Dr. William Podlich took a leave of absence from his job at Arizona State to work with UNESCO in Afghanistan. Here are some photos from his time there before the wars.

It really looks like a country on the brink of modernity, but we all know how it turned out.

Fortunately, they were able to shed the western trappings of societal stratification, sanitation, education, and medication.
