Must-see Movie Trailers

BigV • Dec 17, 2012 7:37 pm
We watch a lot of movies. We stream them, we rent them, we buy them, watch them at the theater. There are *lots* of movies out there, more than I can keep track of. When we go to the theater, we like to watch the trailers at the start of the movie. At the end of each trailer we put our , :thumbsdn: or thumbsneutral (horizontal). It's fun! But sometimes I lose track of good looking movies because the promotions and the buzz fade away. I'm sure some of these lost movies were good, entertaining movies, but they're crowded out and forgotten. I used to make a list of "man, that looks like a great movie. I better look for it when it comes out on xyz" because not every movie can be or needs to be seen on the big screen (not on my budget anyhow). Those lists seem to have gotten lost too. :(

So, I'm starting a new list. Here is where I'm going to post trailers of movies that look exciting or interesting. Movies I want to see and don't want to forget about.

Cloud Atlas.

WOW. This looks *huge*. This is definitely one I want to see on the big screen.

Looper.

Heh, heard on the radio today an existential question, is Die Hard a classic holiday film or not. Good question. But regardless of the season, this one looks like some tasty Bruce Willis fare.

Unstoppable.

Disclaimer: I am not completely objective when it comes to Denzel Washington movies. I try not to let my crush affect my judgment, but how could I know? Better question, who cares? I don't think I've ever been disappointed in any of his performances.

Moving on... this movie...how appropriate. It looks positively kinetic. I haven't seen this one in the movies and it doesn't seem to be available (yet) through my normal sources. But I'm patient. :)

The make-up on Joseph Gordon-Levitt looked great in the Looper trailer! I didn't even recognize him at first.

Tree of Life.

I saw this trailer. Then I went and found the movie and I watched it. It is captivating. I include it here because it followed my pattern, but more importantly, I hope all of you get a chance to watch it. It is stunning.

I don't know that fella, but I had a hard time finding Edward Norton's name in the credits... And that's why.

Griff the Invisible.

Yes, yes, I could have put this one in some other thread. Who's to say I didn't? He's invisible, right? This one looks fun. I only found it on teh interwebz, not in the cinema, but it still looks fun. 'Cause I like Griff.

Invictus.

"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."

This one is from a little while back, but still something I want to see. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon and a true story? It's got great potential.

Beasts of the Southern Wild.

We saw this trailer a few times and I was hooked the first time. Unfortunately, I never managed to see it in the theater. This looks like one of those movies that would benefit from being seen on the big screen. No matter. I'll find it somewhere. It looks awesome.

Up in the Air.

George Clooney is easy to watch on the screen. Maybe in person, I don't know, I didn't have $50,000 to find out his quality as a host during the last campaign, but that's not important. This is a George Clooney vehicle, and if I can find it streaming or at the local RedBox, I'll risk a buck fifty and a couple bags of popcorn. :corn:

George Clooney was good in Up In The Air, but the movie wasn't so good. He played a kind of misguided, pathetic person. There was one scene in particular that bugged me because nobody would ever behave that way, but the writers did it on purpose to force the story line into a particular arc.

If you are big Clooney fan, it's worth watching for a buck or two if you don't have anything better to do.

We went to see this the other night, it was great. It's one of those movies that rewards careful attention. It's a fairly simple story, complexly and repeatedly told. The costumes and makeup of the different characters played by the same actors make for some real double takes. I am glad I saw this one on the big screen, it's a big movie.

jim, you're going to have a *big* advantage having read the story beforehand.

This movie recently became available to me via Netflix (dvd only, not streaming) and we watched it. Boyo boyoboy, was I right, it *is* kinetic. An excellent performance by Denzel, unsurprisingly. I was surprised however to learn that this movie is based on true events. Wow. If you can get your hands on this one, you should. Excellent film.

Jellyfish Eyes.

This is not strictly speaking an anime project, but it definitely has the same vibe. Pokemon meets Death Note (live action) meets Summer Wars... I dunno. I want to see it. It's not available in theaters anymore and I can't find a region 1 dvd/bluray. Patient, I'm not.

I'm almost afraid to watch that ("Whiplash"). You see, even when he was Vern Schillinger in "Oz", or Chief Pope in 'The Closer', I like JK Simmons. And I like liking him. I'm afraid I won't like him as much after I watch "Whiplash". His character appears rather unlikeable.

Looking at his IMDb page, that's one busy sumbitch.

I've seen it.

It's *ok*. It would pair nicely with .... Machete or something like that. If you have Netflix, you can stream it; that's how I watched it. I wouldn't pay a buck and a half to get it from Redbox though.

It does deliver on the title, and there are plenty o' guns.

The Inch, now 12, really wants to see this movie. Really badly. He has deadpool t-shirts, a watch, all sorts of deadpool stuff.

I'm torn because although I know he has heard all, or maybe most, of the profanities in the film, I'm not so sure he is mature enough to watch it. It's hard to say what new ideas he might be exposed to prematurely in the film. E.g. "I pity the guy who tries to pressure her into prom night sex." or "You smell like you have a dick in your mouth."

I think that I am questioning it is an answer in itself.
DanaC • Feb 7, 2016 12:07 pm
If he is 12 years old, it seems inconceivable that he wouldn't have some idea of what a blowjob is. Nor, indeed, is it likely he won't have had some exposure to the idea that sometimes boys pressure girls into sex.

Seems pretty innocuous stuff to me. I'd be marginally more worried about people having their heads blown off than a few off-colour references. But what do I know. I watched a lot of movies that were patently unsuitable for a 12 year old when I was that age :p

In other trailer news, In a way, this trailer is enough but I still wish there was an entire movie behind it.

At a fourth grade sleepover (for the UK: rest of the kids were 9-10, I was 8-9,) we watched Night of the Demons. Of the many horrific things shown on screen along the general theme of lots of blood and lots of nudity, I distinctly recall, even now, images of a guy choking on a razor blade he'd eaten and the blade coming out the front of his adam's apple, and also a slutty girl who went crazy and drew all over her naked boobs with lipstick before shoving the lipstick all the way inside her body through her nipple.

And, hey, look how I turned out!

Want to badly. No way for inch though, I saw something somewhere where Reynolds was saying don't take shorties to this, wait for Civil War.
BigV • Feb 13, 2016 12:56 pm
SonofV liked it too, as did David Edelstein.

EDELSTEIN: Those aren't the best one-liners in "Deadpool," but there are great ones. I'd estimate 50 percent hit, another 30 whiz by inoffensively and only 20 percent are stinkers - a hell of a good percentage given the sheer number of jokes. And Ryan Reynolds knows how to skip along the surface of the role, but, when he needs to, bring out the big dramatic guns. He's an underrated actor, although maybe not after this film. There's nothing new about "Deadpool's" brand of self-conscious humor. In some ways, it resembles the old Hope and Crosby "Road" pictures, with one obvious exception - the action is played straight. Actually, it's lavishly, gratuitously gory with a gleeful kick, and at one point, the hero is tortured so cruelly for so long, I had to look away. Typically, Wade turns to us and says something along the lines of, this is where it becomes a horror movie, which makes this a have your torture porn and make fun of it too film. It's like the movie has eyes on the audience. There's one in joke alluding to actors in another Marvel series that had me laughing for a full minute. It anticipated my own response by half a second and patted me on the back for being in sync. Wade has some surprisingly tender and smutty scenes with the love of his life, Vanessa, played by Morena Baccarin, who's appeared in several superhero vehicles and was Brody's wife in the early seasons of "Homeland." Wade tells us she's not just another sex object pedaled by Hollywood with a smirk that acknowledges she is.

Ok, it's goin on the list.

DanaC • Feb 14, 2016 10:39 am
He's really funny in interviews.

Having heard more about Deadpool, it sounds more than a little unsuitable for the 11 and 12 year olds. Language and sexual humour aside, some of the violence sounds pretty extreme. In his review, Mark Kermode said there's a scene in which the lead is tortured, where he found himself having to look away from the screen.

They upped the size on Kong because they're prepping to remake King Kong Vs. Godzilla, and Legendary's Godzilla is the tallest ever unless Japan's new Shin Godzilla is bigger (can't remember). They want it to look like Kong might have a scrap of a chance, so they may actually have to shrink their Godzilla.

Monkey may be too big, but the rendering and overall design impress me much. I am also, despite my enduring crush on Tom Hiddleston, REALLY looking forward to seeing John Goodman as the "greedy corporate shill who has to be forced to divulge even the simplest truth about the situation." And, of course, John C. Reilly is kinda growing on me the way small plants would try to grow in that beard he's sporting in the Skull Island trailers.

Just about two weeks and the only theater in my town will be showing Skull Island. The troubles with the new Batman movie are causing me to wonder if Aquaman's ever actually going to make it to release, but I hope it does. I grew up with the wussy Saturday morning cartoon Justice League version of Aquaman. Now I wanna see someone recognize the total badassery someone like that would be capable of perpetrating in a gritty reboot, and while Jason Momoa wouldn't have been my first choice he may turn out to be a very, very good choice depending on the actual movie. If all this Batman flailing about doesn't tank the Justice League franchise DC may or may not still be trying to put together.
Snakeadelic • Mar 8, 2017 8:39 am
I officially have a date to go see this Sunday's matinee of Skull Island. I can't wait. I wanna see how John Goodman's character dies, cuz I'm pretty sure he's gonna die. And for the record, the single scariest thing I've seen in any of the trailers so far is that Cape buffalo-lookin beastie roughly the size of my apartment building. Cape buff are nasty, nasty animals. I wouldn't get that close to a regular-size one, which is a measly TON of angry flesh and bone even when they look placid.

And according to one of John C. Reilly's offhand lines in the movie, he's not even full grown. THAT is how Legendary is setting up for Kong vs. Godzilla--by the time that movie's made, Kong will be even bigger.

Plot of the movie: Predictable, really. No major twists.
Acting performances: Pretty average. I think Samuel L. Jackson just defaulted to "Nick Fury without the cryptic one-liners", which may be his actual personality.
Effects: HELL YEAH. Blood, guts, explosions, fights, all very well rendered and plentiful. Kong is not our friend. :D
Amount of monster in monster movie: Comparable to the Godzilla movie where he takes a meteor hit to the head before the opening credits (think that's Vs. Space Godzilla but I'd have to check). SO MUCH MONSTER. Not all monkey, either. The newly invented "this is why the natives worship him--he kills these things" monsters also remind me fondly of an obscure Godzilla villain, at least around the head.
