See, you could totally make up some weird stuff about Japan like this and I would buy it. This is a lie, isn't it?

I immediately saw the title and thought about the weeping angels from Doctor Who.

The Japanese have some fascinating culture.

Japan has been the leader of disturbing since the Sun Goddess Amaterasu gave birth the the first Emperor, or at least his ancestors.

A distant second in disturbing is awarded to Chinese cuisine.

after that, everyone else is practically DNF.

I think it's disturbing that they need something like this, but I don't think it's disturbing that they have it. The way I look at it, the Japanese are so culturally fucked that something like this is good for them.

They have a word for when someone young and healthy works so hard at their white-collar job that they drop dead on the company floor. Not just a conceptual, joking word. This is an actual thing that happens, on a regular basis, and there are charities for the widows of such men. Their grammatical word for "I" doesn't really mean "self" in the way we think of it; it's closer to "the sum of the accomplishments I have achieved in my life." They could use some involuntary emotional exposure.

Besides, is it really weirder than any other corporate team-building exercise? Ropes courses and trust falls?

Three centuries of isolation will do that to a country. That and the whole octopus thing,,,
