed continuously, to keep the fire going while you indulge in your chosen debauchery.

I have that as well. It does remind me of the kid in Into the Wild who managed to kill a moose with a small caliber rifle but couldn't cure the meat.

We have mostly water on the Mexican side, it's the Canucks that are a 1500 mile problem. Oh, plus you can see Russia from Sarah Palin's house. :unsure:

What stops the smaller prop logs from burning through at the bottom and the whole thing collapsing?

The dirt is packed close , to discourage fire from coming under the big logs.

also distance from the burning part.

There exists wrought iron fire log holder....thingees like that but more urban.
