infinite monkey • Nov 16, 2012 10:12 am
wtf?

Apple pies. Ho Ho's. King Dons (call 'em Ding Dongs if you want...but that wasn't original.) Wonder Bread. Cupcakes...

None of it good for you, but those of us still in touch with our inner child like an occasional piece of crap food...something about enjoying life a little.
infinite monkey • Nov 16, 2012 10:12 am
And I wonder if the 18,500 employees will get over it?
Lamplighter • Nov 16, 2012 10:17 am
Let them eat the Twinkies that are stored in the nuclear bomb shelters.
glatt • Nov 16, 2012 10:44 am
I may have had a loaf of Nature's Pride in the last 5 years, but other than that, I haven't eaten anything made by Hostess since I was a kid.

The brands will be sold off and the factories too. Maybe some of the workers will be able to work for new owners, but most likely, most of them are done.
Trilby • Nov 16, 2012 10:59 am
Those Hostess 'pies'? Cherry and Chocolate?

OMG.

Eat a whole one and voila~you're diabetic!
SamIam • Nov 16, 2012 11:18 am
Do they make Suzy Q's, as well? I can do without all that sweet junk food except for Suzy Q's. The sugar rush from one package of those can keep me boucing off the walls for hours.
Trilby • Nov 16, 2012 11:22 am
Creedence Clearwater Revival makes Suzy Q's!
SamIam • Nov 16, 2012 11:40 am
"Suzy Q, Oh, Suzy Q! I love you, yes I do. Oh, Suzy Q!" :joylove:

Twinkies. Meh.

Zingers, now, that's another story altogether!

I didn't mean "you'll get over it" as in, "you'll be better off anyway," I seriously meant everyone will get over it, and very quickly. Like glatt said, there's a certain nostalgia factor in the Hostess brand, but obviously no one was eating their crap or the company wouldn't have had to declare bankruptcy twice. There are plenty of sugary indulgences out there that don't taste like glucose-infused cardboard.

As for the 18,500 workers, they're shoving the blame hard on the unions, but I'd be very curious to see what the salary was for the CEO and board of directors for the last 5 years. I'd bet any amount of money (their salaries, even,) that they weren't taking pay cuts to save the company, and that they clearly knew the end was coming and decided to just take the money and run. It's exactly what the execs did at my last employer who went under, and every other company I've ever read about that went under.

Also, if someone has been a baker for 25 years and the only thing they know how to bake is shitty "snack cakes," then it isn't Hostess' fault they can't find a new job. People are changing what they eat, but they aren't changing the fact that they eat.
infinite monkey • Nov 16, 2012 3:13 pm

I love this: Also, if someone has been a baker for 25 years and the only thing they know how to bake is shitty "snack cakes," then it isn't Hostess' fault they can't find a new job.

True, true.
jimhelm • Nov 16, 2012 3:18 pm
yeah. those people aren't bakers. they're factory workers. they will get jobs through their union in some other factory where they stand around all day pressing a button, and twirling a dial over and over again as their heart slowly dies, and their soul runs out the bottom of their poor misbegotten hammer toe havin feetses.

it's survival of the tastiest! natural snack selection.

some one will buy the rights to twinkies though. bet on it. they'll cost $3 each and you will only find them when you're on vacation someplace weird... but don't give up hope. they will return.
Spexxvet • Nov 16, 2012 3:24 pm
Hostess made unreasonable demands, including wage and benefit cuts of around 30% for workers, while top executives of the company received large pay increases.

“The crisis facing Hostess Brands is the result of nearly a decade of financial and operational mismanagement that resulted in two bankruptcies, mountains of debt, declining sales and lost market share,” said union President Frank Hurt. “The Wall Street investors who took over the company after the last bankruptcy attempted to resolve the mess by attacking the company’s most valuable asset – its workers.”

Isn't it better that Americans, not Chinese, stand around all day pressing a button, and twirling a dial over and over again as their heart slowly dies, and their soul runs out the bottom of their poor misbegotten hammer toe havin feetses? I mean isn't it?

Thanks, folks, for shittin' all over the thread.

Others did the same thing in other forums.

You folks may not like Twinkies (which is your prerogative) but 'I' do.

I mourn the loss of an icon and institution.

I didn't start this thread (here and in other places) as a rallying point for politics, economics, or philosophy. I started this thread to say 'good bye' to sumthin' 'I' like.

Pity some folks can't just shut the fuck up and let sumthin' stand unaltered, unadorned, and unadulterated.

Not everything is a platform for your self-aggrandizement, -marketing, and -embellishment.

Finally, we find something in this world that HQ really does care about.

I was going to post something about Twinkies being the bane of Wall Street,
or something like that. But now, out of respect for HQ's feelings, I won't.

Twinkies will be bought, manufactured, and distributed by someone else. Maybe Little Debbie. They will return.

Yeah, and it will be a gift to the job creaters...the union will be gone and the jobs will pay minimum wage, with part-time hours and no health benefits.

Is Little Debbie union? Google wouldnt let me find out.

See wut he did? The Man legalizes pot then eliminates the Twinkie. Conspiracy!
SamIam • Nov 17, 2012 11:54 am
And what about the "twinkie defense"? The prison population is sure to swell if that gets taken away.

But word on the street has it that some other company may very well buy the Hostess brand name along with the rights to manufacture its plethora of sugary treats lacking all nutritional value.

Meanwhile, Henry and other twinkie fans can buy them on e-Bay for a mere $60.00 each.
Big Sarge • Nov 17, 2012 1:46 pm
See what happened when you re`elected Obama. I bet this was a secret plan that the First Lady had been working. First it was school lunches, now Twinkies, what's next?? I hope she doesn't go after my Mountain Dew.

I had my PHA today. I'm good to go for another year, as long as I don't have sharp objects to play with. They let me have some neat crayons
Crimson Ghost • Nov 17, 2012 6:17 pm
Where are the fucking Twinkies?
There's a box of Twinkies in that grocery store. Not just any box of Twinkies, the last box of Twinkies that anyone will enjoy in the whole universe. Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date. Some day very soon, Life's little Twinkie gauge is gonna go... empty.
Where are you, you spongy, yellow, delicious bastards?
SamIam • Nov 17, 2012 9:00 pm
I was in the Safeway grocery store today, and my eye was caught by a cheerful display of baked goods placed close to the store entrance. Sure enough, the items on display were Safeway brand Twinkies, Suzy Qs, Ho Ho's and the like.

Didn't take long for them to jump in to fill the gap, and I bet Safeway is not alone.

Take heart, Henry!

If the products are so good - so tasty - then why is the company going bankrupt? Listen to jobs needed on that assembly line. One long time employee was doing the 'Twinkie Straighter' job. Yes their equipment does not put freshly baked Twinkies always in the right position. Rather than fix the equipment, business school graduates decided it was better to have a human correct the machine's mistakes.

Due to bad management (and bad management also blames the employees), then even manufacturing equipment could not be fixed or upgraded. According to spread sheets, it was cheaper to create a job called a Twinkie Straightener. No "Wonder" Hostess top management was getting robust income increases. It was the union's fault.

Look, they were born that way, and it's not up to Hostess to force them into a lifestyle that would be a lie to themselves and everyone around them.

Saw a Twinkies dolll sold at an antique shop today.

That didn't take long.

Spex, it's nothing personal... it's just business.

If a business goes bankrupt and the pension fund is insolvent,
the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) steps in to meet
the obligations of the fund. Corporate exec's of failing businesses
know this, and so have no reason to put "their" $ into the fund.
Once the business is in bankruptcy, the PBGC becomes
(one of many) creditor of the plan's sponsor (the business).

So the question here becomes:
Can the PBGC make Twinkies that last as long as those stored in our nuclear fall-out shelters ?
Ibby • Nov 19, 2012 3:21 pm
Nice, spex. I just dropped in to post basically the exact same thing.
SamIam • Nov 19, 2012 3:30 pm
Just some more "job creators" taking advantage of their Bush era tax cuts before it's too late. :right:
orthodoc • Nov 19, 2012 4:16 pm
But I thought mucking around with pension funds was one of the few things that pierces the corporate veil. Not meeting obligations to the pension fund is equivalent to stealing from the fund, when the $$$ was clearly available. Why aren't these execs having a forensic audit (well, it sounds like the numbers are already out there, but I'm sure there's more criminal behavior to be unearthed)? And having to pay restitution, and going to prison ...

Yeah, I know. :mad2: I'll ease up on the endocannabinoids ...

The brand Bimbo is sold along side with Hostess down here in Houston. It has all the same kinds of snacks, if not more variety. In the more Hispanic store, i.e. as Fiesta and Walmart Supermercado, there's more of Bimbo goods than Hostess. As a matter of fact, all I see are Bimbo products and other Mexican snacks at the cash register area.

"The company became the world's largest bread manufacturing company in 2011 ... Grupo Bimbo products are sold in 19 countries."

Some wall street dude on the radio claimed the Hostess brands are worth an aggregate of $85 Billion. And the taxpayers are paying those pensions.
