I've been told you don't see them in people's homes because they are hard to house break. But maybe that's just the really cool ones, and the ones that look like more normal flowers are around, but we don't realize they're Orchids..

The reason orchids are so weird is that the genes which control the development of the flower are all on a single section of the DNA (just one chromosome, IIRC) which doesn't do anything else. This means random changes to the flower can take place without messing up stuff like the plant's biochemistry and overall structure.
