Snowmaggeddon Looms upon Us, Yet Again.
French Toast ingredients in hand, but once again, unlike the rest of you slackers I will be heading off to work so the junkies have a warm place to sleep and three squares.
The original 1 to 5 was upgraded to 4 to 6 and on the way home I heard 10 to 12.
12 inches? We are on the edge of 1-2FEET!! :3_eyes:
Fucking hotmageddon here again. I see a strange correllation!
for Pete's sake don't tell footfootfoot otherwise you'll still be digging yourselves out in April.
here in UK it's Abitcoolmageddon with odd misty periods.
(Famous last words,) "but we've had no snow yet this winter".
(that's buggered it, works a treat every time, get ready for a whiteout Britain!
Looks like it's passing South. :sniff:
The original 1 to 5 was upgraded to 4 to 6 and on the way home I heard 10 to 12.
With a high of 35, followed by highs of 15, 18, 15, 29, 26, and 24 for the next 6 days.
I was taking the day off for a 10:30 eye appointment, and now my office is closed, so I don't have to use leave. Sweet!
Of course, I don't know if the Docs office will be open, and I'm out of lenses!
They cancelled the first of 4 grief counseling sessions I was to attend today. It's too cold to grieve (my mom would've chuckled at that.)
Snow and high winds. Someone told me this fall that farmer's almanac said it was going to be a rough winter. I've never paid attention to FA accuracy, but they got this winter right.
spring spring spring spring spring spring
Snow piling up here and M'town is shutting down. They don't send out the plows until after it stops snowing ... :smack:
Ah well, time to do some work at home. I'm not complaining!
You can see where it's getting bad by the traffic maps.

So fucking glad I only live 2.4 miles from work now.
Where's your spirit of adventure, Jim?
oh, i LOVE driving in the snow. I really do. in my JEEP. ...but the dickholes in Hondas (like tw) in front of me really piss me off. I remember last time I left here in a big snow storm, it took me 3.5 hours to get home. I am at work right now. we closed 2 hours ago, and everyone else left. I stayed to bill deals. I'm going to leave here in a few minutes. the 8 minute ride will probably take me 20. and traffic has lessened significantly since the afternoon hours.
HA HA, just an hour ago the TV drones were interviewing people who'd been traveling awhile. Half were bitching about the crazy people going more than 25, risking life and limb of the entire western world.
The other half were bitching about the assholes who were clogging traffic and wouldn't allow anyone to maintain momentum. :lol2:
Ugh, storm-triggered migraine coming on. So much for a cozy, productive evening. :(
I made it to the eye doc and out again before there was more than an inch or so on the ground. Traffic was heavy then but no cars are driving past our house now.
Feeling a little cooped up now, but I went for a 3 mile walk this morning before it all hit, so it could be worse.
15 minute commute took a hour and a half. Norton in a pickup truck ahead of me kept trying to drive sideways.
Oh those winter wonderland stunt drivers, always showing off.
According to the National Weather Service, I won.

Moron, not Norton. The updated predictive text doesn't predict me well yet.
Thank you, apartment complex, for not plowing anything, especially the empty upper parking lot where I am now parked on ten inches of Virgin snow. Probably more, as my undercarriage did not clear it.
I liked Norton better. Norton sounds like every typical idiot you've ever known.
I like Norton as well. -10F and no new snow here. Quit hoarding!
Norton thirded. One more and we have a quorum.
Armageddon tired of the degree deficit. We are -4 right now. No snow to speak of.
Hey farto.
"norton my watch"
(fnarr-fnarr)
Looks like Gov. Christie has found a way to close ALL the roads in NJ.
:D
I like Norton as well. -10F and no new snow here. Quit hoarding!
Well I've got, according to the National Weather Service, 14.8 inches of snow, so get your snow off my lawn, ya whippersnapper. :crone:
Why are they asking the train spotters?
trainED spotters... proven underwear soilers.

When I was little, my mom called every bad driver "Manuel." It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized she was being racist.
Are people from
Barcelona bad drivers?
I don't know, we don't get a lot of illegal day-laborers from Spain around here.
While living in San Antonio, I found it hilarious that the city was paralyzed with even major highways being closed after just a couple inches of snowfall. Having learned to drive in the upper Midwest, I had traveled in worse conditions on motorcycle.

are you sure she wasn't just assuming their driving was bad because they had to change gear with the stick?

I saw that in Charlotte, NC, too. Less than 1.5 inches and all the resources in the county were busy trying to keep I-95 moving, so the rest of the roads weren't plowed and sanded which caused everyone to stay home. I was scratching my head as to why they would plow 1.5 inches.
We were working at a plant that employed maybe 250 people, and when we got there(in our rentals with regular tires), it was us and a handful of managers. Now granted, there were probably some helping the old lady next door, taking care of business, or just sledding with the kids. But talking to them later, quite a few admitted snow scared them.
are you sure she wasn't just assuming their driving was bad because they had to change gear with the stick?
When it's a stick shift, you don't pronounce it "mon-well." :)
Oh, goody. More snow this weekend.
I shall be in a mountain cabin this weekend. Fireplace, warm and toasty, good food, no TV, with books and games. Might do some gun shootin' (not AT any live things) and some hiking.
Not a romantic getaway, going to my brother and sissy law's nice cabin in southern Ohio. So, they're really more hills than mountains. When does a hill become a mountain? 'Cause they're some big ass hills.
That's awesome. Have fun.
I know of a mountain that's about 112 feet tall. It's all in the name. You name it a mountain, and then it's a mountain.
And I'm driving in it.
Outside Allentown right now, heading into Bayonne for a 0530 appt, then off to Moosic to pick up a load from a driver who is too scared to move, let alone drive to Louisville, KY.
Sigh.
I thought you were done truck driving?
I was actually thinking about you last weekend when we did a quick trip up to Scranton and back the next day. More driving than I normally do, and the weather was bad too, but just another day for a trucker.
It's all about the infrastructure. Places that get tons of snow regularly are prepared for it. When I lived in mid-northern Ontario, we had 12" snowfalls overnight constantly. It didn't matter, because the region had snowplows and salt ready 24/7, working 24/7. Everyone put snow tires on in the fall and everyone had chains they could ADD to the snow tires. Nothing ever closed.
But consider a location that has mild winters and gets snow maybe once in twenty years. There's no economic justification to keep snowplows and salt and sand on call 24/7/365. An inch or two of snow will bring these places to a standstill, but it's not their fault. People in these places don't buy snow tires at $900/season; why would they? So everything closes with minimal snowfall.
Live and let live. I'm happy when, if I'm living in a place that doesn't get much snow and it snows, people are cautious and places close easily. That's safe. I get scared when people who have no idea how to drive in snow attempt to race to work at 80 mph with summer tires.
It seems it doesn't take long to lose snow driving skills, one or two winters without much snow and poof, they're gone.
Yeah. My skills are pretty weak these days. I used to stay home when it snowed only because I fear the other drivers here. Now I'm self aware enough to know I'm nothing special myself. Still better than most here, but a shell of my former Maine self.
Well you people have allowed some snow to leak down on us, dammit. As much as a whole half-inch in some places, patchy grass showing through everywhere.
Still enough to close the schools.
I thought you were done truck driving?

I thought so too. I was about to become an EMT when the wife fucked up my life. Now, I am back where I was. Sigh.

Definitely regional differences.
Are those trucks huddling to stay warm?
Note that in Austin a mere dusting of powder is enough to make everyone stay home and the city to shut down. Look at it! Not a soul to be seen! Meanwhile in Michigan, it's business as usual.
Sorry, I had to do it....... Somebody has to live in paradise.......
JR
Definitely regional differences.
The January 2014 snow storm in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Roads jammed and schools open.
Are those trucks huddling to stay warm?
Naaaaaw. The truck drivers heard that schools were open and thought they were a substitute for convoys!
When I was little, my mom called every bad driver "Manuel." It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized she was being racist.
Maybe she that was just her verbal shorthand for 'read the fucking manual'.
Sorry, I had to do it....... Somebody has to live in paradise.......
Tell me about your paradise next summer, when you need an umbrella and a jug of water just to cross the parking lot. :p:
Maybe she that was just her verbal shorthand for 'read the fucking manual'.
Your Spanish pronunciation would be a source of great entertainment down here. Protip: Jesus doesn't start with a hard J, either. :)
Meanwhile, in bipolar Austin weather:
Friday night - snow, city shuts down, schools close
Sunday afternoon - high 70s, t-shirt weather
Monday night - mid 20s, no moisture otherwise it might have snowed again
The Frost Giants came for another visit yesterday.
Pretty hard to survive a semi truck crushing :( That was in my area :thepain:
on to some comic relief before the -15 shit coming next week

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
White here now
UNCLE!

Ann Arbor officially has the snowiest January on record. And that was 3pm yesterday, we've had a few more inches this morning and more to come....
We've had numerous inches this weekend. No plows. Tomorrow morning rush hour will be nasty.
Love my Blizzaks. ;)
As I go out to my car tonight, my immediate thought is, "Hey, it seems warmer ..." it is. 30°. Spring must be on the way.
Tell that to the wiener mobile!

Yeah, 38 tomorrow which will be the first time above freezing since last Monday, and the last time above freezing until at least Friday. Brrrr.
Somebody posted a scary weather map on the fb and made reference to a really bad storm year of the past. If course it's on the fb and so I'm not getting overexcited just yet.
Just follow these folks. Eastern PA Weather Authority
https://www.facebook.com/easternpaweatherauthorityIt appears to be 50 degrees outside my building right now. I should go for a walk. Temperature is supposed to drop 30 degrees this afternoon.
It would be great if this lingering snow and ice could all melt first.
So we had another none or so inches, an ice storm of epic proportions, and are still dealing with the aftermath of clearing downed trees and getting power restored. So I'm staffing rumor control
Of for the love of Pete ... it fucking snowed again. Cow Orker calls from a gas station a mile and a half away crying "I can't get up the hill. Well, I won't be able to get up the hill. Somebody come get me." Nobody available to get her. Gave her better routing instructions. At least she listened, unlike the idiot yesterday (patient) who was coming from Jersey, took the wrong bridge and ended up in Wilmington. He never made it. He either is still wandering around or decided to give up and go home.
I moved south (NC) to get away from this stuff (mostly) but good gravy - we're gearing up for our 3rd measurable snow this year. (Maybe I should just run away to Disney world!)
Sorry, Orlando got snow too, albeit less than you did.
I've been driving up and down the east coast in it. Ya bunch of pansies!
Put snow tires on yer cars, slow the heck down and stop trying to play NASCAR on the highway. That's the ticket right there!
I drive by any number of wrecks/spinouts/rollovers from people who fail to do those few simple things. Sheesh.
18 inches short of the snowiest winter of all time here. But it might almost reach freezing next Monday.
Another foot of snow coming in and some models have another round of ice... I'm exhausted.
O I already said that on the other thread. That's how exhausted I am

You people in the Midwest are setting... Uh, make that enduring, all kinds of records this winter.:(

The storms are a pain in the ass, but the 1 or 2 inches of snow every day or every other day, is really wearing.
Yeah, 38 tomorrow
Damn, I missed it - happy 38th birthday! :p:
So what, you missed all the others too.

Don't you stick your tongue out at me. Valentines Day is coming you know.
:p:
The big story here is rain. Rain and wind.
Early mornings are a problem for drivers because of black ice. When everywhere is snow and ice people drive carefully. But that hidden slick that suddenly takes the wheels is a killer.
Mainly though it's rain. And wind.
Not so terrible up here in the northern hills, but the poor buggers down south and on the coast are having a very rough time.
Oh, quit complaining. This is how droughts end!
The snow and ice is crucial (esp in the mountains) for refilling rivers and aquifers. This has been badly needed for a decade or more. I look forward to FINALLY burning my burn pile, which has reached massive proportions by now.
I feel justified in my Whinging.... Ann Arbor is currently the 6th snowiest city in the entire country for 2014

Bugger that. We're having our wettest year in two and a half centuries and swathes of the south are under water.
the first person to say "hosepipe ban" gets a paddling.
You said it just now! Let me just get my paddle
Isn't everybody there paddling? We will be next week when all this starts to melt
Oh goody. More snow from a completely separate storm tomorrow and Saturday.
I would like to thank New Holland and Sno-King for the assist this morning. Now I need to eat and sleep though trainings all day.
My back is still achy from yesterday. I don't know about you guys, but we had about 8 inches of snow and then it turned to a constant drizzle, making the snow extremely heavy. I did our driveway and also the driveway of the little old lady next to us. If we had this every year, I'd definitely go out and buy a snow blower.
Isn't everybody there paddling? We will be next week when all this starts to melt
Oh yes, lots of paddling.
Was slightly miffed by Cameron and his 'money no object' promise in regards to the flood victims down south.
There was no such blank cheque for the residents of Hebden Bridge and the rest of the Calder Valley when they were waist deep in water. Many of them only just getting straight when the next lot of floods hit. Lots of businesses suffered, some had to close down in the end, they lost so much. There wasn't any waiver of business tax for them.
Of course...to an extent his are empty promises. Because they're still planning on cutting 500+ jobs from the river and flooding agencies. Maybe if they'd employed a little foresight and not cut back on anti-flood measures and dredging then the Thames area at least would be ok. And maybe if we stopped building on the flood plains things would be a whole lot better.
Was slightly miffed by Cameron and his 'money no object' promise in regards to the flood victims down south.
This, and the image above, are offered without further comment.
I for one embrace our new god Ullr. Broke some awesome trail the last two days. Benny is tired, letting the snow balls melt by standing next to me.
Looks like y'all got all our snow, GOOD!!!
We're cool with that... as long as I get the parts I need for my snow-blower.
Parking is limited though.
Looking nice there, and that trail looks inviting.
It's above freezing today and was sunny, so we're melting. The roads are finally in good shape today. Still have significant snowplow created hills blocking all the parking spots on the streets, but if you have a driveway like we do, you're all set. (If a little sore still from shoveling.)
The white snow on the black snowbanks this morning was prettier..... but it can stop now mmmmkay? We're all out of icemelt and the stores don't have any ....three flakes is enough to make it slippy all over again.... and the melt/freeze fun is about to begin/continue as the temperatures hover around freezing for the next week. I predict icicle wars in my yard (It's school break) :)
...I wonder if we can find away to illuminate them like light sabers.....
try rock salt for water softeners. It will kill the lawn but you won't have ice.
HFS they underestimated this one.
Pam -they're out of salt for softeners, pools, fishtanks and also any cat lit that will have any grip! I'mm'a start using crumbled own-brand Goldfish snacks and other such items. Coming this spring, I will be asking for help with my Rat Roach and (R)ant problems......
;)
Hoping we at least get a snowfall record out of this crap....
If we'd known, we could all have ordered Blizzaks and plenty of sand. As it is, it should be a record winter.
Coming from the Great White North, my thoughts are: TIRES. SNOW TIRES. All else pales in comparison, except for true 4-wheel drive. That will let you get going, but you need your tires (and the ability to gear WAY down) to stop.
Yeah, I had good snows for my Nissan pickup and it was a goer in the deep stuff. My Toyota needs some upgrades, tires being number 1.
Okay, so like, you people who live in the north, explain this snow tire thing to me.
You have a second set of tires that you keep in your garage for the winter? And twice a year you load them in your trunk, and take your car to the mechanic to switch them out? And what about snow chains? Do you put those on snow tires, or regular tires? And why not just leave the snow tires on all year, if they're so much better?
Also, do you have "storm windows?" What are those, exactly?
If you own a second set of wheels, you can keep the snow tires on the spare wheels and just do the switching yourself. Otherwise you drive them to a mechanic and pay like $75 for each season's switch and balancing. Fall and Spring. And you have to store them somewhere, like in your garage. Snow tires have deep tread and are designed for the snow. They don't perform as well as summer or year round tires on the dry pavement, and the tread wears down quickly, so you would be wasting money to keep them on year round.
I've always viewed chains as emergency equipment, to pull out if you are getting stuck during a snowstorm. They are frowned upon in many locations because they chew up the road.
All this is based on childhood memories, so others may have better input.
you don't use snow chains on regular roads. You get crappy gas mileage on snow tires. Some places will store snow tires for you. We just use all season tires all year, but we live in a city and hope that we only drive on bad snow a few days of the year. I carry a snow shovel.
We just use all season tires all year, but we live in a city and hope that we only drive on bad snow a few days of the year.
After running over 100,000 miles on original Michelins, I first tried two all weather tires. Figuring I may sell that car before these tires wore out. However, handling (especally in rain) was seriously inferior with those all weather tires. But they were not Michelin - which might explain the bad handling.
Also interesting was less vibration with Michelins (a tiny shake in the steering wheel). Some tires have minor variations in belts that cause a tiny shake or shimmy only at highest speed.
In early days, I would buy two rims to leave snow tires mounted on. So that I could mount snow tires without remounting and balancing tires. I made a mistake one day. While rolling both tires to the garage, one got away. Once a rim mounted tire starts rolling, it cannot be stopped. I kept kicking it to knock it over. Due to momentum created by a steel rim, that tire would not fall over and stop. Eventually the tire was going faster than I could run. Fortunately it hit a tire, climbed up the trunk about ten feet, and bounce back at me. Then I could kick it over.
Nice..
