Mount Etna, in Italy, used to blow smoke rings, which is apparently an extremely rare occurrence for volcanoes. So far, only three have been documented: Two from Etna in 1970 and 2000, and another from Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland, in May 2010.

A slight detour on smoke rings...

This IOD brought up a vivid memory I have of a billboard that blew smokerings.

The strange thing for me is that my memory is of me
as a very little kid walking hand-in-hand with my parents,
and being dragged along because I was fascinated by the smoke rings coming from this sign.

Since I grew up in L.A., I searched Google images and am somewhat
dismayed that the only image of such a billboard was from NY City !
Now, I do remember we once made a trip to NY to visit relatives,
but I would have sworn that Camel's sign was in Los Angeles.

Here is a day-light pic, but the smoke rings are not as well shown.

Memory is a lousy fact-finder.

Now, returning you to today's IOD and Mt Etna...

I too remember a sign board that blew smoke rings in LA, most likely in the '50's. I didn't make it to New York until years later, so I don't have that to mix me up.
I'm thinking Sunset Blvd.
