Key West, FL

Seriously thinking about booking a trip to Key West in October. I found a great resort that is away from the "downtown" area with bikes available for travelling. There's one area that has a bunch of things to sight see that I could wack out in one day. The rest of the time, sit on the sandy white beach right outside of my hotel room and relax.

Anybody been?

Never went there in October but the last third of the month is Fantasy Fest in Key West. Kind of like Mardi-Gras with parades and stuff.

Say hello to the GIs for us ...

ETA: I've been there; but, not as a student. I prefer being at the top of the food chain.

I'm going in late June/early July. Not the best time to be going, but there you go.

It's a Boy Scout thing. We drive down the Keys almost to the bottom and then get into canoes and paddle 5 miles to Big Munson Island. We camp there for several days in a primitive location and do a lot of kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing.

....I think you may have just convinced me to go....

You should have fun, don't forget your camera. :D
bbro • Apr 6, 2017 7:53 pm
Ok. So booking during Fantasy Fest is WAY expensive. I think, this year, I am going to go after. It's about half the price for a hotel room. I am going to go from Thursday to Tuesday so I can enjoy the weekend down there. All I have to do is book it. That's the scariest part.

ETA - aaaand I'm booked.

I just realized that the hotel I booked isn't on the beach. But it has a pool and is near the downtown area where things happen. I think I am ok with it.

Definitely! I am already planning the sight seeing!

Well, I think I'm going to cancel my Key West trip in light of the Hurricane. While I know tourism dollars will help, I don't want to be the asshole on vacation while people are rebuilding their lives.

Now, I just need to find another place to go and do Key West next year.
xoxoxoBruce • Sep 15, 2017 12:07 pm
I can understand you feeling that way. It's fucked up down there but fortunately not as bad as they expected.
A federal search and rescue team making its first flight over the Florida Keys on Tuesday was relieved to find far less damage than expected.

Sorry for your vacation situation, but this is just a random thought:

What if, what if a new kind of vacation became popular. Ease the guilt of visiting catastrophe-stricken, beautiful areas, by signing up for a Volunteerism Vacation. Like a "package deal" type setup, where a non-profit organization sets you up with modest accommodations, sets up some volunteer activities and shuttles you to the site, and also gives you plenty of personal time for chilling on the beach, etc.

Forego all the pageantry and pomp of the 'fancy hotel' and drowsy buffet browsing, instead --take a break from your desk job by putting on some work boots and getting a whole-body workout. Brag to your friends about the "charity work" you took time off for!

I've decided to wait until October20th to cancel. That's when they want to be open to tourists. If they are, I'll go. If not, I'll reschedule.

Flint - I would totally do that.

Leaving soon for Kissimmee. It was supposed to be one week Key West and one week Orlando. I rebooked about two weeks ago in fear that no timeshare would be available if I waited.

The Galleon Resort in Key West where I was supposed to be staying came back online about a little over a week ago claiming not too much damage, but even if I could rebook I am concerned about what is open.

I think the October 20th date is ambitious unless more than %70 of the restaurants and bars have reopened.

So it's two weeks in Kissimmee/Orlando at two different resorts.

Unless I'm willing to travel 2 hours, this means no deep sea fishing.:sniff:

Huh - I thought I posted here. I am definitely keeping the reservation. If they hadn't opened by the 20th, I would have changed it.

Key West opened to tourists on October 1st, officially. Residents returned September 16th. 95% of power has been restored to Key West as of an article posted September 22nd. They are accepting cruise ships, too.

I went, I ate, drank all the rum, didn't get sunburnt. Now, I'm back in NC and it is dreary and rainy. I would like to go back now

Yea they would. And, it's legal to walk around with a cocktail "Just don't be an asshole" <- advice from a local bartender :D

I have pics. I haven't gone through them yet. I am planning on that over the next couple days. I will share some here. :)

.....it's gonna be a while.....there are over 200 pictures of the sunset my last night. Never drink with the camera on multi-shot....
Elspode • Nov 11, 2017 11:19 pm
We spent just enough time in the Keys in August to wish we'd had more time to spend there.

Some pictures from Fort Zachery Taylor. There was an actual, active Naval base next door. With BIG signs instructing to not take pictures......where google maps kept wanting me to walk through
