[FONT="Arial"][SIZE="4"]The “catacomb saints,” complete skeletons of alleged martyrs, were revered holy objects considered by 16th- and 17th-century Catholics as local protectors and personifications of the glory of the afterlife. It is believed that the Vatican sent at least 2,000 skeletons to churches in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where Martin Luther began the Protestant movement.[/SIZE]
