Pretty good article in the Washingtonian about Pho's origins, flavors and why a lot of Pho restaurants have a number tagged on the name. For youse guys in the DC area they name the best. YMMV.
I eat at Pho 75 all the time - it's also on Route 50 but not to be confused with Pho 50.
I was not aware of the difference between Northern and Southern Pho but that definitely explains why it is so plain in some places.
Occasionally, we have Pho at the place the guy in the pic below owned and ran until a few years ago.
