My Christmas Present...

...from the two Js was a pair of tickets, for me and J to go see Richard Herring's show, We're All Going to Die

The tickets have been sitting in my desk drawer since Christmas, and tonight's the night!

So looking forward to this:) It's become something of a tradition that J and I go see Herring when his tour hits Bradford or Leeds (and also Lee, when his tour comes nearby)

Last time we saw him in Bradford (his Christ on a Bike tour), I think was about two years ago, though may not be that long ago...can't recall now.

Anyways. very excited.

Have to say it's come at the right time. This month has been uber fucking stressful from start to finish. Been living on my teaching wage only (currently £186 per month) because the error with my pay in January led to all my in work benefits being halted and it's taken nigh on 5 weeks to get it sorted out. Finally got them reinstated today (hurrah!). Still a pittance to scrape by on, but at least it is better than the nightmare it's been.

Not fun when every day is spent fielding calls for overdue bills and you don't know when you'll have money for them. Aside from the 5 days when they cut my landline and internet off!

That was brilliant!

Trouble is, I only ever remember snippets and so much of it is about the build, that I'd wreck anything I tried to post here :p

I'd have to see it on DVD to recall in more detail.

I can tell you that he tackled the subject matter (that we are all going to die) brilliantly and I laughed til my cheeks hurt.

Sorry, I have been selfish in not responding, when you are always kind enough to encourage me in all my write-ups.
In truth I've been waiting for a chance to watch the Herring clips [in the stand up thread].
I do most of my Cellar reading and writing from my iPad these days (although longer posts, poetry and photos still require a trip to the spare room "real" computer").
I can't always assume I'll be able to view things from the iPad, and sometimes it's just that I've logged on in the middle of the night/ very early morning.

So I am genuinely sorry to have apparently given your thread such short shrift.
Promise you won't do the same when I go to see Ghost Stories?
You know it would kill me.

BTW - I am using up much of my spare room time in watching Dexter.
I'm just not feeling it, babe.
Now you'll say, "Oh the first series, well that's not really Dexter..."
But if I'm going to get to the parts everyone else loves I have to put in the time, right?
It's just such a bloody (ha) looooong series

SO, what did you wear to see M Herring?
What did you eat?
How did you get there and back?
What were your seats like, and the venue?

Re: Dexter - if you aren't feeling it on series one then it ain't for you imo. That was the best series. There were some good ones after it, but that was the best.

For the Herring concert I wore .....*drum roll* ....jeans and a top...not grey though, maroon.

We ate...at McDs. Because it was my choice where we ate (my present :p) and you know what I am like for fast food.

Went in J's car. Bless him, he's a bit of a nervy driver nowadays, after his most recent crash last year. I try not to let it show how nervous I am as a passenger! Doubt that would help any lol.

Seats were in the stalls. But it's such a small and lovely place, that still had us fairly near the stage.

You'd love the place. City Varieties Music Hall. Old place, been restored to former glory.

Built in 1865 above the White Swan public house in Swan Street Leeds. Most famous for hosting BBC's The Good Old Days for 30 years.

You have to go down a little side street to get to it. Looks like you're going off to a back alley, then turns into this delightful little studenty/artsy spot. Reminded me a bit of London. Inside it's all red plush velvet and gilt decor. Very much a traditional music hall.

There's a little display case showing all the little things they found during the restoration - old chocolate wrappers, and ice cream carton lids (the round ones with the little pull up tab - one of them was called Gay Times Icecream). Some old cigarette packets from the 30s and 40s. A pair of glasses. Really interesting little collection. I recognised the 70s style Milky Way! Oh yes.

That's the sort of place Brianna and I would have had our One Woman Show tour. An idea we discussed when we talked about how to cash in on the success of our book. I named it of course.
And from what I remember of Leeds it would have been right up her alley too.

And yeah for McDs if that's what you want. It's like us having a hotdog at the panto. Some things that are pedestrian to other people become significant when they're part of your personal celebration.

I saw Punt & Dennis at the Alhambra in Bradford, with Peter (Sowerby Bridge Peter now, Bradford Uni student Peter then). Goodness knows how I got the tickets in pre-Internet days. Maybe he walked in and and bought them and I paid him back - I had money but no plastic, he had plastic but no money.

Also saw Christopher Eccleston in the film Let Him Have It, in Bradford.
Little did I know that one day I would revere him... As Dougal Siepp ;)

Anyway , glad you and your daring maroon top had a good night out.
If'n I do make it to your part of the world, when we are both solvent (one day, one day) then we'll have an equally good night out too.
Otherwise we'll wait for January 2015.
