Chanukkah

Big Sarge • Nov 29, 2013 12:38 am
It was only me tonight, but tomorrow night my family will join. I'm trying hard to become more observant and pass on tradition to my kids

Lighting the Candles

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

asher kidishanu b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu
Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us

l'had'lik neir shel Chanukah. (Amein)
to light the lights of Chanukkah. (Amen)

Blessing for the Chanukkah Miracle

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

she'asah nisim la'avoteinu bayamim haheim baziman hazeh. (Amein)
Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time

Shehecheyanu (Who Has Kept Us Alive)

This blessing is recited only on the first night of Chanukkah.

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

shehecheyanu v'kiyimanu v'higi'anu laz'man hazeh. (Amein)
who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season (Amen)

Chag Sameach, Sarge.:f94:

Sorry, but no menorah smiley.

We had friends over last night for potato latkes, turkey and matzo ball soup. My amazing wife did a great job. It seemed that for two holidays she had to work twice as hard,

Thank you.

Sarge, I was in my hebrew school choir and I remember singing Ma'oz Tzur. Your transliterations reminded me.

Thanks Rich. It's hard trying to learn by studying on the internet and what I learned during my conversion when I was in the Wounded Warrior Program. My family was originally Jewish but the last of them have past on and I'm determined to bring us back to our heritage.

Wishing you and yours a very blessed holiday, Sarge. Getting back to our heritage lets us appreciate the lives of those who lived before us, their griefs and their hopes. It's a worthwhile undertaking. Happy Chanukkah!

We used to hunt chanukkas up in the mountains when I was a kid.

But, then one got ahold of Uncle Willie...and that was the end of that.
