Nov 22nd, 2016: Bass Drums

Back in the '20s and 30's there wasn't a whole lot of entertainment.
There was moving picture shows in the bigger towns and cites and radio.
But no TV, or internet, the only game is town was dance halls.
There were thousands of bands big and small, some traveling to increase their fan base.
The most important thing was have drunken revelers remember your name.

The base drum became the billboard for the band that everyone would see.

Here's a lot more of them.

I've always liked the Beatles logo. I wonder who came up with it? Simple yet distinctive.

You can see the wavy edge of the hand painted lines on Ringo's drum kit here.

And now I'm talking to myself and answering my own questions.

Well, glatt, apparently Ringo and Brian Epstein went into a drum store in London to trade in Ringo's old drums and get a new kit. The store owner had recently become a Ludwig drum dealer, so he wanted to basically give Ringo a drum set for next to nothing in exchange for putting a Ludwig sticker on the drum. Brian agreed, but wanted the Beatles name on there too, and much much larger. He also wanted the "beat" part of Beatles to be emphasized. So the store owner sketched a design with input from Ringo and Brian, and grabbed a nearby sign painter to paint the logo.

TLDR: Ringo and Brian got Ivor Arbiter to design the logo and it was painted by Eddie Stokes

That was interesting.

Yes. I'm glad glatt asked.

Nice IotD, Bruce! I've attached screw-mountable zip strips to the inside of
my bass drum's hardware, and spooled rope lights around the interior.

Edit: (It's a Ludwig "Vistalite" bass drum--a clear acrylic shell.)

I saw a guy once who had a light inside his bass drum that flashed when he kicked it.

That was different.
