Happy Fathers Day all!

Griff • Jun 16, 2013 8:31 am
Went to see Book of Mormon in Buffalo with the girls yesterday. Very funny show and really not that mean to the Mormons. Hipster kids were wearing ironic Mormon gear and Mormons were out front handing out tracts. We stopped at Duff's for the hot wings on the way home. Excellent wings, very saucy and med hot was ideal as you could still taste the chicken. A kid next to us ordered the suicide and ran to the bathroom after about 4. Anyway good times.

Happy Father's Day, Cellar dads!
BigV • Jun 16, 2013 12:53 pm
Happy Father's Day Griff. You have a lot to be proud of. I hope that beautiful house you built has lots of wall space for the avalanche of awards to come, formal and otherwise.

Happy Father's Day classicman. Your kids have a lot to be proud of. Goddammit, you kick so much ass as Dad, you bring a tear to *my* eye. PKA indeed.

Happy Father's Day footfootfoot. Spouse is a contract gig, but being a dad is a lifelong commitment, and you've got them both in the right perspective.

Happy Father's Day glatt. You're such a natural, gifted dad. Patient, involved, perceptive, active, smart. And most importantly, present.

Happy Father's Day lookout123. You have a handful there with your sons, but they are in good hands, truly.

Happy Father's Day Beest. I don't want to take anything away from the accomplishments of your kids, but you are clearly doing something (probably lots of somethings) right. See you on ESPN!

Happy Father's Day xoxoxoBruce, I don't know if you have kids or not, but I bet there's a line of kids wanting you to be their uncle.

Happy Father's Day TheMercenary. We have style differences in addition to our political differences but it's clear you love your kids--on that we agree.

Happy Father's Day jimhelm, you're a cool dad. Your kids know it, you know it, we know it; we're all cool with it. Right on, dad.

Happy Father's Day Elspode. By the standards of mere mortals, you've gone above and beyond. By your standards, just another day at the dad office. Nice work dad.

Happy Father's Day Pete Zicato. Zings! And I bet they do. You're a blessing to them and I'm sure they know it. I hope you know it too.

Happy Father's Day Lamplighter. Congratulations on successful dad-ing on successive generations. You've got staying power, I'll grant you that.

Happy Father's Day Kitsune, leading candidate for most blissed-out dad, when not sleep deprived. Babies are so cute!!

Happy Father's Day Big Sarge. Devoted, selfless, unconditionally-loving, relentless and resolute. You might be enlisted in the service, but you're a five star general as a dad.

Happy Father's Day chrisinhouston. We've heard the phrase "the camera loves you", but in your case, it's clear the camera is just focusing your love for your family, and lots of it.

Happy Father's Day Flint. Music, technology, intelligence and wit make a powerful mix; your kiddos? Blow their minds, don't blow them up. ps please don't be stony-faced at being listed "last", think of it more like bedrock on which the post is made.

Back at'cha, dawg. Makin' your list as a P. S. would still be an honour.

I mean, this is a list of living legends. I blush at even being included with these juggernauts of fatherhood. I'm just a hack!
orthodoc • Jun 16, 2013 11:23 pm
Flint, you just have to take 'juggernaut of fatherhood' as your user name. For at least a week.
Flint • Jun 16, 2013 11:32 pm
Sorry, I'm just Flint. My fictional action-hero, comic book character /slash/ porn star name is right there on the FDA % of daily allowances label.
lumberjim • Jun 17, 2013 12:39 am
Thanks big V. Your son is Pretty damn lucky himself. You're like the cool older brother and the unexpectedly hip father rolled into one.

I hope you had a wonderful Father's Day with your manchild.

Rock on
Sundae • Jun 17, 2013 4:02 am
Sarge was away representing the good old US of A on Father's Day.
Not representing good old Fathers. And not by choice.

Addie's Mom contacted him at Camp Shelby for money for Addie to go to Princess Camp.
I thin she has a very different idea of what Princesses go through then the reality. Scrutiny? Negative press? Media obsession with every lb you gain or lose? Difficulty meeting a man who will be able to deal with the fact that you have the money and the intense media gaze and therefore you and your family have to wear the trousers?

Anyway.
Bear in mind Addie isn't allowed to call Sarge "Dad" any more as it complicates things in Mum's new life.
Okay, I only hear one side of it. But the side I hear is very sad.
And Sarge is tenacious. He's not given up on a child yet. Which is right and proper, but not always the way things work out when parents split.
Griff • Jun 17, 2013 6:31 am
It may be one side of the story but Sarge is our guy and Addie's mom comes off as a cruel user.

Unless it is an out-and-out lie, there is no "side" to this. It is wrong, no matter what the circumstances might be. It'll backfire on her anyway. This kind of stuff always does.

So what did everyone get for Father's Day? I went ahead and ordered the FitBit Flex for him after getting his approval, but it's backordered and won't be here for another month at least.
footfootfoot • Jun 17, 2013 1:20 pm
Wait. We were supposed to get something?
glatt • Jun 17, 2013 1:55 pm
I went to a boy scout ceremony the day before Fathers Day, where my boy was advancing two ranks, so it was cool seeing that, but they had extra fleece pullovers from a year or two ago for sale cheap. I got one of those for a Fathers Day gift. It's really nice, even if I won't be wearing it until the fall. It's the really thick nubby fleece, with the embroidered troop patch on the breast. Land's End. Nice quality. $35.

I went to a paint your own pottery place and made Kitsune a picture frame. It says "I (heart made of our daughter's footprints) Daddy," with her name and "Father's Day 2013 on it." The heart came out a bit wonky since she's old enough that her feet have proper arches, but it was still cute.

We also had a special breakfast -- French toast with fresh mixed berries and a mascarpone cream. Yum.
Sundae • Jun 17, 2013 2:20 pm
Choco, wonky is special.
And what Daddy loves in years to come. Unless Daddy is an interior designer (never got that vibe from the Kit)

My poor old Dad just had a card. I think I posted it in the Happy thread.
But he gave me a kiss.
I'm close to two UK Dwellars who no longer have a father. I appreciate how lucky I am to have mine every May and June now.
Lamplighter • Jun 17, 2013 3:23 pm
So what did everyone get for Father's Day?

I got to paint the living room and dining room ceilings and walls.

Oh yes, I also got calls from my 3 daughters, and a smile from my Lab, Vicky.
My wife made us Ruben sandwiches for lunch, with cold bottles of Black Butte Porter.
And then after my shower, we a great pot roast dinner by candle light on the front porch.
Given the chaos of the whole house being torn apart, these were spectacular efforts on her part.

Today, Father's Day +1, I get to paint the woodwork.
Big Sarge • Jun 17, 2013 3:25 pm
Big V - Thanks for remembering me

Sundae - It is so sweet of you to defend me.
BigV • Jun 17, 2013 4:24 pm
Yes, sir, Sarge. Don't you forget it.
BigV • Jun 17, 2013 4:46 pm
I thank you all for your kind words, and your well wishes. Fatherhood ... is probably my greatest calling in my life. So far, in the immortal words of Homer Simpson, so far. Of course I know I'm Father for Life, so, I don't expect to "retire" from that service, but I wouldn't mind a promotion to Emeritus status, and the ceremonial schedule it implies.

*sigh*

I love my children more than anything else I can think of.

My role as father of adult children now comprises a different set of actions than before, though my instincts are still tuned to "back in the day". It's an adjustment for me; and for them. I'd like to give an update with greater detail, perhaps in another thread, so for now I will close by saying that the other fathers on this list (and those that I omitted out of ignorance but not malice) are brothers in arms to me. If I may quote and extend my favorite author, Robert A. Heinlein:

Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation.

So is being a father.

In fifty years, I've seen no compelling reason to change my attitude.
Sundae • Jun 18, 2013 5:05 am
50?!
Wow, you're wearing well, your pics don't show it.

Then again, I forget I'm 41 this year.
And knocking on Death's door. Always early, that's me.

Sarge I'll always take your part when you're right.
And no matter how we differ politically I've always admired and respected your commitment to your children. You are a good man and a good father and never forget it.

This is the first year that Gary's sons actually did something for him without being reminded or prodded. I was very proud of them and so happy for him.

Happy Father's Day to all my friends who are Fathers. Having found this thread at the end of the day, when I'm tired from work, instead of the beginning of the day when I got up early to take a picture of the solstice sunrise means tha' I'm less eloquent and more emotional.

I've reread this short thread, and there isn't one word I'd take back. All the fathers here deserve a hearty cheer for their *necessary* contribution (well beyond their gametes) as the loving parent every child needs. I salute you all!

My father's day was quiet. I was pleasantly surprised by a card from Twil's children. They give a shit; I am grateful. I did get a couple texts from a couple children of mine...and later, I'll be attending Compline with my baby sister.

I hope Father's Day was sweetly satisfying for all my friends!
glatt • Jun 22, 2015 12:01 pm
My Father's day was good. This year it was also my daughter's 16th birthday, but she's off on a mountain ridge somewhere in Virgina in a wilderness hiking camp program.

Woke up in a tent, came home, dried out my wet gear, showered, opened cards and got a gift hammock, had lunch made for me, went to the church to help dry out the scout gear after their Sunday services, took a nap, mowed the lawn, showered again, had a few glasses of wine and some cheese and crackers, a delicious grilled meal, put away dry camping gear, bought a new mattress for our bed online, went to bed.

A good Father's day.
Clodfobble • Jun 22, 2015 1:50 pm
How solidly productive! Weirdly enough, we were also celebrating my stepdaughter's 17th birthday, although the real thing isn't until Wednesday.
