July 1st 2014. Tower Bridge 120th Anniversary.

Firstly, a note of apology to Dwellars who are less than enthralled by Victorian civil engineering.

I realise that this is the third topic concerning bridges that I have posted in the last few days but, like London buses, you wait ages for one then three turn up at once.

Perhaps you'll be kind enough to indulge me just once more.

London's iconic Tower Bridge is 120 years old. Here we take a look at some facts, figures and fabulous photographs from one of the capital's favourite landmarks.

It took eight years to build Tower Bridge. There were 432 construction workers were employed on the project.

Standing 293ft tall, its two main towers are giant steel frames clad in Portland stone and Cornish granite, in keeping with the neighbouring Tower of London

Seeing beautiful bridges like that one depresses me.

Because I live in the US, where we don't build beautiful things.

We build cheap things.

I think that you're being a bit harsh on yourselves there, Grav.

The Verrazano–Narrows and Golden Gate Bridges are spectacular engineering achievements.

I don't know whether I shall ever have the good fortune to visit the US again, but I have an ambition to drive across/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Well, I can dream.

I did it some time ago...it's wild. You're just driving along, enjoy the scenery...but a small part of you is tripping out, worried that the tunnel and/or bridge is going to go to hell.

Every now and then, Wolf and her friends decide to let me play on the Internet...

Cellar is like...hard to sum up simply. I love it, but I just can't keep up. Plus, there are times when I don't find it as enjoyable.

I've done that. It was pretty cool, although it probably would have been more cool in daylight.

I've done that once. Also driven the Golden Gate Bridge and the numerous bridges between Florida's Keys. Always beautiful and slightly scary. Love the pics of the London Bridge, Carruthers. No need to apologize!

I read somewhere the guy that bought London Bridge, and moved it to AZ, thought he was getting Tower Bridge. Big let down there.
