Some actors and some musicians get all the headlines… some of them ‘deserve’ it while others don’t have as much talent in their whole body as others have in their little finger… which actors and artists do you think ‘got it’ and which ones do you think have no business being in the business?
Undertoad • Apr 21, 2003 12:22 am
Over-rated, actors: the lot of them. The entire lot.

Are we being forced to become part of a focus group here? Without compensation, I mean. I'm happy to play along for the right amount of cash. I have my finger on the pulse of the nation, after all.

I'm sort of with UT... the whole celebrity thing is overrated. I just like certain people, and don't really care about the others. And the ones I like I may pay attention to the next thing they have coming out, but I don't care what they do beyond that either. (And I don't give a damn what anybody thinks about the war; it doesn't influence me one way or the other what entertainment I choose.) (Come to think of it, that describes my attitude about the punditocracy as well. I've never felt the obligation to give special credence to any one person's opinion just because they get paid by a newspaper to write it down once a week.)

Well, I'm still a big fan of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in particular. Kevin Spacey gets big nods, as does Jimmy Stewart. And John Cusack is my hero. So I think those guys deserve it.

OverRated: Madonna (Mirwais), Norah Jones, The New Star Wars

UnderRated: Meredith Brooks, Fly Poets, Strongbad sings the blues

Bang on: Sting, U2, The Old Star Wars

Underrated - Tom Hanks and Ron Howard

Both were actors who made the transition to become critically acclaimed directors and producers. Hanks does all three.

lol... um, no focus group...

I totally agree with Kevin Spacey. Others: Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Joe Pesci, Gene Hackman, Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Tim Curry, Jodie Foster, Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe, Ed Harris

Overrated: Meg Ryan, Richard Gere, Russell Crowe, Leo DiCap, Orlando Bloom, Colin Farrell.

Haven't made my mind up about Nicole Kidman or Catherine Zeta-Jones. Anyone have an opinion?

Music-wise:

overrated: Britney, JLo

underrated: Queen Latifah, Aaliyah (rip) both amazing musicians and actors, gril groups like Lillix. They are totally hot but underrated because of the negative image from people like the Spice Girls. Have you heard of them? Will look for link.
starcam03 • Apr 24, 2003 3:15 pm
No one else has an opinion? .... wow...

Here's the link for Lillix: http://www.lillix.com Pretty cool, yes? I think they are going to get really big. Now you see why I say underrated?

I want to add John Mayer to the overrated category, too, and Rosie O'Donnell to the underrated.

I appreciate the sentiment, but in the interest of accuracy, I've worked with many, many indie artists who are indie because they're horrible. They make a virtue (not selling out) out of neccesity (no one's buying).

By no means all. But certainly many.

Okay maybe not any indi artist, but some of them are good and get no credit becuase they aren't backed by a big label. And beyond indie anyone who isn't on the charts or backed by the music channels are usually very underrated. It always amazes me how I can play the music of an unkonown band one day and everyone hates it, but then MTV plays it and everyone thinks it's great.

24-7 Spyz are one of the most underrated bands in the history of music...I will say that until my last breath.

That is all.

I'm assuming you're joking here.

Rosie O'Donnel is a hypocrite, and for that, I'll never forgive her. Lobbying against gun ownership when - surprise - her bodyguard is registered to carry a firearm. Yes folks, she's more important than you. Rosie can wipe my ass with her tongue.

Thanks Dave, how is a guy supposed to get that image out of his head?
Cam • Apr 25, 2003 9:15 am

Undertoad • Apr 25, 2003 9:27 am

Didja hear about Rosie O'Donnel? Yeah, she drowned. They found her face down in Ricki Lake.

Regarding underrated/unknown musicians, CD Baby is agrat place to find music you might like from bands no one has ever heard of. You can search on "sounds like" criteria - sounds like the Beatles, for example.

CDs are usually MUCH cheaper than at a retail store so you can experiment a little more.
