updated dog pic

jerguar • Feb 14, 2003 2:09 pm
I had posted a pic of my English Mastiff Maximus a while back, so I thought I'd throw in an updated one. This is my two boys Jerin (5 years old in the pic), and his best bud Maximus (not quite two here). He is now weighing in at 280 lbs. and has reached 36" tall at the shoulder. The couch kinda gives perspective....:D
dave • Feb 14, 2003 2:16 pm
JESUS!

I remember the old pictures, but I hadn't realized how big he was until you mentioned that couch. Good lord.
wolf • Feb 14, 2003 2:19 pm
What a delightfully stately looking beast.

I want to have one of those ... two actually. I like big dogs. :)
blowmeetheclown • Feb 14, 2003 3:23 pm
How many kids do you have to feed him?
jerguar • Feb 14, 2003 3:32 pm
but he prefers 6 lbs. of dry food a day...or an occasional 2 X 4 from my fence...
blowmeetheclown • Feb 14, 2003 3:54 pm
A 40lb bag/wk? Jeez!
jerguar • Feb 14, 2003 4:11 pm
and he doesn't eat regular food. It's a fancy giant breed dog food. Lookms like big charcoal briquets. If anyone ever wants a Mastiff, be prepared to shell out a couple grand a year just in food and pigs ears...he's very much worth it though...:)
Undertoad • Feb 14, 2003 4:27 pm
The thing I can't stop thinking about is the dogshit removal job. Our two 12 pound Bostons produce little AA-sized units that dry up overnight and blow away in the morning wind. We only have dog duty duty when they've been hitting the same spot for a while (as now, when it's snowy). Otherwise we can share the backyard in peace.

40 lbs of food per week means 40 lbs of dogshit per week, I don't envy you that particular part of big dog ownership!
jerguar • Feb 14, 2003 4:55 pm
it's actually a lot more like picking up cow pies than dog shiat. Luckily I have a large easement behind my fence where I can just huck the gaggers over. Very green back there....
warch • Feb 14, 2003 5:28 pm
..I can just huck the gaggers over.

That made me giggle.
Handsome as he is, a close encounter with that giant would huck the gaggers outta me.
slang • Feb 14, 2003 6:23 pm
Now *thats* a fucking dog! 280lbs! How the hell do you transport him? Or does he just drive?

When I grow up I want a dog just like this. I'll have a separate wing of the house set aside for him though, I don't need to get confrontational with a dog this big. He'll have *his* recliner and I'll have mine.

As for the dogfood and related costs. Does he work?

LMAO. Very funny description UT.
lawman • Feb 14, 2003 10:02 pm
wow.... all I can say is wow. I'll bet he is a gentile giant... otherwise he would have eaten you or your offspring!

big dogs rule.... chew toy dogs are annoying IMO.

still I find it hard to imagine playing with a dog that outweighed me by a hundred pounds.

your kids must adore him!
Elspode • Feb 15, 2003 12:36 am
What's the brown fuzzy thing in front of him? Lunch?

Nice dog, man...I do *not* have the patience or time to dedicate to a monster like that. It is all we can do to spoil our mini-mutt.
And • Feb 15, 2003 6:15 pm
Let the big daaaawg eat. Roof, roof!

A 12" tall dog in 26" of snow - Bean can't get any ground clearance and is so frustrated that he's left his obsession behind him. This is the first time he's voluntarily turned away from his "round thing", the name of which I dare not even type. (He might be reading.)
wolf • Feb 17, 2003 7:23 pm
One of my friends has a boston and a miniature pinscher ... I sincerely hope she took pictures of them in the snow. Of course both dogs are such wussies that she probably had to shovel a patch of yard for them to go out in.
jerguar • Feb 18, 2003 11:30 am
generally speaking Max is very gentle, but he get's protective of the kids, and he's definitely a good guard dog. My favorite thing is when solicitors come to my door to try and sell me something unwanted, and I open the door and let him out. Some people literally look like they need to change their drawers. Little do they know he just wants to play. I don't really worry about theft, though. The little brown thing in front is our other dog, a mutt named Proximo (see the 'gladiator' references?), he's like, 50 pounds and think he runs the show. Picks fights all the time. Max puts up with it for a good long while until he gets fed up, then proceeds to fling Prox across the yard a good 20 feet. Funny to look out the window and see a brown ball of fur going ballistic at random times.....
warch • Feb 18, 2003 2:06 pm
Tony! Thats a great pic!

[Jewish Umbrage] So, whaddaya saying, that if he were a Jewish dog he would have eaten the kids? [/Jewish Umbrage]
jerguar • Feb 18, 2003 5:56 pm
...this was from when Max was a puppy (a mere 200 lbs.), but kinda funny.
wolf • Feb 18, 2003 7:53 pm
Additional awwww ...

Is that all dogdrool?
slang • Feb 18, 2003 8:06 pm
I luv this dog.

Hi Max! (scratches Max behind his ears, pats him on the head (in a way that doesn't piss him off))

Here you go Bean. (Throws a dog bone to Bean so he doesn't feel left out if he's reading this)
wolf • Feb 18, 2003 8:18 pm
I don't think I'd be able to stop at a scratching behind the ears.

Maximus looks like a full body hug kind of a dog ... Rolling him over on the floor for a big ol' belly rubbing too.

Is he a facelicker? (I like that in a dog. Yeah, I'm strange. I'm well aware of that thanks...)
jerguar • Feb 19, 2003 11:12 am
the only negative thing I can saw about my pup is that, yes, that is all drool and it happens ALL THE TIME. Mastiff owners like to call them 'slingers' because they end up on the ceiling, walls, furniture, and sometimes on my wife's face. She doesn't do too well with that scenario. He's only an occasional face-licker though, which is good when he's foamed up...

but yes, he's definitely down for the full-body hug and belly scratch. His neck is 36" around, so giving him a squeeze is like hugging a grown man's waist...
windhund • Feb 19, 2003 2:00 pm
Now that there is a DAWG! And Bean is just terminally cute :)

My brother- and sister-in-law have 2 bullmastiffs. When they got the first one, they brought her to our house. We had 2 greyhounds. The younger greyhound wanted to play with her. Greyhounds play by running. Which led to the ridiculous sight of our greyhound running in circles in the yard with the bully desperately trying to keep up, and drool being flung EVERYWHERE. We had to hose them both down after that - they were covered in slime. BIL and SIL keep plates stationed in strategic places around the house with damp washcloths on them so they can do spit cleanup whenever necessary.
wolf • Feb 20, 2003 2:57 am
36" neck? Wow! Do you buy him belts rather than collars? Not that a traditional collar would be of any use if he decided he wanted to head off in a direction other than the one you wanted him to go ...
jerguar • Feb 20, 2003 10:06 am
I either buy him a bridle stopper made for a horse at the nearest tack shop, or build my own at the home depot....I've yet to see one online bigger than 30", and since his neck is 36" around, I need about a 40" collar or so..
bluedog • Feb 21, 2003 10:25 pm
My girl was watching and drooling over my shoulder. What a handsome beast. My girl only weights 145 pounds.....Looking into her eyes is like looking into deepest Africa.
jerguar • Feb 21, 2003 10:34 pm
So, do you have an English? How old? Post a pic so I can show Max what his lady looks like...heh:D

jerguar • Feb 21, 2003 10:54 pm
Don't get me wrong, but Ridgebacks can't fade the king of dogs...just my opinion though...I like the fact that regardless of the circumstance, my dog won't be fazed, By another dog, human whatever, and he knows it so he's completely mellow...
Undertoad • Feb 21, 2003 11:17 pm
Not fazed by ANY dog?

Image
jerguar • Feb 21, 2003 11:34 pm
any non-rapid, or possesed dog...
wolf • Feb 22, 2003 1:41 am
If I didn't know that Bean was smaller than the infamous "round thing" (notice, I didn't type it either in case I was overheard ;)) that would be an extremely intimidating picture.

It is a very COOL picture, nonetheless.

Have you ever, just for your own (and ultimately our) amusement ever considered purchasing a rawhide bone intended for a much larger dog? I'm not saying get the one that's sized for Maximus, but one that would be to scale for, say, a German Shepherd?
Griff • Feb 22, 2003 10:03 am

We are not allowed to use the words Frisbee or cat in the house or type them in a color Merlin can see. This dog is mental.
Undertoad • Feb 22, 2003 11:12 am
Ball. Whaddya know, the color thing works!

Actually that's Pearl as the rabid/possessed beastie; we have two of 'em, one's mostly black and the other's mostly white. (An integrated household.)
Griff • Feb 22, 2003 11:42 am
Gorgeous animals all. I'd say in a tight spot the ridgeback is the best wing man here but I'm partial to my boy. I can almost hear Pearl working her chewey, nice pic.
windhund • Feb 22, 2003 12:13 pm
Merlin is beautiful!

My Idol is also beautiful, and he fears nothing (he would like nothing more than to chase and catch one of those pesky SUVs he sees on his walks), but hopefully he'd be wise enough to leave Maximus alone ... hopefully ....
Undertoad • Feb 22, 2003 12:51 pm
Good lookin' pup!

Oh and Wolf, yes! There is a Maximus-sized bone that is available out there. Bean is really excited when he sees it.

Image

And for a while both of them gnaw away.

Image

By the late afternoon, the excitement wears off.

Wow! I bet Idol is Speed Racer eh? Sharp looking dog. An aquaintance of mine has a borzoi, she is probably the loveliest non-human creature going.
wolf • Feb 22, 2003 2:27 pm
fantastic pics all!!! (I particularly liked Bean's look of Wonder at the big bone ... "ooooh, I get to chew on ALL of that. I'm king of the world!!!")

I have really got to move into a place that allows pets. :( I miss fur.

Griff,

Yes, Idol is in fact a retired racing greyhound. His racing name was All I Can Be. Was in ~150 races in Florida. He's the great nephew of another greyhound we had who died back in 1998, rest his soul. Roman was the best dog ever. I miss that old guy.

When I inquired about adopting Idol the lady running the adoption program asked me in a very suspicious voice why I wanted him. I explained the above, and she suddenly became much friendlier. Turns out she was afraid I'd seen him race and just wanted him for his looks. It's a good thing he is so handsome, because he tries our patience on a daily basis. ;)

Undertoad,

Those big bone/little dog pictures are hysterical! Those guys must be so much fun to live with.

Undertoad • Mar 16, 2003 11:32 am
Hee hee! It is amazing how much bed space these small dogs demand.
Leus • Mar 19, 2003 10:45 am
Sorry for my ignorance, but what breed are these dogs? (the close-up picture of that... er, monster with the bone is absolutely hilarious)
Undertoad • Mar 19, 2003 10:51 am
They're Boston Terriers. (The white one is mis-marked.) They're roughly half-Bulldog, half-Terrier. Small, bold, and very funny.

That's a sound idea, waiting until the kid gets through the "mark everything" phase before putting in good flooring.
