Ausangate is a mountain of the Willkanuta mountain range in the Andes of Peru.
This beautiful region, inhabited by alpaca and llama herding communities, serves as home to
one of the last remaining pastoralist societies in the world.
This beautiful region is comprised of four major geological features: The hanging glaciers
and glacial erosional valleys, the Andean uplift formed by Granit, the limestone forest, and
most notably, the beautiful Permian formations that naturally occur in a variety of colors
including blue, red, ochre, and turquoise.
Located just 3 hours from Cusco, but comparatively unknown until recent years when climate
change caused the overlying snow to melt and reveal the colorful formation.
There are locals with horses that charge $20-30 to take you to the top. Useful to know
because the hike begins at an altitude of 14,000 feet and rises to 17,000 feet.
Yeah, take the horse. The highest I've been walking is 14,000 ft and breathing was tough.
linkVery cool. reminds me of putting alternating layers of colored sand in a jar when I was a kid.
The guy at the really busy contractor's and decorator's paint store drips some paint onto the edge of the mixing machine every time he mixes paint and pulls a sample on a mixing stick. Over the decades it has grown to be about 4 feet tall and 5" at the peak spreading to about two feet were it meets the floor. He said when he retires he wants to take it with him.
From time to time he's had to trim parts of it and the cross section is amazing.
That first pic...how long before you got tired of looking at that? Ever?
like Fordite
Reminds me of
The Fence at my alma mater. Though it's
very bad form to do anything that would expose the cross-section.
There's a rock at Uni of Mich that's twice the size it used to be.....
I want some Fordite. A piece of history.
I have a piece, I bought it before it became popular.
Located just 3 hours from [strike]Cusco[/strike] nowhere.
17k feet!! Anyone remember what they've seen by the time they get back down?
Bruce thanks again for all the really cool things you put up. You rarely fail to impress/surprise/titillate/amaze/entertain/educate me/us.
