H&R for all...
Gravdigr • Aug 28, 2019 4:45 pm
Good guns.

ETA: I had a twelve gauge H&R single shot about a hundred years ago. I bought it for a turkey gun. I shot three-inch XX Magnums through it. Hardest-kicking gun I've ever shot. It weighed nothing and kicked like a mule, worse, actually.
Diaphone Jim • Aug 28, 2019 6:21 pm
The kick is an inverse function of a gun's weight.
The stock-less 12 GA above would try to take your hand off at the wrist.
Gravdigr • Aug 29, 2019 5:38 pm
Nah. I've shot plenty of sawed-offs. You'll feel it, sure, but all that's required is a firm grip. Just keep in mind the "kick" turns your wrist a hinge.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 5, 2019 11:56 pm
One of my school apartment mates had a sawed off Parker Brothers with the stock cut into a pistol grip. Had to keep your head out of the way.

Pretty duded up Colt pistol...

No, they aren't giving anything away. They only briefly describe two guns, a three barrel .410 and a four barrel, two 97.3 x 74R and two 12 gage.

Possibly the smallest three-barreled gun ever built, in .410/.410/.410, with H&H-type sidelocks, one single trigger firing all three barrels in the sequence: right-left-bottom. Weight 2,4kg (5.2lbs).
It was a great challenge to fit a mechanism of such complexity into such a tiny action.
The trigger plate is only 12mm (0.47-inch) wide. On this triggerplate the single-trigger mechanism for all three barrels, as well as the lock for the third bottom barrel, must fit—and function correctly. Apart from crafting every single part from the full material, the design of this gun also involved a thorough reengineering of each component, and the relocating of the springs inside the action.
From a Set of Two shotguns dedicated to two birds (mallard and quail), we proudly present “The Quail Gun”—in .410/.410/.410

We designed and built this extraordinary four-barrelled firearm to a client´s specific request. A side-by-side double rifle (cal. 9,3/9,3x74R) was paired with an over-and-under shotgun (gauge 12/12/76) to become one firearm.
The customer required that the Vierling shoot four (plus two) times in sequence, with “hot” barrels; a robust, reliable mechanism that would enable intuitive quick handling.
As a gunmaking complication our four-barreled Vierling is unsurpassed: H&H-type sidelocks, with automatic ejectors, yet responsive and well balanced. It took an enormous effort to design and build, to join and regulate the rifle barrels two-times-two so they would shoot together to the same point of impact, in sequence—first the 9,3 barrels, then by pushing the barrel selector forward, the shooter continues with the 12-gauge barrels. Automatic ejectors for the shotgun barrels facilitate quick reloading for another two shots.

"As a gunmaking complication our four-barreled Vierling is unsurpassed:..."
I don't think I have seen that use of "complication" before.
Does it have a specific gun making meaning?
Happy Monkey • Feb 14, 2020 2:09 pm
It's a clockwork term; all of the extra functions a mechanical watch has are complications.

Another fancy gun from when craftsmen could be leaned on by the ruling class to work their ass off for a pittance.

Our military's early sidearms...
Diaphone Jim • May 10, 2020 11:59 am
From Wikipedia:
"This revolver was thought of as a decent handgun for its time, but complaints arose from the military concerning the revolver's cartridge chambering. Beginning in 1899, combat reports arose from the Philippines campaign regarding the poor performance of the M1892's .38-caliber ammunition. Specifically, users complained that the .38 bullet repeatedly failed to stop charging Filipino rebels at close ranges, even when hit multiple times."

Don't you hate it when that happens?

Maybe it's fear of Ibby that has my paranoid neighbor shooting every night! I saw today that gun sales to blacks are through the roof. I'm not at all surprised and don't blame them, but these days are way too interesting for me.

I'm actually in the process of getting my permits to buy hand guns. For the same reasons. Jersey makes it difficult. It will only get more difficult.

Names carry a lot of weight.
How many owners of "assault" rifles plan to assault anything?
Or hunt with them, for that matter.
If they are for defense, then should their standard mode be magazines full and handy?

They're useless otherwise.

Just a club otherwise.

First we have a pair of pistols. I wonder if they could get extra breech loader cartridges? shells? whatever they're called, and keep them loaded and ready.

The Golden Rifle is it's name, and for an extensively carved and engraved 18th century rifle it's in amazing condition.

The main reason it's in good shape is it was just completed this year.

Judson Brennen has been working on it for 6 years while the buyer twiddled his thumbs.

I wonder what the price tag was?

It's pretty, and shoots straight, what more could you want?

Great stories about beautiful guns. There a little disconnect between such creativity applied to a tool with such a purpose.
Griff's link is to a webpage that has the potential for many lost hours: GigaPan.
Their front page has an example of New York City. Can you find the nude beauty on the roof top?

As an adjunct to my post in Wildlife, living next to nature (#1756, I made a unexpected and unwelcome discovery.
A while ago, I decided that it made sense to have as my nightstand weapon something a smaller and less destructive to windows, favorite geegaws and TV's (not to mention friendlies) than a .357, 12 gauge or Mini-14.
My choice was a Hi-Standard Double Nine, a well made .22 caliber, double action, nine shot revolver, already owned, and loaded with long rifle ammunition.
I decided to use the loud report from said revolver to frighten away Br'er Bear in my briar (blackberry) patch.
Said revolver proceeded to mis-fire on four out of eight shots.
This was Federal Cartridge Corporation "Spitfire" ammo, stored under the best conditions I have, dry, cool and not mishandled.
Internet inquiry and my own experimentation with the mis-fires and other rounds in the container points to faulty primer material.
I guess the rest of those are for the shitcan and I can just hope the Winchester ammo now awaiting unwelcome intruders is better.
Griff • Oct 2, 2020 1:59 pm
That's disconcerting.
Ibby • Oct 2, 2020 2:03 pm
yikes. one misfire is a concern. four out of eight? thats real bad.
