October 2015 Theme

bbro • Oct 7, 2015 3:58 pm
Getting these from the photo group at work :)

October's theme is "Unexpected". Post your photos here!
Sundae • Oct 7, 2015 4:05 pm
Just out of interest, does the photo have to stand alone, or can it be annotated?
I mean, the Word Association thread is generally accepted to need no comments.

Yes, I'm British and we like rules.
Makes it more fun to break them in general.

But not here, that would be rotten manners.
BigV • Oct 7, 2015 9:26 pm
given the context of the previous conversations, will penguins *still* be a surprise, or not?

Annotated? You mean like add a comment? Sure - no problem with me. There's really not any other rules except to try and follow the theme. And no NSFW photos. Also, I think it would be more fun for them to actually be photos you take - not just googled.

Depends on the penguin photo - lol. And it's not surprise - it's Unexpected. So, like a penguin rollerblading. :P

Definitely your own pics.

Seconded.

Thirded.
And I will try not to include anything that needs an explanation, because a picture is supposed to be worth a thousand blahblahblah something.
glatt • Oct 8, 2015 8:10 am
I would say another rule in addition to taking it yourself is that you have to take it during the time period of the challenge. No digging through the personal archives.

I like that!

No NSFW pix, no archived pix, gotta take it m'self...You people are trying to get me to get up and do something, ain't ya?:eyebrow:
Gravdigr • Oct 8, 2015 3:26 pm
Multiple entries? Or one pic per player, per theme?

IMHO - I would say start with one. This may change depending on the response we get this month (even though we started late).

Actually, I've been thinking about it and I think one picture is too redistricting, I mean, this is just a challenge, not a competition. Don't go nuts, now, and flood the thread. Maybe 5-10 limit?

What do you guys think? This is a photocracy, not a photatership :p:

I'm planning on going out and taking some spontaneous pictures later today. I hope something unexpected pops up.
bbro • Oct 9, 2015 10:50 am
Good luck! I am going out tomorrow for the same reason :)
Sundae • Oct 9, 2015 11:46 am
I don't have my plug in thingy (technical term there) so I can't upload any photos while I'm here [at my parents']
So I've not been looking out for opportunities I will admit.

I'll sort that out when I get home.
Rhianne • Oct 12, 2015 4:37 pm
I definitely wasn't expecting this...

Not a very good picture but it's definitely the best entry so far!
lumberjim • Oct 12, 2015 4:49 pm
my, that WAS unexpected.

and I hope you had to revers your toilet tissue roll for the picture... cuz it's on backwards. ...unless you have a bad cat.
Rhianne • Oct 12, 2015 5:10 pm
Oh, my goodness, you didn't think that was MY toilet roll?

I assure you I have no need for such things!

Got a phone call from my wife who was out teaching my daughter to drive. She was flustered and needed our AAA info to call a tow truck. I drove over to meet them and be there when the truck arrived. I didn't expect to see this.

xoxoxoBruce • Oct 12, 2015 8:27 pm
They were in San Francisco?

She was practicing parking in an empty lot and slowly pulled into a spot and stepped on the brakes. Except it was the gas. So she stepped on the brakes harder, except it was the gas. She's mortified.

Car's fine other than a bunch of deep scratches on the front bumper. No damage.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 12, 2015 9:37 pm
Nobody hurt and minimal vehicle damage, that's cheap for a valuable lesson learned. I'm sure she won't forget it, ever, and will make an interesting story when she's in the old age home. :D

My middle daughter did the same, but head-butted our tenant's van that
back-butted that tenant's boat-trailer that dumped that tenant's driftboat
that dislodged that tenant's carport support post.

Car was fine other than a bunch of deep scratches on the front bumper. No damage.

My daughter refused to get her driver's license until she was 20 or 21.
glatt • Oct 13, 2015 8:45 am
She kept saying that she did it to our nice car.

Our Prizm looks like crap at this point with peeling clear coat. I'd prefer that she practice with that car except it's manual transmission and she's only got about an hour of driving under her belt at this point. I'm afraid throwing manual transmission into the mix would make things that much more complicated.

So when I learned to drive, I got sent to a driving school and learned on their cars, and then after I got the basics down, my parents taught me how to drive a stick shift VW bus. In Virginia, they don't want you to go to driver's ed until after you have logged 100 hours with your parents. That seems really stupid. What if the parents teach bad habits during those hundred hours? And then there's also the issue that the parents don't have an extra brake pedal on the passenger's side of their car. Plus, I'd rather somebody else's car get fucked up when the student invariably makes mistakes.

I'm really pleased that this was such a minor incident, and that nobody got hurt, and the car is still in pretty good shape. It could have been so much worse. The tow truck driver was whooping and hollering when he pulled the car out and walked around to look at it and saw no damage. He was proud of himself.

So this is the damage. There was a chain link fence in those bushes and the fence scratched it up.

Well, this is pretty Octoberish but not having looked at the thread since it started, I'm not really sure it's what y'all wanted.

Anyway, in for a penny, in for a pound.

xoxoxoBruce • Oct 13, 2015 11:39 am
Highlight it with pink nail polish, glatt, that'll put the fear o' god into oncoming traffic. :haha:

100 Hours? Yeah, that's stupid. I think my high school driver-ed course was, after ? hours of classroom, 12 hours of on the road, 4 driving and 8 back seat driving. But I guess it was a simpler time with less variations in traffic patterns.

It's beautiful - but the theme is "Unexpected".

I kept looking at the photo for the surprise.

The surprise is that I actually managed to take it without making a mess of it!

The photo that is, not the theme.

It's not what I expected, so it fits the unexpected theme pretty well. Beautiful photo.

Found this on my hike this evening. Pretty sure it is a fountain. Definitely unexpected.

I'll be participating but the pics are some distance from the computer. I hope I get them uploaded before the deadline.

yup. unexpected peanut
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 22, 2015 1:28 am
Is that a Spanish peanut, 'cause nobody expected the Spanish peanut. ;)
Was that down near your Dad's or up here? The wheels and tires look like it's not in retirement but active duty.

Nicely composed picture, Jim.

I like the angled shot of the peanut and the way it shows off the raking lighting that highlights the surface veins.
lumberjim • Oct 22, 2015 9:30 am
thanks, glatt

I took a ride up to New Hope yesterday with my good camera. Hoping to get some fall foliage shots, and maybe something unexpected. I was NOT expecting to see a Peanut truck. I'd have been less surprised to see the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile. And it did seem to be operational. They were setting up some tents in the field off to the left... so I guess there will be some event this weekend. It's about 2 miles south of New Hope proper, across the street from where George Washington crossed the Delaware...
glatt • Oct 22, 2015 10:20 am
I didn't even know there was a peanut truck.

I've seen the weinermobile (one of them anyway) and the LL Bean boot, but never even heard of the peanut truck.

This sentence is very close to describing a different, NSFW picture.

I almost went further in that direction, but stopped myself. I was gonna say pulsating or throbbing or something like that, but figured it was way too over the top.

I use the phrases "vein-laden" and "blood-engorged" whenever I can.

Leaves are changing here in the PDX

In our new-to-us neighborhood there are many new-to-me trees.
So far, I've found this one as an unexpected one-of-a-kind.
It was green all summer, but changed to this almost overnight.

Anyone recognize it or it's name ?
Spexxvet • Oct 25, 2015 5:06 pm
I didn't expect to see Flip Wilson's alter ego's name on a stained glass window in Ebenezer Baptist Church

All these pictures were great :)

Let me know if I should continue and create another thread for November. I don't know what theme they will have at work. Maybe we could decide on our own? Everyone makes a suggestion and the most popular one wins.
