80,000 Canadians have been told to flee the fire at Ft McMurray.

I'm surprised those cars don't seem to be weighed down with more personal belongings.
xoxoxoBruce • May 4, 2016 10:42 am
Ain't nobody got time for that. ;)

before the oil people came the population was 2000, now it's 80,000. Probably half of them have a family elsewhere and don't have a lot of stuff.

Nasty...
Griff • May 5, 2016 7:27 am
Craziness. Not much time to react and then you end up in a traffic jam.

This picture jumped out at me. A neighborhood where the homes are burned to the foundations which is not a surprise from what we've been hearing. But the clusters weren't cheek by jowl, the grass is still green, and trees singed but standing. I guess airborne sparks/cinders and a hot wind, but still freaky.

With the tar sands being kind of on the ropes economically and politically, I wonder if people just move on?
xoxoxoBruce • May 11, 2016 12:12 am
I can't get over the homes completely destroyed while across the street, even next door untouched.
xoxoxoBruce • May 11, 2016 12:13 am
They had to get out in a hurry, just leave the two bikes and snowmobile.

Knowing a fire is coming, why then would anyone leave their vehicles behind? Do so many have defunct vehicles in their driveways?

Because you can only drive one at a time.

No.
BigV • May 11, 2016 3:58 pm
Well, they do now.
glatt • May 11, 2016 4:03 pm
Yes.

Marshall the pig survived! He's black, not burnt. :D

Doorbell camera video of firefighters trying to save a home in Fort McMurray.

Impressive, the amount of work they put into that.

I guess it started from embers on the roof.

Fire apparently started underneath the porch. It used the right side column to get into an attic space above the porch. Then spread out to eventually pop through the roof.

Firemen first attacked obvious fire underneath. Then discovered a fire popping out of the roof. Eventually discovered how fire got above the porch. Chopped a hole into that column to kill that fire. Then pulled the entire porch ceiling down to confirm it had not spread into the house.

Firemen were careful to not be underneath that roof if not absolutely necessary.

How does a fire start underneath the house when nothing around it is burning? The fire could have traveled down the post also.

What is this gravity of which you speak?
You are too emotional. Stop making sense.

Door bell camera demonstrates why so many adjacent houses burned while others in the same neighborhood remain intact. Those embers would start fires even a mile away. In this case, it may have gotten under the porch where leaves had collected. First pictures show smoke only coming out from under the porch.

Apparently columns were constructed without a fire stop (ie sheet rock) inside.

Two minutes into the evacuation, which couldn't start until the RCMP gave the signal and had a helicopter in the air, gets scary with falling embers and traffic jammed...

It's like getting out of a parking lot after a concert, except with a wildfire chasing you.

If you're buying a bike, be careful of Canadian Craig's list...

What is the state of this fire?
glatt • May 28, 2016 10:46 am
They call them provinces up there, not states.
xoxoxoBruce • May 28, 2016 3:34 pm
:lol2:
Now you've done it.

Providence is the domain of critics. We need a better state of mind.

Is Rhode Island now a suburb of Boston?
