New section discussion: somethingland

Undertoad • Nov 12, 2012 1:29 am
Sexobon pointed out to me that Nothingland is "being crowded by various somethings to the point where those pursuing games, diversions and time wasters can feel guilty about bumping those threads after a significant something has been modestly posted in Nothingland. It's also becoming difficult to wade through the somethings to find the nothings and vice versa."

I agree, but I said that we should at least talk about it in Meta so we are clear about what's happening on the Cellar. The proposal here is that we create Somethingland, to hold threads that are actually meaningful and important to folks, such as the "What" kind of threads that are certainly more than Nothing.

It's a good idea.
Undertoad • Nov 12, 2012 7:49 am
Keep posting in this thread to remind me - I'm crazy busy right now and will probably forget to get this done
Trilby • Nov 12, 2012 8:24 am
I like the idea of somethingland.
Clodfobble • Nov 12, 2012 9:55 am
I agree that Nothingland is abused with substantial content.

On the other hand, what's the difference between Somethingland, and Home Base?
Flint • Nov 12, 2012 11:23 am
I as well cannot conceptualize what the distinction would be between the existing Home Base, and the proposed Somethingland. Home Base is (if I understand correcly) the place for substantive, but hard-to-catagorize threads; whereas Nothingland is for the fluff. That being said, we already have to make a value judgment between two "general" sections--how is adding a third "Goldilocks" category going to help us? In my opinion this just adds another rabbit hole for the thread you're looking for to be buried in.
SamIam • Nov 12, 2012 2:01 pm
People have been posting some pretty heavy duty stuff in Nothingland. It's like "I really don't want to bother anyone, but since you're apparently not busy, seeing as how you're looking at stuff in Nothingland, maybe you won't mind reading my post here and I'm not being a drama queen - it's Nothing really."

Sometimes people need to get stuff out, but try not to make a big deal over it. In such instances, I think they'll continue to post in Nothingland, even if they have the option of Somethingland. Just my humble opinion.
glatt • Nov 12, 2012 2:07 pm
I use the post whore thread a lot because I don't feel like what I'm posting rises to the level of being important enough for its own thread. Plus, what if I do start my own thread for one of those things, and I only get a polite comment or two? I'll feel more like my thread is a failure.
Clodfobble • Nov 12, 2012 2:11 pm
Is it rude and/or too much work to have moderators move things out of Nothingland with greater discretion, when appropriate?
jimhelm • Nov 12, 2012 2:12 pm
Something, something, something, dark siiiiide
Clodfobble • Nov 12, 2012 2:24 pm
I would like to note that I am tickled by the name "Somethingland," and would vote to rename Home Base even if nothing else changes.
jimhelm • Nov 12, 2012 2:25 pm
2nd!
Flint • Nov 12, 2012 2:40 pm
3rd. This would be less, not more, confusing.

Pooka 4ths this.

That seems a good idea. But then it would, it came from Clodfobble's brain.

5ths!

I agree that there seems to be little difference between Home Base and Somethingland.

And I thought I'm the only one who feels this way. And often times I don't even post because of the reasons above.

Why change Home Base? Why not change Nothingland to Outfield or Left field? Why should home base have to suffer?

Won't somebody please think of the boys of summer?
Flint • Nov 12, 2012 6:35 pm
You know what's funny about the "post whore" thread? Because it has no discernable subject, I don't know why I should open it, and I never do. It is literally a black hole that y'all's posts disappear down.

(Because it's all about me, right?)

I would rather see a thread with a real subject, and 3-4 posts, than a formless blob of random schizophrenic jabber.
xoxoxoBruce • Nov 12, 2012 10:30 pm
I agree, if a thread only gets a couple responses doesn't mean it's not worth reading. There's a lot of threads that get read by many but not many responses. Just because a thread didn't start a debate doesn't mean it didn't inform. When it stops being read, it'll disappear pretty quickly.

I've stuck things in Nothingland because I didn't want to mask a good discussion in home base.

Me, too. too confusing.

but it's really all about me.
Aliantha • Nov 13, 2012 7:52 pm
I post in the post whore thread when I just have a random thought or something that I really think no one will be interested in, but might get a chuckle out of if they happen to open the thread because they're bored.

I'm guilty of starting plenty of threads in nothingland because I don't really think they fit anywhere and I don't think they're important enough for home base.
Ibby • Nov 14, 2012 1:38 am
I almost always start a new thread if it's worth sharing and I can't find / search isnt turning up a thread thats already applicable. I'm more on the side of threads that don't get a whole lot of comments and just making lotsa threads - but, then again, I tend to avoid really really long threads because I feel the need to read from the beginning, so post whore and word assn and stuff like that neeeever get opened. I don't go in nothingland in general much; I open up the board but rarely click through on threads and then i feel bad when i don't hear about important stuff being discussed in "what's making you ________ today" threads that are too big for me to venture into or keep up with... sry ppl who talk about serious stuff i never know what to say anyway but I love you all promise <#
footfootfoot • Nov 14, 2012 4:43 pm
From now on, I'm gonna use Nothingland only for posting things of substance and import. The other 99.95% of my posts which are substantive and important I shall put in be a post whore.
glatt • Nov 14, 2012 7:12 pm
Perfect! I'll read them all there.
Flint • Nov 14, 2012 10:03 pm
You crazy kids!

I can't believe it, I'm an old fuddy-duddy of the Cellar. Me!
sexobon • Nov 14, 2012 11:39 pm
In my suggestion to UT, I included a list of threads from Nothingland that are similar in nature which I thought would be nice to have consolidated by moving them to a separate forum. Home Base content is more general in nature and draws wider interest which is putting off those who want to post more modestly as evidenced by these threads being posted in Nothingland. I believe a forum like Somethingland can preserve that modesty while according threads of this nature greater dignity and give us better viewing of the entire related selection which is now interspersed with games, diversions and time wasters across several pages. Perhaps seeing that list would better frame this proposal ... from Nothingland to Somethingland:

Somethingland
Something stirring feelings - venting threads,
sharing, emotional support

Pointless
What's mildly irritating you today?
What's upsetting you today?
What blindsided you today?
Be a post whore!
What's making you happy today?
What's kind of irking you, but might work out OK in the end?
What's mildly amusing you today?
What might be making you a tad apprehensive, but might not, as it's too soon to tell
The Meaningless Drunk Thread
How you know you're old
What's scorching your groove today?
Please kill me
What just blew you away?
Uckity Uck Uck Uck!
I'm sorry
I was the Mean Girl
I have a stalker
The Horrifyingly Maddening/Sad Nightmare
What just made you LOL
The journey begins
What's Vexing You Today?
More bad karma. Or something.
What Surprised you today?
What's bumming your stone today?
What's making you a tad apprehensive today?
What Do You Have Mixed Feelings About Today?
What, perhaps should concern you but maybe OK to ignore for now? Could be TMI
What is pissing you off this time?
what life decisions have you made today?
What's boring the bollocks out of you today?
What's perplexing you today?

Thanks for your consideration.
