At 2261.5 lbs, Richard Wallace of Greene, R.I., clinched the title from his son, Ron, whose 2,230-pound fruit set the record in 2015.

Giant pumpkins have beefed up immensely since the fruits broke the 500-pound barrier in the 1980s. “Basically it’s like horse racing,” Ron Wallace, who was the first person to grow a 1-ton pumpkin, told Smithsonian magazine in 2015. “We’re breeding big pumpkins into big pumpkins every year to create bigger pumpkins.”

It is possible that, within a decade or two, a master pumpkineer’s produce could tip the scales at 3,000 pounds, according to Danny Dill, son of legendary gourd grower Howard Dill. (Three decades ago, Howard Dill created the Atlantic Giant pumpkin variety.)

What'd they do, grow it on a pallet & use a chainsaw to take it off the vine???

My mom's record is like 887 pounds, and she had to have a forklift and like 4 big dudes to get that one into a truck...how they offloaded it at the fairgrounds I do not know (all I know is that the forklift and big dudes did not go with...).

Yes, it takes heavy equipment to handle them, that's why they are growing them denser to not collapse.

Solid they may be in that there is much less cavity than normal, but they are about 92% water.
This year's Half Moon Bay, California contest winner fell 350 pounds short at 1910.

This brings to mind a watermelon math problem and an offer of oral sex, and I suddenly got a strong case of missing Brianna. :sniff:

What kind of stylus would you use to play a pumpkin record?
Gravdigr • Oct 22, 2016 4:35 pm
