What would you be if you had your druthers?

Food - Pizza, everybody loves pizza (or, one of my casseroles).

Garment - a comfy t-shirt, who wants to hang around in a closet all the time?

Appliance - oven.

Room - kitchen, good things happen in kitchens (or one of your quieter tap rooms).

Illness - tonsillitis, maybe. I don't want to kill people. Not most of the time, anyway.;)

War - War on drugs. C'mon, now, who's surprised by this one?:D

I'm gonna steal 3 of grav's answers because I can't improve on them.

Pizza
Old t-shirt
Kitchen

And I'm going to go with Wine Fridge

Toxoplasmosis, because mind control

And war is a tough one. There was some young adult book about a chocolate war. I'm going with that. A chocolate war. I picture throwing candy bars around.

Food: Toasted bacon sandwich.

Garment: Barbour jacket. Tough as old boots and will last forever.

Appliance: Toaster. See 'Food' above.

Room: South facing conservatory.

Illness: A slight cold. :)

War: Third World War. Let's face it, if you're going to have a war, the Third World is the best place to have it. ;)

I think for me it would be:

Food - the humble potato. Plain but versatile
Garment - Rocket Dog biker boots - because they're sturdy and very, very cool
Appliance - kettle. If in doubt, make tea.
Room - bedroom, duh
Illness - Multiple Sclerosis. Every day's a surprise
War - The War of Jenkin's Ear (1739-1748). Just for the name.

Having read DanaC's post, I think that I will also choose a kettle for the appliance category.

After all, what goes better with a bacon sandwich than a cuppa?

Pessimistic
Food: Soylent Green. It's people! So it's me!
Garment: Sweatpants. The general public sees it but doesn't want to, considers it too loose and casual
Appliance: Dryer. Takes a lot of energy; basically sits in the corner and quivers.
Room: Panic room. Duh
Illness: Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Duh
War: US Civil War: In the end I'll be fine, and whole, but at what cost?

Optimistic
Food: Tanzanian peaberry coffee; Uncommon, strong, and probably even good for you
Garment: Mormon underwear. Underneath it all, I'm magic and sacred.
Appliance: Stick blender. It's surprisingly powerful.
Room: The war room. Gentlemen, you can't fight in here!
Illness: Post-nasal drip. You think it's funny but it's snot
War: Iraq 1. Generally considered useful and a good idea.
