This poster of nicknames for the states, was put out by a feed company in 1884.
I put it in a new thread because it's so big, and any smaller I couldn't read the names.

Geez, "Tar heels" and "Badgers" stuck around, why didn't "Puke" as a nickname for Missouri? :D

Those Knickerbockers are encroaching on Pennite territory.

That's cool UT, thank you!
Since the feed company who did this was in the neighboring state, Puke was probably a friendly poke in the eye. Then again there might have been some bitterness because Missouri was a claimed confederate state.

In 1940, the Council Against Intolerance in America commissioned artist Emma Bourne to produce a map (with no state boundaries) to illustrate how the US was a nation of migrants. The red banners show broadly where various groups of people settled and mark their religious and ethnic backgrounds.
