Accidental Earth Day

Looks like I'm celebrating Earth Day this year. I'm part way through my 50 tree planting project. My hands feel like sandpaper. Desk jobs are bad.

Good on you Sir! I've done tree planting on nature reserves and a community orchard just up the road from me. There's also this organisation in the UK:

https://treesforlife.org.uk/

Need to get my shit together and do some volunteering for them.

This is actually good.

Will they be sustain-ably harvested?

Anything like that keeps our heads in the right space.

It feels like we've really lost ground around here. Pete was cleaning the side of the road yesterday. The mile my Dad walks daily was in good shape but the next 1/2 mile was terrible and someone dumped a dozen tires on the Gamelands. It seems like folks are making an effort to litter but I know it is just a few a-holes that are not being called on their shit like the full cans of beer being tossed on the ice in Philly yesterday. Maybe it's time for people to be informed about how shitty they are.

I've seen a "fuck it" type of attitude on the rise all over the place. Littering, sloppy driving, running red lights, cutting other drivers off, etc. We always had those things, but I think, in all seriousness, that with our current leader showing a disregard for the rules, everyone wonders what the point is of being civil and civic minded. That bad behavior is on the rise.

My buddy up the road was coming north from his house in southern DE, and traffic is medium. He's running about 80 and sees a car way back weaving in and out of traffic, had to be doing over 100. He looks over as she goes by and she's texting.

Really?

People are rude in cars because Trump?

Maybe just in DC. Things seem a lot worse here in the last year or so in people's attitudes. Maybe some of it is Uber's fault too. A lot more cars on the road and people doing crazy shit to try to not fall behind. Stuff that was rare a few years ago is common place now.

Saw a fistfight at noon a couple weeks ago.

There is always the possibility that I am projecting my own feelings, but I think I am seeing a pattern.

I went to see Super Troopers 2 yesterday, and they showed a preview for The Purge. It's a prequel that gives the story of how the practice came to be. If you haven't seen these movies, the premise is that for 12 hours, once a year, there are NO LAWS. even murder is OK.

I thought... jeez. it's probably not a good idea for these movies to be made.... And then... wait... who am I to say? maybe this is the beginning of old man thoughts. Censor those lyrics, Kids today.... Is that even Music?

There's a vicious cycle with Republican elected officials and Trump. They brought the standards down that (mostly inadvertently) let him in, and he's pulling standards down left and right because of who he is, and they're pulling standards down to accommodate him because they're pot committed, which he takes advantage of, and so on, and so on.

I don't know how much that translates to a lack of standards in the real world, but I have a similar feeling (and possibility of projection) to glatt.

It's classic "Broken Windows" stuff. If you see the guy next to you screaming in rage about his political beliefs and rudely offending his enemies, you're more likely to as well. It's not the content of Trump's message that affects us as much as it is the nature of its expression.
lumberjim • Apr 24, 2018 2:40 am
The trees don't care what Trump says.
lumberjim • Apr 24, 2018 2:44 am
If you started to formulate an argument to that statement about Trump's environmental policies, you're definititely projecting.

I'm thinking about this.

The only president to have any effect on how I lived was the one who reinstated selective service. And I had to fill out a whole postcard...OK, I had to check three boxes.

But I had to walk all the way back to the mailbox to send it back...

We stumbled into this during our post ride bull session. My buddies wife and both kids have had their vehicles damaged anonymously in parking lots recently. Not one note. He also asked if my local rednecks were worse than his because he rolled by our place recently and was amazed at the damn trash along the road.
