I'll play. :D I'm hoping not only to participate for Libby but also to shame myself into eating better. :p: Yesterday was a busy day otherwise I would've eaten more.

Sept. 29, 2012

In the morning, I ate sushi. In the picture, the plate of white rice belongs to my niece. The plate with nori was both for my sister and me. Yeah, wasn't much food. I drank a cup of osmanthus oolong tea. Lunch, I had a Vietnamese sandwich. It's about 7,8 inches long. It's cut diagonally so the left side sticks out and makes it look longer than it really is. Inside is shredded chicken, sliced cucumbers, sliced jalapeno, pickled carrots and jicama, Vietnamese mayo sauce and a dash of soy sauce. My sister adds that it's a Vietnamese secret mayo sauce that's equilvalent to McD's Big Mac sauce. For dinner, I had a hot and spicy chicken sandwich from McD's and a medium size banana.

Sept. 30, 2012

I ate half a dinner roll so I wouldn't have uler problems before making pancakes. Afterwards I only had 1/8 slice of an 8" pancake with 2 tsp. of syrup on the side because I was tired after everything was done. Had a slice and had to clean up. :greenface (Yes, I know the other one is kinda burnt looking, hihi.)
Lola Bunny • Sep 30, 2012 4:07 pm
Ate at 2PM...

1/2 cup of rice with sautee bell peppers, mushrooms, tofu, and some imitation meat thingy (don't know what it is) and some fried eggs

1/3 cup of rice with Thai sour soup, which I had to add some lemon juice in because it wasn't sour enough for me. I normally would also add spoonfuls of hot sauce, but I've been getting heartburn so no extra spicy food for me for a while. :p:

one cream puff, 3 pieces of green tea mooncake

2 cups of hot tea
footfootfoot • Sep 30, 2012 5:39 pm
can I come live with you?
Gravdigr • Sep 30, 2012 6:02 pm
Damn. Now I'm hungry.

Again.
Lola Bunny • Sep 30, 2012 6:32 pm
Why? The food isn't that great. :frog: I usually eat plain pancakes so I didn't think of buying anything to go with the "souffle pancakes" as the recipe is called. Told my sister the next time I'm making "pizza" pancakes, piling on whip cream, strawberries, blueberries, or bananas and have the banana maple syrup ready. Or pile on the pancakes with sausages, bacon, and eggs. She gave me a face and said, "no more gianenormous pancakes." At least if you live here Foot, I could have fun making those pancakes and have someone eat them too. :D

Okay, 5:00 PM....had Lay's chips.
Lola Bunny • Oct 1, 2012 12:20 pm
At the Full Moon Festival around 8:00 PMish...shared the food with my sister. I ate one eggroll, two pate bread, one steam bun sandwich with a slice of vegetarian ham, two cream puffs, some fruits, and a small cup of soda.

Around 10:30PMish, four slices of moon cake of the four flavors: lotus paste, mung bean paste, green tea with mung bean and salted egg (picture above), and durian paste. Also two pieces of dark chocolate and some tea.

8:00 AM Crust of a french bread roll, half with vienna sausage, half with butter.

9:00 AM Quarter of the leftover gianenormous with two slices of turkey spam. Iced coffee with a tsp of raw sugar.

11:30 AM A quarter piece of durian mung bean moon cake and a cup of osmanthus oolong tea.

(It's Full Moon or Mid-Autumn Festival season, so we have lots of moon cakes. :p:)

Haha...I would be so offended if I haven't heard worse descriptions of the durian smell. You know what people say about durian, either you love it or hate it. Fortunately for me, I have a dull sense of smell so I can tolerate lots of foul smelling food. I don't know about where you live, but most Chinatown should sell moon cakes. Pity you don't live nearby. I have 5 boxes of moon cakes lying right here, mostly lotus paste flavor. I would be more than happy to give you a box or two. (We already finished the mixed nuts moon cakes.) I'll be gaining a few or 10 lbs. after eating all these moon cakes. :p:

Burlington, VT (pop. 42,417) doesn't have much of a Chinatown, i'm afraid. There's a Thai market on my street and a Vietnamese one up the block, but that's about it.
Lola Bunny • Oct 1, 2012 3:59 pm
And the Vietnamese store doesn't carry any moon cakes? I guess there's not much of an Asian population there. Pity. You should move to Houston. In Chinatown even the street names are in Chinese. :D
Lola Bunny • Oct 1, 2012 5:43 pm
3:00 PMish Ate two slices of leftover pizza found in the freezer.
Lola Bunny • Oct 1, 2012 7:16 pm
5:00PMish Had the last half slice of the leftover pizza from the freezer and 1/2 cup of juice that a sister of mine made. She told me what it was but I forgot what's in there. Almond milk, cherry, and something and maybe something else. She's a smoothie nut. :D
Lola Bunny • Oct 1, 2012 10:10 pm

Oct. 2, 2012

7:15 AM Two crusts of French rolls with butter.

9:30 AMish Two steam buns with vegetarian ham and cilantro. A mug of "cam thao" tea. It's herbal could be used for heartburn.

Your food is so interesting!
Lola Bunny • Oct 2, 2012 2:14 pm
Hehe....thank you? :D

12:30 PM I ate a McD's ice cream cone and half a large fries. I just found out a cone is 200 calories and a large fries is 400 calories. So, I just consumed 400 calories, and that's just a snack. Dang!
Lola Bunny • Oct 2, 2012 8:26 pm
2:15 PMish I ate a plate of steam rice cakes with minced tofu and soyu sauce mixture. You can't see the steam rice cakes in the picture because they're white on a white plate. If anyone's interested in looking it up, it's called "banh beo" in Vietnamese. I also ate two pieces of moon cakes and a cup of hot tea.
Lola Bunny • Oct 2, 2012 8:33 pm
5:30 PMish I ate my nephew's leftover rice and fried eggs. I added braised tofu and boiled egg. Then I shared a can of flavored sparkling water with my sister.
Lola Bunny • Oct 3, 2012 2:25 pm
8:30 AMish A bowl of spinach soup with a cup of rice. About half an apple. Two pieces of moon cakes.

1:00 PM Half a cup of skim milk

Really? I've always thought the food I eat is quite ordinary. A literal translation from the Viet phrase is "commoner's food." :p: The food doesn't seem much but it's quite a bit for my stomach. And these days, I've been getting indigestion and heartburn. :greenface

2:15 PM Half of the leftover "gianenormous" pancake and 2 eggs scrambled and about 1 Tbsp of syrup. For dessert, I ate about half a bowl of papaya.

3:30 PMish Eight grapes (my nephew's leftover from lunch)
Big Sarge • Oct 3, 2012 7:07 pm

Hhehe....that's because she's still young. When I was in my early 20's I could eat more than some men. My middle age body can't handle food as well as it used to. :p:

6:00 PM About a cup of white rice with steamed broccoli and fried eggs. The bowl on the left is soy sauce with chili peppers. Spicy soy sauce makes everything tastes better. :D I also ate three baby carrots. For dessert, I ate 3 pieces of durian moon cakes and hot green tea.

10-4-12

7:30 AM The crust of one french dinner roll with butter.

9:00 AMish Instant noodle with some salad. A cup of cafe latte with a tsp. of vanilla Torani. Half a cup of goldfish.

10:30 AM A piece of Japanese hard candy
Lola Bunny • Oct 4, 2012 5:49 pm
2:15 PM A big bowl of veggies and tofu and macaroni noodles soup. For dessert, a cup of grapes.
Lola Bunny • Oct 4, 2012 5:56 pm
I just realized that I've been dismissing all the positive comments y'all have been giving me about my food. The reason is because my sister complains all the time how our food is so unappealing. Also, whenever this girl I know happens to come in during our mealtime, she would always sneer at our food. She couldn't understand how we could eat such unappealing food so heartily. So, in my mind, the food I usually eat ain't so great. When I received comments that my food looks good, my first instinct was, "Really??!!??" So, what I'm really trying to say is that I thank you for all your positive comments. :D

Aww...thank you. :D

Dinner at 6:00PM I didn't really feel like eating but was hungry so decided to eat a cup of white rice with spicy soy sauce. Normally you would see pieces of chili peppers in the food but my stomach is not quite back to normal yet. Therefore, I still need to stay off really spicy or sour stuffs. :( For dessert, I had half a bowl grapes and one bowl of papaya. Afterwards, I felt like eating something salty, hihi, so I had a 1/4 cup of goldfish. I'm measuring my food so I'd limit the junk food. If I eat chips from the bag, I would continue to eat forever. :p:
Lola Bunny • Oct 4, 2012 9:57 pm
8:30 PM Wasn't hungry but when I saw my sister make the sandwich, I ate one too. Had an avocado and baby spinach leaves sandwich, one baby carrot, 1/4 white peach, 1/2 Snicker's ice cream.
limey • Oct 5, 2012 5:00 am
I think measuring the junk food is a good way to keep it in the diet (gotta have some fun, after all!). I like salted peanuts and prefer to buy a bigger bag as it's better value. But then I try to remember to measure out a small bowlful and put the rest well away for another time (preferably not ten minutes later, but that happens sometimes!).

Mmmmm, great looking sandwich. Imma steal that idea from you!

slice avocado, baby spinach (or whatever greens you have in the fridge), a tbsp of italian dressing or whatever dressing that's salty enough, a slice of cheese, dash of salt and pepper :thumb:

8:00 AM One slice of sandwich bread spread with chicken salad.

9:30 AMish A plate of egg noodles tossed with Vietnamese-style sate chili sauce topped with seafood balls. Two pieces of moon cakes. A cup of cafe latte with 2 tsp. of vanilla Torani.

Because I eat more ethnic food, it seems more interesting. :p: Since some of you showed interest, I will post the food I eat that's Vietnamese (Asian).

For dinner today, I ate "chicken rice." A whole chicken is boiled in water until cooked. The water then is used to cook the rice so it'd have the chicken flavor. The uncooked rice is cooked in oil and garlic first then cook with "chicken broth." Chicken is shredded and tossed with a Vietnamese mint "rau ram." The rice and chicken is eaten together with a fish sauce mixture. Fish sauce is mixed with crushed ginger and garlic.
Lola Bunny • Oct 8, 2012 9:44 pm
I splurged on junk food today. For dessert, I ate Chinese coffee sponge cake and some shrimp chips.

OK, so this is what I mean. That looks delicious.

Okay, today's food is not mouth-watering, but it's different.

The first picture is brown rice eaten with salted sesame. Hulled sesame seeds are toasted, crushed, then mixed with salt.

The second picture is Vietnamese loofah stir-fry. It’s a type of squash, I think. I googled the Vietnamese name and that’s what I came up with. I ate plain Vietnamese loofah stir-fry; however, people usually stir-fry loofah with meat or shrimp.

The third picture is Vietnamese loofah. If you let the fruit over mature before before plucking it or simply let it dry out, you can cut it into the loofah bath sponges.
Lola Bunny • Oct 13, 2012 9:29 pm
The first picture is fish paste. Fish is made into a paste with seasonings. You can cook into in soups or fried like in the picture.

The second picture is “bun rieu.” There are lots of variation to the dish so y’all can google it if you’re interested. The jar on the right is shrimp paste, which is added to the dish. Normally I also add chili sauce but I ran out. It’s like the one in the third picture except I eat the one without garlic.

Well, she's a pudgy, middle-age woman and not me. :p: I'm too lazy to cook and whenever I do, I usually cook dishes with recipes where I can follow along. :D Not sure what it's called in English, but there's this practice where you can pay someone, restaurant, etc. to cook for you. Each morning I pick up lunch and dinner. I pay them monthly so I don't have to cook. :D This way, I get to eat food that's more complicated or time-consuming to cook.

Big Sarge;834500 wrote:

Well, I've decided to post only Vietnamse food. I've been eating non-Vietnamese food the last couple of days. Well, on Sunday, I did but the presentation wasn't great since I didn't get a chance to sit down and eat til late in the evening. I was about all day and snacked on food samples on Costco. You know that you can get really full eating samples? Wow, I had everything from soup, appetizers, main dish, desserts, chips, and drinks. Yesterday, I had chicken fajitas all day. This morning, I had peanut butter and jelly sandwich. :p: Almost lunchtime, I'm gonna check the kitchen to see what to eat. Oh wait, there's fried spam. :yelsick:
Big Sarge • Oct 18, 2012 5:39 pm

I am pressed for time today and the whole doggone weekend, (parties all back to back where I have to throw them and not just come, eat, drink and leave the mess behind:greenface), I'm going to only list out the foods I ate yesterday. Will explain about the food more later.

Steam gai lan, fish, pastries.

Haha....yeah, they'll kill the ecosystem if you grow them in the ditch, as they have been found to be grown by some. You can grow them in a container of some sort in your back yard. That way, they can't "escape." I just buy mine at the Asian supermarket. :)

Just plain white rice with boiled yu choy doused with spicy soy sauce. You like the pieces of chili peppers? :D I would've grabbed more but figured it wouldn't be good for my stomach, hehe.

hehe...I know how you southerners drink your iced tea.

I've been busy so I haven't been taking any food pix. There were a few dishes that would've been good to show. Anyways, here are some different types of bananas I have at home at the moment. The kids love those teeny tiny bananas. They're sweeter than the others. I like the short, fat ones. However, I can't tell when they're ripe. I bought those tiny ones when they were green. When I saw the short, fat ones, I thought they were ripe because they were totally yellow. When I bit into it, my mouth had that sticky feeling of unripe fruits. That was two days ago. This morning, I ate another one and it was still a tad under ripe. Blah. I don't think I'll buy that type again since I can't tell when they're ripe. The bigger ones in the pix are the kinds you can find at any American grocery store.
Lola Bunny • Oct 31, 2012 11:31 pm
Oh yeah, I drank this coconut two days ago. It turned out to be a dry coconut. Taking the meat out was a pain. I usually drink the young coconut, but I bought the wrong kind. DOH!

Had chicken ragout a few days back but never had a chance to post. The second picture, I'm showing you a Japanese cookie, brand Yoku Moku. What I was eating is coffee flavor. The third pix is coffee bought from Hawaii. Someone went to Hawaii for their kid's wedding and came back with gifts. Well, it wasn't given to me but the recipient doesn't like the vanilla flavor so I asked for it. :D No, I didn't take it in front of the giver, hihi.
Lola Bunny • Nov 4, 2012 7:19 pm
This afternoon a friend gave me some desserts. It is steamed cassava root eaten with coconut milk and sprinkled with coconut flakes and salt and sesame seeds. The third pix is to show you the same dessert but bought at another store. I didn't eat that one, just to show you a difference. The last pix is a warm dessert, tofu with sugar syrup cooked with ginger. This tofu is cooked to be eaten as dessert and not the other kind where you can eat it as a dish. They are cooked differently. Usually a person would use a thin metal spoon and scoop out thin layers of tofu. I was lazy, so I just used a regular soup spoon. That is why the toful is chunky and ugly. :p:

It's egg white. Eggs are spread on top. The yolk stays on top while the egg white slides down.

Below is lunch. Looks little because I took the pix after I ate, hihi. Forgot to take them before. :p: The first pix is winter melon soup. The second pix is curry chicken.

Anyways, here are today's food, lunch and dinner. I ate rice with braised mackeral and sour soup for lunch. For dinner, I had yuchoy soup and a tangerine for dessert. And just earlier, I drank some milk and a string cheese. That last tidbit info is for Sarge's sake to show that I eat a little more than just the pix I put up. :p:

This dish is grilled bbq pork with vermicelli eaten with mints, salad, bean sprouts, pickled carrots and jicama, sprinkled with crushed peanuts, and doused with mixed fish sauce. But below is a vegetarian version, hehe. So it's not pork but umm....whatever it is not meat  and mixed soy sauce. Everything else is eaten the same way.

As for the green looking food, that's sweets. I've put an extract from wiki to help explain:

Bánh da lợn or bánh da heo[1] (literally "pig skin cake") is a Vietnamese steamed layer cake made from tapioca starch, rice flour, mashed mung beans, taro, or durian, coconut milk and/or water, and sugar. It is sweet and gelatinously soft in texture, with thin (approximately 1 cm) colored layers alternating with layers of mung bean, durian, or taro filling.

I would send y'all some to try except they'll spoil by the time the package gets there. :p:

Below is cabbage salad. It normally has chicken or in this case, shrimp, to eat with the rice congee. Typically people eat chicken cabbage salad with chicken rice congee. Anyways, the salad is supposed to have its particular sauce, which I never made so I don't know off-hand what are the ingredients. I gotta go so can't look it up either. :p:

Ha....you're a silly man. Why would I want to make Twinkies? Just go out to buy some. I'm sure generic brands are out there. The last time I ate them as an adult, they were sweeter than I remembered. The only thing I never got to try was the Twinkie with chocolate filling. A little disappointed.

This dish is called "Thit Bo Nhung Dam." Literally, it translates as beef dipped in vinegar. When I googled it, one of the translation is "Beef Vinegar Hotpot." I never knew there were many variations in how to eat this dish. Basically, it's eye round beef, sliced thinly and cooked by dipping into a preferred broth. My household have always made the broth with cold water, vinegar, and a can of beer. The cooked beef is then rolled with salad, mints, and cucumber in rice paper. You then dip the roll in fermented anchovy sauce mixture (anchovy sauce, crushed pineapple, garlic, and chilli).

I will post pictures later. Gotta go now. Someone :mad2: is on my back.
orthodoc • Nov 23, 2012 6:13 pm
Sounds good ... essentially a type of fondue, but I like the idea of rolling the cooked beef with salad, mint, and cucumber in rice paper. The sauce sounds yummy also! And all of it fairly low-fat. Nice!

Sundae • Nov 27, 2012 2:47 pm
I like Adzuki beans (variation on spelling you find here)
They are very good for you. I'll have to put them on my shopping list again.

Chocolatl, I have pomegranate as a treat. Meaning I buy it as a ready to eat pack with a spoon. And I do eat the seeds too, so the only difficult part is spooning it into my mouth.
Probably breaks lots of fine dining rules ;)

Is pomegranate popular in Vietnamese cuisine?
My Indian/ Pakistani friends adored it, it was a standard in desserts and cordial. Shudder.
Their cultural version of sweet is far too sweet for me. Actually add Middle Eastern to that. I may add more other regions of the world after a good think. Me, I like a cheeseboard after a meal.

Sorry if your Mum just happened to pick it up at the market as my Mum would - I know so little of Far East culture I am always hungry to learn. See what I did there?

One of the boys in class 2a brought in some Indian sweets for a lesson on celebrations in religion (Diwali in his case). I joked that I was missing out, working in Key Stage 2 in the afternoons. He's such a beautiful, solemn little boy with huge eyes and a smile that changes his face - when he shows it. "Oh, Mrs M can save one for you I'm sure" he assured me. I told him kindly that I was just joking, and I'd rather his classmates enjoyed them. Well it was the truth in a gentle way.

Hmm....I don't know. :p: It is expensive though. I saw it at the grocery for $4 each. This lady I know got a box at Costco and if you calculate it, each fruit rounds out only to $2. So I asked her if I can buy just one off her because I thought my mom likes the fruit. Turns out my mom said she doesn't care for the fruit. That's why I had to open the fruit myself. I don't eat the seeds so it's a bit annoying to spit them out.

Chocolat: I know what you mean by patience. It was time-consuming to open up the fruit. And dirty too. I changed into a shirt that I can bleach because it would be inevitable that red juice would squirt on you. I would just rather drink the juice. :D

Now, I better go pick up the pomelo someone gave me last night. I forgot it there when went home. She told me it was the perfect blend of sweet and tartness. :D

Ahh...yes. The next picture is Azuki red beans sweet soup. (post for you, Sundae :)) I'll explain what "sweet soup" is for those who don't know later this afternoon.

Lola Bunny • Dec 7, 2012 7:56 pm
Hmm...I don't think that's rice vermicelli. Here's an example of the noodle I grabbed from the net.
Lola Bunny • Dec 7, 2012 7:59 pm
I just grabbed this from the net. The Viet name for the noodle is "hu tieu."

Hu Tieu The Noodles (Bánh Hủ Tiếu)

There is really only one kind of noodle that is called hu tieu noodle. Once cooked, it is the chewy, clear and somewhat sticky kind that is made of tapioca, not rice. On a shelf in a food market, at first glance it may look like banh pho noodle, just not as white in color, or maybe a thicker bún (vermicelli.) But unless it is specifically labeled “Hủ Tiếu,” it isn’t. Like banh pho noodles and bun, bánh hủ tiếu noodles can be purchase dry or fresh.

There's a communal kitchen where there's a different person cook each day. I come to pick up my food each day. A Vietnamese salad....grapefruit with dried shrimp and sauce. It's a new dish from Vietnam. A friend who travels back and forth made this dish for us to try. At first I was, " ewwwww......I am not eating that." After some coaxing, I gave it a shot. It was surprisingly good. :D

Sorry, it was meant as a joke. Or at least a jokey reference to the fact that Anericans ordering prawns over here are very surprised to be served with prawns.

It's like biscuits or chips - same words, different food.

UK shrimp are tiny and brown and only satisfying in enormous quantities. Kinda like whales feel about krill I guess.
UK prawns are pink when cooked, larger and fleshier, as in your photo.

No, I was trying to starve myself. Joking aside, I've been on a diet, eating salads and rice paper rolls. Nothing mouth watering to see. Let me upload an example of my rice paper rolls. I would put whatever food rolled with salad. Yesterday, I rolled with braise fish. This morning I rolled with fried tofu. The kitchen made vegetarian shaking beef dish. I left that for my mom to eat because I'm cutting rice and bread the next two weeks.

Hey, hang on - I thought you guys were all Imperial?

Or are you bi-lingual like us? Nature programmes tend to use km for example, but all cars and signposts are in miles.

Cookery books still have measurements in g and oz, but only show C or gas mark for temperature. Only quite old ones (or American ones) use F. No new cookers are sold with F markings.

Markets are the last bastion of oz. I buy my lychees by the lb.
Griff • Feb 3, 2013 9:42 am
Most of us are not bi-lingual but we've been teaching kids two systems of measurement since the seventies... I'd rather speak Italian.
Sundae • Feb 3, 2013 10:40 am
I am of '70s vintage.
We spoke Imperial at home and Metric in school.

I ended up being unable to estimate any measurement apart from a metre or a mile.
My bro - 4 years later - was better integrated.

Personally I think we should make our minds up and simply go for metric. None of our school rulers have inches on, so why do we still still calculate distances in miles?

I don't know why dried fish are rare in this country. And when I say rare I mean unheard of in terms of national cuisine. We're a pretty chilly island nation though, perhaps drying has never really been necessary.

Jellied, yes, fried yes, frozen (these days) yes.

Don't know what's a serving size is. My sister-in-law bought some from the grocery store and lay them on a plate. It's been a while so I can't imagine it now. She filled a 9 in. paper plate. How much a person eats really depends on a person, I guess.

Yeah, maybe. I was wondering what a restaurant would serve.
Lola Bunny • Mar 10, 2013 4:55 pm
To be frank, I'm not really sure. I usually don't eat out, much less a sushi place. Once a year, someone we know comes to visit and he'd treat us out. I've only eaten at a sushi restaurant twice so far in my life. I usually buy my sushi at the grocery store when I want to eat some. I think the serving size depends on what you order too? A dish, a boat, bento box? The last place I went to is called Ra Sushi. You can check out the website; they have pictures. Hmm....looking back at my pix, I think I mentioned the dessert dish we ordered had only 6 pcs. Perhaps a sushi dish had around there too.

Those things are yummy! Hahahaha ha......I'm kidding. Did I make anyone cringe? :P Long ago when I first started to eat vegetarian, I ate these imitation stuffs. Some were okay, some weren't so tasty. None tasted like the meat/seafood counterpart though. Of course, I wasn't looking for imitation meat/seafood; I was looking for variety. Consequently, I didn't care for the taste nor were they healthy to eat. I still like my veggie burgers and hotdogs though. :D

I was on a budget (really, what a surprise?!) and it wasn't any cheaper than real duck. I bought neither. That might have been in the days before Jesus gave me an oven.

Even if I had all the money in the world I doubt I'd buy it now. I seem to remember it being very high in fat, for a start.

For all Lola's amazing sweetness, I sense the iron thumb-gouging of a Tarantino heroine beneath.

I'm happy to travel cross-country with her. Especially to Wolf's Hide-out in the case of an apocalypse, zombie or otherwise. But wrestling her? No. I'd end up on the compost heap with leftover noodles.

Lost my post, so here I go again in a shorter version. I went to a wedding reception tonite. thought I'd give you guys a look at what a typical Vietnamese wedding menu looks like. We were at a Chinese restaurant tonite though, and the food was not good. I'll explain more tomorrow. Here are the menu and food pix. I didn't take a pix of the first two dishes, which are the soup and the cold cuts.

Menu. They served soup then cold cuts. Pity I didn't take a pix of this dish cuz it was interesting.

I love pineapple! I could eat an entire one if they didn't make your tongue hurt
Clodfobble • Jun 20, 2013 8:31 am
Fun fact: pineapple makes your tongue burn not because it's acidic (many foods are,) but because it contains tons of a digestive enzyme called bromelain. This means that eating fresh pineapple with your meal, especially the core, will help you digest the rest of your meal. But it also means that while it's in your mouth, before it gets to the protective layer of mucus in your stomach, it is literally digesting your own flesh.
Chocolatl • Jun 20, 2013 8:49 am

Okay I snipped that. But I didn't alter the meaning.
Thank you for the info!
I always thought I was weirdorama because fresh pineapple hurt the corners of my mouth. They were obviously the most sensitive parts; I stopped when it started hurting.

I'd still be tempted by really fresh pineapple though. I ate it every day in Sri Lanka and it was like going from black and white TV to colour.

Lola, you are a 21st century woman. Some of us do have attachment issues.

Thanks once again for the photos. Always love them.

My ex loved fried ice-cream (we could only get it at a Mexican chain restaurant.)
I can say it's one of many high-fat-sweet-treats I couldn't abide.

But I admit, no patting myself on the back here.
Whenever we went to a good English restaurant (not an oxymoron) I'd order the cheeseboard instead of dessert and eat until cheese came out of my eyes and ears.

Sundae • Jul 8, 2013 4:33 am
Just a play on words.
You have attachment problems ie attaching/ deleting photos.

We live in a time when women don't necessarily want to "settle down" ie they have issues with getting too attached to people. Attachment issues for women who live in the 21st century.
Lola Bunny • Jul 10, 2013 6:08 pm

If we were born in another century we'd have been married off regardless and just have to make the best of it.

As for baloch gola, it was my first time eating an Indian dessert. It's similar to other south Asian shaved ice dessert, like the one in the previous page with the green tea ice cream, except this one doesn't have ice cream. Dana, did your grandmother put syrup and condense milk into the shaved ice and top with fruits too? Or how did she make it? Ohhh goodness, I don't rightly recall. I just remember something that tasted and had a texture something like you just decribed.

I know she used quite a lot of milk in her sweet making. She used to boil it down to a kind of mush. Wouldn't surprise me at all if some condensed milk hadn't made it in there. I remember it being very sweet. Not sure whether there was golden syrup, but hers was more likely to be a recipe from India rather than Taiwan, so probably.

Call me a nutter if you like but when I'm making a fruit salad I add a bit garam masala or even standard curry powder.
as long as you don't overdo it and leave it to sit a couple of hours it takes on a lovely spiced flavour (like mulled wine) and doesn't taste "curry" at all.
really good if you've got some ripe banana in there too.

I commend it to the house.

mind you I like tomatoes, sweet peppers and cucumber in my fruit salads as well

(I'll get me coat,....)

Sounds rather interesting and might be quite good. I wouldn't mind trying it, if you make it for me. :D I may make it taste nasty. I've tried Indian snacks(nuts, cereal, chips, etc) where they add Indians spices. They were really good.

For you Buster. Recipe grabbed from Allrecipes.com:

Ingredients

Original recipe makes 3 servings

18 fresh okra pods, sliced 1/3 inch thick
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons kosher salt, or to taste
2 teaspoons black pepper, or to taste

Directions

Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
Arrange the okra slices in one layer on a foil lined cookie sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
busterb • Jan 18, 2014 7:28 pm
Thanks. I looked at a few, one called for some millet flour. WTF. Wonder if frozen okra would work?
Lola Bunny • Jan 18, 2014 11:16 pm
I googled it and found a blog where a woman roast frozen okra, no thawing necessary. She did say that to bake it longer, like 25-30 minutes.
Clodfobble • Jan 19, 2014 7:53 am
Any frozen vegetable is going to come out mushier than if you roast it fresh. The freezing breaks down the cell walls. But maybe with Buster's teeth issues, softer is better. :)

Anyways, I found a bunch of recipes I'd like to try out. She's okay with me trying the chicken and fish recipes but when I tried to get ingredients to make desserts, she discouraged me. The woman actually stopped me from buying Disaronno??!!?? Seriously???? :D

heheheh.....I didn't have enough cash at the moment and didn't want to use the credit card (my sister just paid it off for me :p:). I'll probably buy it when my wallet fattens a bit. By the way, the amarreto is to make cake. Of course, I can also enjoy the leftover. :D

Zucotto Pudding

I was at Home Depot the other day and Spec's Liquor is in the same shopping center. I juuuust had to stop in. I checked out their amaretto selection and found something cheap. I figured it's for baking, so I may not need to spring for something that cost 3X as much. Anyways, here's the preparation for it. The finished product is not ready to eat until it's been in the fridge for 24-48 hrs.
Lola Bunny • Mar 4, 2014 2:01 pm
Ingredients, less riccota cheese, which I forgot in the fridge.

Lady fingers soaked wih amaretto

Taking a sip. Made me wonder if I should've put out more money cuz there's a lot leftover.

Ricotta mixture, sadly I grabbed the low fat one. I hope it'll taste ok.

All packed and wrapped. Gonna put a plate and something heavy on it then off it goes into the refrigerator.

I'm missing something here, you smooshed up a bunch of stuff, cookies, nuts, booze, chocolate, ricotta, and refrigerated it. That's all? It looks like it was baked?
Lola Bunny • Mar 7, 2014 6:39 pm
Not baked, just refrigerated. I found some recipes that call for whip cream rather than ricotta, but I decided to use ricotta instead.

The portions at Ihop are huge! A friend of mine is sleeping with my mom at night until she is well enough to move around safely by herself. So, this morning my sister and I took her out to breakfast. She choose Ihop again because we wanted to go someplace near home. I ordered chicken fajita omelet. It was humongous. I had to make myself eat half so I wouldn't have too much leftover. I guess I'll be eating that for lunch too. Anyways, I forgot to take pix today. :p:

My sister saw a recipe for banana pancake, consisting of only bananas and eggs. Cool, potassium and protein, she thought. She made it and instantly hated it because it was sweet. Uh...okay. Banana = sweet. I told her it would taste better with whip cream, strawberries, and chocolate. She went out and got the ingredients. Yeah, 2 1/2 tbsp is a lot. I didn't use that much though because I didn't have that much carrots. I like how you make it better. Maybe it's the vinegar cider that made difficult to eat. Anyways, I think I'll stick to munching on raw carrots from now on since I don't really care for carrots much.

xoxoxoBruce;928495 wrote:

I gave my nephew a tiny bit of carrots to try. He'll try a tiny bit of anything for the first time. (I've trained him well....or should I say I've "put the fear of God in him," so he'll eat anything I give him. :D I put the phrase in quotes because that's what my sister said and my nephew agreed. Anyways, he immediately made this face ever so slightly. I asked if it's okay or not. When he wouldn't answer, I told him I'm going to make him eat it because I didn't receive an answer. LOL....He immediately said, or he might've have said it didn't taste so good but I swear I heard him say I don't feel so good after that first bite. So, no carrots for him. However, he ate the chicken. :D
Sundae • May 23, 2015 4:42 am
I used to glaze carrots with honey.
But then I wasn't going for the speedy version - I'd roast them, which brings out their inner sweetness anyway.

Good for you for trying something different, Bunny.

I know, right? I think maybe it's not the kimchi itself but the recipe I used. It calls for 1/2 kimchi juice 1/2 water. I think that diluted the flavor. I mistakenly think it's the kimchi's fault. Frankly, the older the kimchi, the better kimchi fried rice would taste. Anyways, the fried rice tasted better the next day. :)

After my niece's 5th grade graduation ceremony, we took her out to lunch. These are the food we, not the kid, ate. [emoji4] The first 2 dishes are Singaporean noodle and clams. The next 2 are sauteed bean leaf and calamari. The last dish is crab.

I'm guessing the stall at Leeds Food Festival was very much Anglicised, as I didn't see any of the yummy dishes you photograph for us. I've still yet to eat Vietnamese food (as opposed to Vietnamese-style food), but this wasn't the right place to start.

The man leaving the stall apologised to me for getting in the way of my photo.
Bless him, it's his stall!

I know, right? My cousin posted on FB pix of his son's graduation ceremony from PRE-K. Yes, you read that right. And his daughter had a cap and gown graduation ceremony from kindergarten.

Sundae: We went to a Chinese Vietnamese restaurant, so it was a blend and not pure Vietnamese food. As for stalls, you're more likely to get "ba le" (baguette) sandwiches, egg rolls, springrolls, and other finger and "fast food" style food.

Lazy? I labored to make it that nice!

I only found your comment funny (and my reply was written with humor in mind, not as an actual insult) because a great deal of British cuisine (and I use that term loosely, very loosely) looks to have been eaten by a cat, yakked up by said cat, then that cat yak eaten by a badger, and then shit onto a plate. Seasoned with coarsely ground thistles and pine cone shavings.

That's the lazy version of that comment.

Don't ever expect much from me, you'll only be disappointed. It's what I do, afterall, disappoint.

I'm sorry if you were actually offended by that, Sundae. It was not my intention to insult.
Sundae • Jun 14, 2015 5:30 pm
I don't know why I suddenly decided to be all offended by what was a comment made in jest. Perhaps it was a backwash of guilt for really being quite rude about a photo Lola was kind enough to share publicly.

I defend American eating habits and food so often myself, when people who have never even been to America make fun about all Americans being fat, lazy, stupid and eating crap food all day every day. It's so obviously not true, but the poor souls who trot it out are just dumb enough to believe it.

I still think that British cuisine can be held up against some of the finest in the world, but there was no reason for me to get pissy about it.

So my apologies to Lola, and to you Grav.
Hey, at least you get to keep your Great Offender title ;)

It was the office's one year anniversary. She is generous to her employees. She gives us free eye exams and whatever we buy, i.e. glasses, contact lenses, etc., she let us get it at her price. Most places just give their employees discounts. The doc took the whole office to dinner (just 4 of us, plus my sister and her son) and one of the workers is a 300 lbs. (so he claims even though the other girls think he's heavier) man. He ordered an entree that comes with a 10 oz steak, a humongous lobster tail, and mash potatoes. Sundae, I'm sure you would eat less than that. :p:

No, glasses don't cost $575 because sometimes an optometrist decides to be generous to her employees and treat them to a nice restaurant once a year. In this instance, just this once because we don't know if she'll do that again next year being our office just only celebrated its 1 year anniversary. Glasses can cost up that much whether the doctor decides to share the money with his/her employees are not. I'm just lucky I have a very nice employer who treats her employees well. Actually, she's a very nice lady. When I asked her to help Buster who's a vet, she agreed right away without asking any questions. When a patient seems not have much money, she gives him/her discounts. More and more patients are using vision insurance. Contrary to what many of us may think, the insurance companies don't pay the doctors the difference of the what patients don't pay. Patients pay insurances a premium each month, so they only have to pay a small amount of copay when they go to the optometrist. When the office files a claim for this, we are only reimbursed a fraction of what we charge for services. I am not saying optometrists (doctors) are poor. I'm merely saying they aren't highway robbers. Why are Walmart and etc. places charge less for their glasses? Cheaper frames and lesser quality lens.

OK That was a joke.

The thing I really wonder is: Why does this cost $599, it has image stabilization motors, automatic focus, 13 groups of 17 elements (that's individual lenses) all multi-coated to prevent glare and other optical distortions, all made from the highest quality optical glass, it has a motorized zoom, is sealed against dust, and it is amazingly accurate even after years of handling and operation, but two single lenses made of polycarbonate with a non glare coating, and a frame cost at least $375 online and close to twice that at an optometrist. It's not economy of scale, Canon has just recently only made its 50 millionth lens. It's not just labor. Unless there is a 1000% markup the wholesale cost for the lenses must be astronomical.

A camera lens, significantly more complex, is a luxury and the market won't bear an extraordinary cost. Eyeglasses on the other hand are essential to people who need them and, well, tough shit if you need them and don't have them.

The Luxotica cartel is probably behind this, I'm not blaming optometrists, they are essentially the middlemen, but what would the glasses cost if the lenses were only five bucks?

There are non name brand lenses that are nearly as good as Canons and Nikons- most people can't tell the difference. There are name brand frames and knock offs the relative price difference remains.
BigV • Jul 14, 2015 5:47 pm
One reason is that the camera is the same design, 10,000 times. Glasses are not like that, they're individually fitted, both for frames, which are a balance of cosmetic and functional, and the lenses which are all function, but not necessarily the same from one production unit to the next, unlike the camera.
Undertoad • Jul 14, 2015 8:19 pm

Give Lola the stink-eye? They'd have to be made of stink to do that.
What Lola wants, Lola gets :)

Sharing dishes over here is considered quite reasonable and normal. But then I suppose tips make up a smaller part of the waiting staff's wages over here, so it's really none of their business how much you order or who eats it.

Mum and I would often share a starter because I had a smaller appetite and she wanted room to finish on a dessert.

No, and they're more than happy to let you do it. Some places will split the entree into two plates for you. However, some places WILL add an extra charge for that. Therefore, I usually ask if they charge extra for splitting the dish. If they say no, then I say okay. Otherwise, I would say, NO NEED! Hehehehe.....But yeah, we just ask for a plain plate and we split it ourselves.

black stuff -- seaweed

noodles -- that's bean sprout

??? next to noodles -- that's the noodle, ramen

tomato sauce and cheese -- nopes. that's the broth, yummy and spicy, don't know what it's made of. I couldn't tell the taste even after eating it. That's why I don't cook well. And even if I did have a vague idea, I forgot by now. :p:

True dat. He doesn't really have veggies in his meals. I once bought a bag of salad and ended up eating it most of it myself. It's not that he doesn't eat junk food. It's just that he doesn't care for the same junk as I do.

In all honesty, I don't blame him, sweet potatoes are gross, they're just generally palatable to people who like potatoes.

The answer, clearly, is to batter and deep-fry everything. Start with onion rings, then move up to fried cauliflower, fried okra, fried carrot sticks, fried Brussels sprouts...
Sundae • Jan 18, 2016 9:05 am
I LOVE sweet potatoes!
Can't have them now as I can't cook in my kitchen. But even when my life was normal it was tricky to have a normal sized portion as I didn't know anyone else who loved them too.

Sold Mum on sweet potato crisps (chips) but you need to watch them as they catch fire very quickly. Even got her occasionally eating sweet potato oven-baked chips (fries.)
Now mash though, never mash. But in our house we didn't do the whole cream and butter thing to mash. Just a bit of vinegar.

Can't afford the electricity. Also it fronts onto a reasonably busy junction, so when things are bad in my head, it makes me paranoid. Or do I mean when I'm paranoid it makes it bad? Every car horn, every slamming door, every coach pulling up. All coming to get me.

Also it's filthy, I have no idea where to start with the cleaning, I have no unused crockery or cutlery and I hate the place.

Still like cooking.
Just not there.

I'm sorry that you don't like your kitchen. Is there any other place that is affordable that you can move to?

I like sweet potatoes. :D

Yesterday, we stopped by a restaurant for lunch. Ended up ordering their special: chicken tenders on open bun with chili. Was really yummy but I tried to finish everything (except for fries) and overate. I still wasn't really hungry at dinnertime, so I made salad for us both because Bruce had to go to a meeting at work.

So I've cooked a few times, but I can't upload the pictures to prove it. Maybe I'll remember to post them up when I have access to internet other than my phone. :-P
