January 30th, 2015: Look at the Red Hair, What a Fox.

NAG pointed out the National Park Service has some exiting news. They've had two, verifiable by trail cam, sightings in Yosemite Park, of a Sierra Nevada Red Fox.

Yosemite National Park is excited to report the first confirmed sighting in the park of a rare Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) in nearly 100 years. Park wildlife biologists had gone on a five-day backcountry trip to the far northern part of the park to check on previously deployed motion-sensitive cameras. They documented a sighting of the fox on two separate instances (December 13, 2014 and January 4, 2015) within the park boundary. The Sierra Nevada red fox of California is one of the rarest mammals in North America, likely consisting of fewer than 50 individuals.

A sly old fox! And great news.
I have a trail cam which I move to a new place around the ranch every night, never knowing what it will show the next morning.
Better than the tooth fairy!

We have foxes in our woods ... when they scream during mating season, it's the creepiest thing ever. The first time I ever heard and saw a fox screaming, I called the Game Commission thinking we had a rabid one. Nope; just declaring territory and impressing the vixens ...

An old timer around here told me that even crows won't eat fox.

No kidding, that's a new one on me. They usually don't have much meat on 'em, but crows will eat some pretty disgusting stuff. :haha:

Yeah. We get them on our block at times, and I hate that sound. That scream sounds like a woman being viciously assaulted. So creepy.

"What Does The Fox Say?" has no idea.

How do the know it is Vulpes vulpes necator and not Vulpes necator or Vulpes vulpes vulpes necator?:3_eyes:

Apparently you don't, and I certainly don't, so we have to rely on the Fox experts who are diametrically opposed to the FOX experts. ;)
