I only heard about the story when it became clear that the death of his girlfriend was not true, not true in many ways. I haven't heard much more beyond that, including the story you linked to. What did he do that you think was wrong? I haven't heard anything in that area.
A reporter here interviewed him and his parents. Manti Te'o claims now he never met her then why do his parents say he did meet her and they met her and his brother said the same thing? The parents are on tape saying this. Because it was all a hoax to get him publicity and sympathy for the Heisman and other awards and a higher place in the draft? Seriously a football player that does not ever meet his girlfriend? Really then he must be a master baiter!

Come on, this story's not that hard to ferret out. Dude's just gay, is all. He's in a relationship with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo (third guy in the slideshow in Nirvana's link,) who created a fake social media account with a girl's picture on it so that they could interact without word getting out.
When it becomes clear that his family plans to meet her, he knows he has to get rid of "her" somehow--but he knows he's not a good enough actor to fake crying at her supposed sudden death. But then--stroke of luck!--his grandma dies, and he realizes he can make those tears do double-duty, so he claims the girlfriend also died within 6 hours of his grandma dying.
It's all about poorly hiding the fact that he's gay from his family. Nothing to do with sports or fans or anything more sinister.
Exactly as I think CF except local reporter has the family claiming on tape/ film that they met this fake girlfriend. I think he was trying to closet himself from the great catholic ND and any draft chances that may include homo phobics. The press conference with Swarbrick ND athletic director, was bizarre to say the least so I really think the University knows now but has to have a spin Dr and he was most uncomfortable in that position.
