Is that smell the stench of Republican hypocrisy,
or just the stink of mean spirits ?

Well, there's the base notes and then there's the overtones.

There's a homology between those two articles and the current thing going on
between Obama and the House Republicans' proposal on student loan rates...

When an interest rate goes over 10%, it essentially means
the loans cannot be paid off by the general borrower.

The House measure would allow the Stafford rate for undergraduates
to reset each year based on the cost of a 10-year Treasury note, plus 2.5 percent,
but it would ultimately cap the rate at 8.5 percent.

For graduate student loans, known as PLUS loans, the rate would be
the Treasury note plus 4.5 percent, capped at 10.5 percent.

Food stamps would be a good thing if they didn't give most of them to people of the wrong color, that speak with funny accents, and don't go to my church.

This is america in the 21st century, son. You need to change your color, learn their language, and start going to their church. Do you want a visit from the Political Corrections officer?

During debate on the farm bill in the House Agriculture Committee last week, Mr. Fincher was one of the biggest proponents of $20 billion in cuts to food stamps in the legislation. At times he quoted passages from the Bible in defending the cuts.

Every time something like this comes up and someone quotes the bible, I keep on thinking to myself "Are we talking about the same bible"?

I know that there are many translations of the Bible. But while words can differ slightly, the overall context doesn't change. I keep wondering if there is some King Asshole version that I am not aware of.

I thought the same thing when I read about the trial judges opinion in the case leading to Loving v Virginia.

The Lovings were charged under Section 20-58 of the Virginia Code, which prohibited interracial couples from being married out of state and then returning to Virginia, and Section 20-59, which classified miscegenation as a felony, punishable by a prison sentence of between one and five years. The trial judge in the case, Leon M. Bazile, echoing Johann Friedrich Blumenbach's 18th-century interpretation of race:
“ Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.
