In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississippi
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans

(chorus)We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We looked down the river and we seed the British come
And there must have been a hundred of 'em beatin' on the drum
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring
We stood behind our cotton bales and didn't say a thing

(chorus)

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets 'till we looked 'em in the eyes
We held our fire 'till we seed their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and gave 'em
Well, we

(chorus)

Yeah they ran through the briers and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We fired our cannon 'till the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannonballs 'n' powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind

(chorus)

Yeah they ran through the briers and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Disappointed.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. That steering system is a new one to me, but appeared to be standard on all the carts. And those wheels are horrible.

It got so I could see the curves he would be wiping out on. I felt like I was learning the handling of the cart faster than he was.

The seemingly obvious tip, just like with Mario Carts, is that it's faster to slow down a little on the curves, because they pass you when you crash, and you pass them when they crash.

They seem prone to over correcting or the wheels' camber may cause the cart to flip?

Not sure if this qualifies for Rule 34, where if you can think of it, somebody had made pron of it.

I just stumbled across this thing called ASMR, where soft crinkly sounds are supposed to make you feel all tingly and relaxed. And there is a whole Youtube meme on this stuff. Videos with millions of views.

Totally safe for work. Just turn up the sound, or better yet, wear headphones.

the popping and hissing and clicking of the dry mouth is horrible. I remember a description of an orator in ancient Greece as having a voice that sounded like that of a panther that had been lapping oil from a bowl. These were not that.

I wanted to stab both those people in the face. I'm very sensitive to noises, and I'm getting worse. I can't stand people chewing, can't stand kissy smacky noises on the television, can't stand the neighbor's dog barking (that one is probably normal) and so many noises make me want to jump out of my skin or kill someone (by stabbing them in the face.)

I looked at this earlier and wondered if that sensitivity means I'm crazier than I thought. Well guess what? IT HAS A NAME AND EVERYTHING!!!!!

Might be hereditary: dad couldn't stand when I ate celery at the dinner table. One time he stabbed me in the face. (Not really)

It came down the creek but instead of following the bed where the creek bent, it went straight across and down the road. The mass that was pushing overflowed over that hill and down to fill the creek, at the same time the far side was going over the roof of the house, but the point kept on moving straight until there were enough places for the pushing mass to fall off the sides. I've been fascinated, perhaps even obsessed, with the Oroville Dam. At first, I was trying to figure out if there really was a danger to the towns below when it was overflowing. But now, I'm focused on just how bad the damage was.

The videos we all saw of the torrents of water coming down the broken spillway and over the emergency spillway were taken from so far away, the scale of the thing is just not possible to comprehend. This dam is massive. Even in this post, I try to show a picture of how massive it is, but files size restrictions won't let me.

Look at just the EDGE of the damaged spillway. Now look for the people. How many do you see? None? Look closer.

What I really encourage you to do is to check out the videos from drone footage from the California Department of Water Resources. Here' one from yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpXtMZwpDqs Make sure to watch on a computer in 1080 mode with the video at full screen. It's amazing. As of this writing, only 178 people before you have looked at this video.

After it's over, take a look at some of their other videos.

Then look at some before pictures of the spillway. It looked perfectly fine.

Those fucking libtards in California, right? Ignoring that engineer's report that the dam spillway needed some maintenance. It's easy to think that this is just an isolated incident in California. But you've all seen those occasional news stories that come out that talk about old bridges that need work, and infrastructure, blah, blah, blah.

There is an Oroville Dam type of infrastructure problem in basically every city and county in the US. Not a dam, of course, but a bridge, or a highway, or a metro system, or a tunnel, or an overpass. You know which ones. You pass them all the time and ignore the crumbling concrete and rusty rebar poking out. They are EVERYWHERE.

This country was built by our grandparents, and its expiration date is here.

Good thing we're fighting about illegal immigrants.

But yeah, check out the videos. They are amazing. The scale.

How can any of us reg'lar folk tell whether the state of infrastructure is acceptable? Once in a while there is a bad failure but I can't tell whether it's neglect or error. I don't know what "maintenance" is and how much of it is needed, and I don't know what "inspection" reveals and whether it's good enough.

The only thing I know for sure is, making it more political will make us dumber and angrier about it and will lead to a greater number of failures. Somehow this part needs to be left strictly in the hands of engineering, and out of the hands of politicians and the general public.
glatt • Mar 4, 2017 10:00 am
I agree.

Engineering makes decisions all the time about trade offs. You can spend lots of money over engineering a structure so it lasts a very very long time. But then you can't spend that money on other projects.

Lately (in the last decade) there has been a big push by authorities to make smaller dams able to withstand 100 year floods. (Or may it's 500 year floods, I don't remember). I think with climate change this is a smart approach. But I know of two lakes this has impacted. One is on Goshen VA and the Boy Scouts had to spend millions to upgrade a dam. The other is NEPA where I have a relative who owns a house on a pond. The state drained the pond because there was no money to fix the dam. Now they live on a meadow full of ragweed and deer ticks with a small creek running through it.

But I also disagree.

Political leaders need to make decisions about what sorts of infrastructure should be funded.

Do you throw stupid money at a stadium to enrich the team owners? Fill potholes and repair crumbling concrete abutment? Build new roads? Expand an airport's capacity?

Engineering can tell you how much various projects will cost and how urgent a repair might be, but leaders have to decide what they want to prioritize.
Undertoad • Mar 4, 2017 11:01 am
They always build the stadiums, don't they?

Maybe not. In San Diego they actually put it to a public vote. And the vote lost bigtime, 57 to 43 against.

A few weeks later, the owner announced the San Diego Chargers will become the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017, as a new stadium is being built there for the team.

Good or bad for San Diego in the long run? ...who knows... it certainly isn't going to make LA any better...

~

Meanwhile the people in Philly are very happy to see funding come together for a "cap" over I-95, so the people of the eastern section of the city will have direct access to the waterfront, with a huge public park and grass and drainage and whatnot.

West Philly is still a shithole, but the cap will be glorious for the people who live in $1M townhouses in Society Hill.

PennDOT and its 6,000 structurally deficient bridges will be spending $100M for that cap

And we all say, well hey, if the cap makes Philadelphia into an even greater destination for the next 100 years, because instead of pedestrian bridges over the highway, we have a lovely park over the highway...? Isn't that an amazing investment in our future? More money later?

Mmmmmmmmaybe. But the reason this project gets big traction is because, in the last ten years, smart thinkers have come to the conclusion that highway access to central parts of cities has actually hurt the cities.

Those highways were the big money infrastructure projects 30-50 years ago, promising all the benefits etc. etc. so what happened? Now the big projects are having them be tunnels, or having them have ceilings.

...so couldn't we all just not have the big infrastructure projects 30-50 years ago and save two rounds of this stuff? ...who knows...
Happy Monkey • Mar 4, 2017 11:07 am
Paying the engineers is in the hands of the politicians.
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 4, 2017 11:47 am
Yes, leave it in the hands of engineering which it pretty much is. But engineers and their techs, can only do the inspections, calculations, and reports.

Then it goes to the politicians to acquire funding, including fighting with other states for federal money, allocate that money for a specific project, and award contracts to their campaign contributors and cronies.

Example- Right across the road from me they're spending a zillion dollars turning an abandoned rail line into a paved walking trail with a landscaped parking area. Yet the road going by looks like a WW I battlefield. That pisses people off.

Thank you Dana, that was fun. It shows degenerates aren't new, nor all male.

I think we've seen this before, a camera mounted on the front of a streetcar in San Francisco. But a film archivist has cleaned it up, added sound, and nailed the date to April 14th, 1906, when driving was fun. :haha:
Accuracy: Automobile sounds are all either Ford Model T, or Model A, which came out later, but which have similarly designed engines, and sound quite close to the various cars shown in the film. The horns are slightly inaccurate as mostly bulb horns were used at the time, but were substituted by the far more recognizable electric "oogaa" horns, which came out a couple years later. The streetcar sounds are actual San Francisco streetcars. Doppler effect was used to align the sounds.

If this is the same video (19-something foot) I saw this morning on FB...

...the amazing part is the transfer of energy into motion: he propels nearly straight up, "jack-knifes" his lower body over the top of the pole, and then "snakes" that motion upwards, "whipping" his upper body out of the way.

At about 2:10 what looks to me like a piece of clothing appears on the left, makes me think it was a helicopter not a drone.

On 23 March, at 2.45 a.m., an explosion was registered at missile and artillery storage facilities located near Balakliya, Kharkiv Oblast(eastern Ucraine). According to official information, about 125,000 tons of ammunition were stored there. Volodymyr Groysman, Ukraine’s PM, has left for the place of action this morning to “ensure the safety of civilians.”

Ukrainian officials claimed that this explosion is a subversive action. Anatoliy Matios, Ukraine’s chief military prosecutor, stressed that the fire broke out at two sites of one of the facilities, which is a clear sign of subversive action. However, the investigation is also considering criminal omission, even though “it does not seem likely.”

I was going to put this in the Doctor Who thread, but then I thought, actually, this stands divorced from it's wider context, as just a powerful speech about war and beautifully delivered.

The set-up, as much as is needed anyway, is two commanders each ready to launch utter destruction on the other, with Earth's fate in the balance. A human commander and the commander of an alien force who have been hiding among us and have broken away from their original invasion force to launch their own revolutionary bid for power.

The Doctor, an impossibly old time travelling alien, has contrived to get both commanders in the room together. There are two boxes, each with two buttons. One button will destroy give them victory and the other bring about their own destruction.

Full scene only available in this little box, so take full screen. The scene gets giong about a minute in, but there's some nice set up.

And why the fuck did United stand pat on $800? I heard somewhere that the actual number was several hundred dollars higher, and I *BET* they could have found four people for some amount of money dramatically less that the cost of refunding the fares for all 70 passengers... nevermind the hit to their stock price, the hit to their already well-established reputation (United Breaks Guitars), and what I reckon is the inevitable lawsuit/settlement.

Who had decision making authority in this debacle?

We won the war, we are invincible, was the attitude of the drivers and spectators. No safety precautions whatsoever for anyone, in this short teaser for a 30 minute documentary.

glatt • Jun 13, 2017 11:20 am
The point about driving "in the middle" is good in theory, however it falls apart when examined. If you are traveling the same speed as the car in front of you at a safe distance, and the car behind you wants to go faster and is tailgating you, you can only get "in the middle" by speeding up to get away from the car behind you. But that will close the safe gap you had in front of you, so now you are the tailgater who has to brake hard all the time when there is a slowdown. Plus the driver behind you is a tailgater themselves, so they aren't going to let you increase the gap behind your car. They will close it. The only power against traffic you have as a driver is to follow the car in front of you at a safe distance and match its speed. Better yet, try to dampen the stop and go bullshit they are pulling by leaving a large enough gap in front of you that you never have to slam on your brakes.

Also, automated cars will not get rid of traffic lights because there are still pedestrians who need to cross the street.

I agree with the video that once traffic is heavy in all lanes, it's the abrupt lane changers who turn it into stop and go traffic instead of heavy flowing traffic.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 13, 2017 3:04 pm

In heavy traffic where there is someone directly in front of them, or where the lane ahead is empty?

Makes a huge difference.

That's a stupid question, you know what the fuck he's talking about. :eyebrow:
glatt • Jun 14, 2017 8:35 am
No I don't. The video is discussing heavy stop-and-go traffic, which would tend to make me think that is what he is talking about.

But in heavy stop-and-go traffic, every single person in the left lane WANTS to be going faster than they are. None of them are assholes.

So maybe it's not about heavy stop-and-go traffic. Or maybe it is. Beats me.

xoxoxoBruce • Sep 14, 2017 11:19 pm
Yes he was quite a guy. The only thing that seemed to make him unhappy was his hair. As a starving artist he got it permed to save money. When he became a recognized public figure people identified him with the hair and he was stuck with it.

I don't remember if I mentioned it before but I have half a dozen unsigned paintings, 9" x 18", on cheap gray shirt cardboard, in the Bob Ross style. My family bought them for $5 each, from a guy outside the Piggy Wiggly in Anchorage, AK, during the early '50s. Bob Ross was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage at that time. Makes me wonder if it was him or the guy who taught him the style?

Does it use a rudder to steer? I didn't see any. If not, there is a tremendous amount of leverage force against that train car that ties it to the tracks.

Presumably this would also travel to cities. Does it clear obstacles like buildings and overpasses with enough distance that the wind from the props doesn't damage other property?

I don't see what this craft gives you that a train doesn't already provide. It's wide instead of long and skinny, but that's about it.

Good old Matthias Wandel. I've been occasionally singing his praises here for a decade or more. He even designed my bandsaw. Did you hear about my bandsaw?

He's gained a decent following on YouTube and I'm happy for him.

He's had videos in the past dealing, with a mouse problem he has in a shed in the country. But this video is a fun one, where he does experiments on how small a hole those mice can get through. Make sure you have the sound on, because he has fun with sound effects.

Last night I watched Coastal Railways with Julie Walters.
In one sequence she travelled on the footplate of a steam loco and, to her obvious enjoyment, played the first half dozen notes of 'On Ilkley Moor' on the whistle.

It's often referred to as Yorkshire's anthem and is usually sung in an almost impenetrable dialect.
There are a number of versions on YouTube, which leave something to be desired, but it has to be said that the better ones appear to have been recorded by 'choirs' in an advanced state of refreshment.

Any road oop, as we Yorkshiremen say. Sithee. ;)

Meh. His points are 100% valid, but the passion is performed. He wants to run for president as much as Jeff Flake does. The only truly great unscripted moment in that video is when he says, "You're under oath," and she squirms like a whore in church. She knows she's lying.

If you get a chance to watch the full original interview they're talking about at the start, I highly recommend. It is a fucking car crash of an interview that provides a masterclass by the interviewee in staying calm and reasoned . Here's a clip though:

I may have guessed right!

I asked Google "Why does the VIMEO URL link display a video?" Among the results I found was Vimeo supports oEmbed, which allows you to turn a Vimeo URL into an embed link. I followed a link therein to oEmbed is an open standard for embedding videos and/or images into a website. A link in that page led me to the explanation:

oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites. The simple API allows a website to display embedded content (such as photos or videos) when a user posts a link to that resource, without having to parse the resource directly. …

1. Quick Example

A consumer (e.g. WordPress) makes the following HTTP request:
http://www.flickr.com/services/oembed/?format=json&url=http%3A//www.flickr.com/photos/bees/2341623661/
The provider (e.g. Flickr) then responds with an oEmbed response:
{
"version": "1.0",
"type": "photo",
"width": 240,
"height": 160,
"title": "ZB8T0193",
"url": "http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3123/2341623661_7c99f48bbf_m.jpg",
"author_name": "Bees",
"author_url": "http://www.flickr.com/photos/bees/",
"provider_name": "Flickr",
"provider_url": "http://www.flickr.com/"
}
This allows the consumer to turn a URL to a Flickr photo page into structured data to allow embedding of that photo in the consumer's website.

In our case, the Cellar is the consumer and VIMEO is the provider. It seems that the provider can choose to convert the VIMEO URL into an oEmbed HTTP request at the provider's site. The sharing properties of your video does say that it contains a text code. The provider (VIMEO) then gives an oEmbed response and controls whether or not posting a URL results in a video appearing.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it (until someone proves me wrong). :p:

I was going to put this in the 'Idiot of the Day' thread, but I'm in a reasonably charitable mood, being replete with Sunday lunch, so I didn't.

Watch out for the sparks from the fasteners on his gloves when they make contact with the road surface.

The comments suggest that the location is Coal Creek Canyon CO.

Anyway, should I have the good fortune to visit Colorado once again, Hertz will have to forgo my custom as I shall be bringing my own skateboard.

Tickets available at all prices.

Stupid, risking your own neck is one thing but endangering others is irresponsible.
captainhook455 • Aug 19, 2018 10:45 am
So true. If skateboarding here someone would have taken him out on a curve. I never ride close to the center line unless I can see way ahead.
sexobon • Aug 19, 2018 11:10 am
I've done 55 mph on a bicycle coasting downhill through the foothills of the Colorado Rockies; but, did it at 02:00 hrs. when there was no traffic. Even if a vehicle appeared, I'd see it's headlights from a distance and have time to react. A full moon coupled with a bicycle headlight provided adequate illumination. Max speed was limited by the sharpness and frequency of road curves, the height of my center of gravity, and traction of the bicycle tires.

Body position doesn't help much until one achieves about 90 mph. That's when a body starts to pick up aerodynamic properties that can be used to stabilize position and control changes. At 110 mph, I've been able to lock a motorcycle throttle, take my hands away from the steering and raise them to shoulder level using wind resistance and my free fall (parachuting) control skills to keep myself and the bike stable.
captainhook455 • Aug 19, 2018 2:55 pm
I set the cruise on my bike yesterday at 62 on a 2 lane road without my hands on the bars for about 8 miles. Just stick my knee into the wind for curves. I frequently ride like this. When I had my Goldwing I would sit on the passenger seat up against the tour pack.
sexobon • Aug 19, 2018 3:25 pm
At that speed, the shifting of your weight when you put your knee out; also, leaning into the curve have more to do with it than wind resistance. It's more like riding a bicycle with no hands.

At high speeds, you don't have to stick parts of your body out, you just rotate the flats of your body.

The Making of the English Working Class is one my favourite history books. made soup the other night, recipe called for a little cornstarch to thicken it.

cornstarch and water in the right proportion behaves much the same way. with some regular agitation it becomes more fluid. When left to settle, the first stirring motions reveal a hardened peanut butter consistency, quite solid.

perhaps you've seen the videos where people run across a swimming pool filled with cornstarch and water, but when standing quietly on the surface, they sink.

This is the same liquefaction phenomenon that happens in some earthquakes in some regions that wreaks utter havoc on structures.

I can thoroughly recommend Lockheed Blackbird: Beyond the Secret Missions by Paul Crickmore.
There's plenty of choice on Amazon.com from about $21.
I haven't linked to the page given that availability and pricing tends to vary from one day to the next.

Abebooks.com is also worth a look, but check which edition is on offer.
The latest edition was published in November 2016.

In the meantime, Google 'SR 71 Baltic Express'.

This morning I read a review of the book 'Confessions of a Bookseller' by Shaun Bythell. No, it's not what you think.

He owns a second hand book shop in Wigtown, which is Scotland's centre for the trade and, in the review, comes across as somewhat irascible, a Basil Fawlty type as it were.

I had a dig around and found his website and a video in which he reads an extract from his earlier book 'Diary of a Bookseller'.

It shines a light on his character quite nicely.

Hay-on-Wye, just on the Welsh side of the Wales-England border, is another regional centre for the second hand book trade.

Quite why is a bit of a mystery, although judging by the numbers of booksellers I think that they have probably established a breeding colony there.

Wikipedia fleshes out that great story a little:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_New_Guinea_Gremlin_Special_rescue

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glider_snatch_pick-up_technique

Trying to figure out how two gliders can be picked up on one trip.

Here, too:
https://www.npr.org/2011/04/26/135710893/a-wwii-survival-epic-unfolds-deep-in-shangri-la

"...when you have no choice, you have no fear..."
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 25, 2019 1:06 am
They can't, at their altitude the could only fly out a glider with 5 people, then fly one in and fly 5 more people out. They did that three times as explained in minute 7 of the video.
Diaphone Jim • Aug 25, 2019 12:18 pm
From the second Wiki link above, about the technique in general:

"The steel wire was then winched in. It was possible for one plane to pick up two gliders in this way, in two passes."
sexobon • Aug 25, 2019 4:14 pm
There was another extraction technique available, from around 1943, as you can see about 20 seconds into this video.

It wouldn't become refined as the Fulton Extraction Technique for another dozen or so years though.

Setting up a pick-up zone, as seen at the beginning of the video, was part of my training. A CIA STOL aircraft with hook actually came in to make sure it worked.

I've seen an IRL Fulton Extraction. Better them than me.

Yeah I don't get it, the first glider is going to be a ways behind the tug so I can't see how that wouldn't get in the way of grabbing a second. Maybe the glider pilot flies it higher than the tug out of the way? After all it is a plane.

Those three string bales of straw are probably close to 150 lbs, man my back hurts just thinking about them. I preferred the 65 lb bales you could grab one with each hand to stay balanced.
Diaphone Jim • Sep 4, 2019 12:39 pm
Looks more like six string and probably 1000 lbs +.
But there has been a conspiracy over the years between balers and gravity to make them nearly impossible to raise off the ground, leading to stackin' 'em knee-high instead of shoulder.
Undertoad • Sep 4, 2019 12:59 pm
I tried working with those small bales once, unloading the truck at a small farm. After a half hour, I had to quit, because my throat was closing and my skin was breaking out in hives. Allergic.
glatt • Sep 4, 2019 1:45 pm

By the hour?!?! Fuck that.

We were paid by the bale. Damned if I can remember how much...no clue. But you could make a pretty good lick in a long day.

A dime/bale, maybe...
xoxoxoBruce • Sep 5, 2019 5:52 pm
Stack 'em three wide, 12 high, 15 ft long on two trucks, and 22 ft long on two trucks. Two guys on the ground and one on the truck, we'd load the four trucks in just over an hour with Grandpa Lipshitz (came to this country in 1911 with 35 cents yada yada) driving. 90% of the time they would have to be roped down for over the road, CT po-po frowned on leaving bales on the road. You could smoke in the cab but not in the field, and had to spit on the dash and snuff it when you were done.
Diaphone Jim • Sep 5, 2019 6:54 pm
Almost all of my hay hauling (of my own cut and bale as well as bought) has been in my '60 GMC 3/4 long bed step side and most of that has been 33 bales a load.
Been at it 47 years.
Never lost one on the road (knock wood), but a bunch picking up in the field. God I hate to pick 'em up and stack 'em a second time. Those have mostly been from leaving the truck in granny and working at its pace.
Both glad and sorry that is behind me.
xoxoxoBruce • Sep 5, 2019 8:11 pm

Praise the lord and pass the Charmin. No, I'm not being facetious, after years of hearing this and that have left the country it's a breath of fresh air. I watched Chainsaw Al Dunlap destroy Scott Paper and thousands of local's livelihoods.

They've been a strong local employer for a long time. They run a swing shift on the production lines which some guys love and others leave. A high school buddy has been an electrician down there for years. Good pay, regular work.

This Woodpecker flies back a forth between the feeder and a post several times. The video is slowed down so you can see it. I'm amazed how much of each flight is done with its wings folded.

BigV • Mar 30, 2020 10:02 pm
I believe that's known as bounding flight.
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 31, 2020 12:04 am
I didn't think they ever flew without using the wings for something unless dodging obstructions. Obviously that's not true.
Diaphone Jim • Mar 31, 2020 12:22 pm
Almost all birds' bodies are themselves aerodynamic, saving lots of energy.
That is a great video.
I am surprised at how repetitive his flight back and forth is, as well as what picky little booger he is.

Nah. They've gone straight for the LED look.

Nixie tubes are so yesterday. ;)
xoxoxoBruce • Apr 18, 2020 12:29 am
No no, LEDs are too flat, nixies have depth, they have class, they could be contenders.

They could add the day people seem to be having so much trouble with.

I also made one but of the normal materials and scale. I made it in woodshop in a previous century. It's lost now though. Mine worked well, why didn't yours work DJ?
Diaphone Jim • May 2, 2020 5:24 pm
It is the equal masses of the balls in the cradle that allow for the uniform transfer of momentum and the neato patterns.
Bowling balls are all the same size but of different weights (mass) and. as a result, go helter-skelter.
I eventually put together a well-matched set and it did work, all the way up to eight balls.

Interesting that they are just over or under the density of water, hence some float and some sink.
Makes a good bar or swimming pool bet.

The low key procession of would be jumpers made me smile and laugh out loud.
I went through that and remember thinking that if I didn't miss the water altogether, I would belly flop and rip myself open.
I also remember a tsunami flowing up my nose when I finally jumped after the humiliation of first climbing down the ladder.

Same here! I felt a vicarious shiver as they tried and failed to tiptoe to the edge. I gasped in solidarity as they hurtled into the void. No jump scares here, less *is* more.

On a completely different note, I heard a news story today of a fellow who was on his way to work and when his truck broke down, he got his skateboard and his Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry juice and just went to work. Well, he also had some tunes, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. Turns out he recorded a TikTok video of him cruising and grooving. His post has been viewed many millions of times, the story's quite uplifting.

But the homages to his completely groovy TikTok are *a* *mazing*. Here's one compilation:

Yeah, when I did it I miscalculated the time to the water badly and almost back flopped a dive. It did not feel good.
