What are You Watching on Netflix Instant/Amazon Prime/orwhateverotherinstreaming

wolf • Aug 23, 2012 12:25 pm
Decided to start a thread on this because it's where I'm doing most of my viewing lately, and while most of the content is available on DVD it isn't actually on DVD so ...

Couple of recent picks:

Sound and Fury - two brothers, one deaf, one hearing, each with a deaf child, struggle with the decision over cochlear implants. Kind of interesting, and says a lot about deaf culture.

Inheritance - documentary about Amon Goeth's daughter (yeah, the one Ralph Fiennes plays in Schindler's List).

24 - I just started watching this. I never watched this while it was on, which is a darn shame. It's pretty good. I think I have a couple plot points figured out (I'm on hour 5), but I'm probably completely wrong.
Happy Monkey • Aug 23, 2012 2:39 pm
I really liked the first season of 24, except for one silly bit. The other seasons were OK, but I feel I may have been watching just out of inertia.

I went to the Boy Scout camp whose T-shirt Jack's daughter adapted for her use.
Pico and ME • Aug 23, 2012 2:49 pm
Comcasts Streampix is really faux-streaming, but....I've started at the beginning of Damages with with Glenn Close. It has a gimmicky aspect to it with the flashbacks and forwards going on (just like the Firm, which I soon grew tired of), but Im enjoying it so far.

Goshen!

I spent half a week at Goshen in June. I left mid-way through the week and left my son there, and two days later he spent the night in the dining hall after the derecho tore through and toppled a couple bonfires and blew down many of the tents.
Happy Monkey • Aug 23, 2012 3:35 pm
I went there as a Scout one week one summer, for Scout leadership training one week another summer, AS Scout leadership training two weeks the next summer, and on staff for 8 weeks a few years later.

Good times...

Well, I liked being on staff at least.
glatt • Aug 23, 2012 3:43 pm
I had a blast for my half a week.

I recently finished the 2 season run of the old NBC series "Life" (on Hulu), about a cop who gets framed for a triple murder, is sentenced to life in prison, gets out on new evidence sues the city for $100,000,000, and gets his job back with backpay and promotion to detective. Loved it.

RFN, I'm watching "John Doe", about a guy who wakes up naked on an island off Seattle, knowing everything about everything, except who he is. Meh, take it or leave it.

Recently watched "God Bless America" on Netflix. Let me say now: Netflix is a pain in the ass. I almost gave up trying to get it to work on my 'puter. Gotta have Silverlight to watch anything.

Back to "God Bless America"; ƒucking loved this movie. First, it has one of my favorite actors as the star/protagonist, Joel Murray. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. This movie made so many good points about what we (the American public) have become, that I stopped counting at 17. No shit.

Spoiler alert: These are the types of people the guy thinks needs to be shot:

People who take up two parking spaces
People who talk in theaters during movies
People who say 'Namaste'
People who high five
Spoiled brats
People who pound energy drinks all day

Frank: I am offended. Not because I got a problem with bitter, predictible, whining millionaire disc jockeys complaining about celebrities or how tough their life is, while I live in an apartment with paper-thin walls next to a couple of Neanderthals who, instead of a baby, decided to give birth to some kind of nocturnal civil defense air raid siren that goes off every fucking night like it's Pearl Harbor.

I hate that baby. I hate his stupid, fat face.

Frank: [On the air] My name is Frank. That's not important. The important question is: who are you? America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest and the loudest. We no longer have any common sense of decency. No sense of shame. There is no right and wrong. The worst qualities in people are looked up to and celebrated. Lying and spreading fear is fine as long as you make money doing it. We've become a nation of slogan-saying, bile-spewing hatemongers. We've lost our kindness. We've lost our soul. What have we become? We take the weakest in our society, we hold them up to be ridiculed, laughed at for our sport and entertainment. Laughed at to the point, where they would literally rather kill themselves than live with us anymore.
Gravdigr • Aug 23, 2012 5:09 pm
Really, I'm surprised someone hasn't went on a shooting spree, and cited this movie as their motivation.
Gravdigr • Aug 23, 2012 5:13 pm
Also watched "Seraphim Falls" w/Pierce Brosnan & Liam Neeson, on YouTube Movies.

Loved it.

I have a couple of questions regarding this flick, if anyone else has seen it.
Pico and ME • Aug 23, 2012 5:14 pm
I saw it , but it was a while ago...
Gravdigr • Aug 23, 2012 5:40 pm
OK, one question then. The one that's bothering me:

Spoiler Alert

Highlight for the question;

At the end of the flick, Anjelica Huston shows up in the desert, from out of nowhere, and trades Brosnan's character his horse for one bullet. She later shows up again, again from out of nowhere, and trades Neeson's character his water, for one bullet.

Was she God, Satan, one of their angels, or Death? Or, what?!

Thanks in advance.

That's about all I watch these days, other than sports.

I'm really into Grimm (Hulu) and Warehouse 13 (Netflix) and have enjoyed several other series. I'll have to think hard to pull out names tho.

I'm watching the downfall of human civilization as we know it.

EDIT: My mistake, that's the window, not the TV.

EDIT2: OK, OK. I'm meaning to watch "Out of Egypt." I'm also working my way through "That Mitchell and Webb Look" and Peepshow (which I'm kind of lukewarm on, in spite of how much I like Mitchell and Webb).

Last weekend we watched Office Space; it was Mrs. Dallas' first time seeing it.

Started watching Wilfred last night.

It's an American retooling of an Australian series that seems to be based on loosely the same concept, but is ultimately very different, like the UK vs. US versions of Being Human. The same Australian actor plays Wilfred in the American series.

Elijah Wood is a suicidal (possibly manic depressive) guy, who sees his neighbor's dog Wilfred as a man in a dog costume. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but there were no wacky hijinks, just a twisted psychological comedy about a guy trying to figure out how (and whether) to put his life back together. Really enjoying it so far.
Gravdigr • Aug 27, 2012 5:58 pm
The Walking Dead, on Netflix.

I'm already beginning to wonder (two episodes in) if this isn't going to be a long, drawn out 'every-gimmick-you've-ever-seen-in-a-zombie-flick-stretched-out-over-multiple-seasons-type thing.

And don't even get me started on Netflix's video quality, which is The Suck.
Clodfobble • Aug 27, 2012 6:23 pm
The video quality adjusts based on your internet speed. As soon as you can buffer more, it will stream a sharper image.
BrianR • Aug 28, 2012 9:04 am

Also, Hulu's quality doesn't seem to suffer nearly as much.

Netflix is a goldmine of outdated TV series. Since Mrs. Z and I missed the last twenty years or so, we have been having fun catching up. Lately, it's been Lie to Me and White Collar.

Mrs. Z wasn't interested, but I watched the whole Firefly series a couple of weeks ago. I don't understand why that didn't go over better.

Currently watching Prison Break.

Just finished Deadwood (loved it!)

Also on my to-do list (some to just get current): Six Feet Under, Pretty Little Liars, Mad Men, Sopranos, Entourage and Fringe.

Already watched:

24
Oz
The Wire
La Femme Nikita
True Blood
Sons of Anarchy

and others.

Stormie, didn't you just love Timothy Olyphant in Deadwood? I love him in Justified too. And I just found out that he is in season 2 of Damages.

Apparitions (British series about an exorcist)
Triumph at Carville (documentary about the leprosarium)
House of Numbers (documentary about HIV/AIDS largely driven by the HIV doesn't cause AIDS crowd's opinions)
Not Quite Hollywood (documentary on Aussie exploitation films)
Nightmares in Red, White and Blue (American Horror Films retrospective)
The History Channel: Video Games, Behind the Fun (I played an awful lot of them)
Forgiving Doctor Mengele
Cropsey (documentary about child abduction/murders in Staten Island)
S&MAN (documentary about independent horror filmmaking. Really bad independent film making, like handheld digital camera bad)
The Resurrected (adaptation of HP Lovecraft's Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Very B horror)
Hey Boo, Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird
Horsemen (completely awful. Dennis Quaid has not aged well)
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (surprisingly good)

I'm at my brother's house. Complete with Netflix. So I've watched a few episodes of The United States of Tara. I love Toni Collette and it's a great premise but I just don't like it that much. I can't stand any of the characters, even the 'meant to be funny' alters. Usually even the most vile characters elicit some sort of empathetic response in me, but I can't even stand the kids in this one.

Watched a few episodes of Arrested Development. Yeah, never saw it before. I like it, it's pretty funny.

Watched a few episodes of Portlandia. There are parts I hate and parts that I find really funny. It's so weird to me that the 90s are retro now. It can't be that long ago can it? I was a young adult. Oh yeah, that was that long ago.

Re-watched The Talented Mr Ripley. I'd forgotten a lot about it. I like it. It made me think, though, that I know of two movies where part of the plot is that one of the main characters bear a small resemblance to Jude Law's character. This one with the passport and Matt Damon, and the other one being Gattaca with the ID and Ethan Hawke. None of them really look anything alike. Just an observation.
Griff • Aug 19, 2014 8:40 am
My youngest thinks Portlandia is hilarious. There was a time in the '90s when I felt like I was pretty cool, so I find it not so funny.

The women folk like Orange is the new Black if you have not checked it out yet. I started watching Arrow a while back but the episodes seem kind of up and down in quality.

I watched the entire series on Netflix. I also didn't like any of the characters, except for Patton Oswald's. He was likeable. There were some fun parts to that show, but mostly it didn't go anywhere and then the ending was so forgettable I couldn't tell you how it was resolved.

I thought about trying O is the New B, maybe tonight. I started the book but never finished it.

I'm surprised at how many series there are, that seem to be under the new umbrella of 'innovative television.' I have the series that I love, some old school, some newer (like Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Oz, Walking Dead, The Wire, Mad Men, and right now Nurse Jackie) but now there seems to be some saturation, and the quality isn't always that good. There's something for everyone though.

Portlandia: there was a really funny segment where the main actor guy is a bike rider with a chin beard. He goes by his favorite bar and through the window sees some yuppie-looking guy and gets all mad "That kind of guy is in there? This bar is so OVER!" Then he keeps seeing this guy doing things he himself likes to do and keeps declaring things 'so OVER!" After a series of such happenings we see the formerly yuppie guy now on a bike with a chin beard riding past a bar where the previously bike-riding chin beard guy is sitting at the bar, on a cell phone discussing business, and very yuppie-like...and the new hipster declares "That kind of guy is in there? This bar is so OVER."

That was pretty clever. Other parts not so much. Can't stand the ones with the girl playing the guy and vice versa. Very annoying. The shopkeeper couple are annoying, though Steve Buscemi's cameo was funny. The cameos are often pretty good (Kyle MacLachlan as the mayor, for instance.)

OH yeah, he had just started making more appearances. I DID like him. I can't even stand the psychiatrist. Just, awful.

I second Orange is the New Black, I've enjoyed that quite a bit.

Right now I'm clenching my teeth waiting for the latest seasons to drop into streaming for The League (I think you would love this one, infi, with your fantasy football prowess) and The Walking Dead.

Watched a little of White Collar. I think the wife of fbi guy's wife looks a little like wonder woman, Linda carter. I think is the name.
infinite monkey • Aug 21, 2014 10:01 am
I saw some of Orange is the New Black. I like it. I mostly like the flashbacks to what other prisoners did to get in there. I find those scenes to be subtle...I don't know if the backstory becomes more clear or if we are just going to have the hints...but either way I like the way they do it: they don't just hand it to you on a platter.

I tried The League and it may have been another instance of I wasn't in the right mood, but I couldn't get into it. It was late. I may try again.

But I only have a few more days to try to finish the ones I have liked. Let me ask a question: I am sick of my cable bill going up and up. I haven't been watching regular TV at my house. I have been purchasing DVDs of series. Can one get Netflix without having cable? Like, if I kept Bugs Bunny wireless but dropped all TV service, could I get netflix?

The League made me remember a show I've always wondered about: Friday Night Lights. Wow. It's about one of the best HS football teams in Texas (no small deal there) and so far I LOVE it. It has some great football moments, along with incredible acting. It really shows the pressures of the coach and the players, from the whole town, and the tolls such expectations can have.

It had me at hello. If you like football you will love this show.

Yes, but you will need a box that can accept the internet signal and put it on your TV. A Playstation 3 can do it, for example, or a Roku. Or get a Chromecast and you could do not just Netflix on your TV, but also YouTube and whatever other internetty things you wanted.
Beest • Aug 21, 2014 12:56 pm
We bought a Sony Blueray player that even had a netflix button on the remote, it can access all kinds of online content through built in apps, youtube, espn etc. look out for SMART devices. Even old style wii can do it (not full HD, fine). maybe you can pick one up for a song, or find someone who doesn't use theirs anymore.
glatt • Aug 21, 2014 1:18 pm
I bet a used wii or a new Chromecast would be your cheapest options.

I love my Roku though. It recently added a youtube channel, and it's so cool. You can find a video on youtube on your youtube phone app and then send it to the Roku to watch on the TV to share with everyone. Just yesterday we were sitting around, taking turns, finding youtube videos on our devices and sending them to the tv. Good for chuckles. Somebody has a lame video up there, and you send a new one to interrupt theirs.

Oh yeah! I do have a blu-ray player and it does have a netflix button. I'd never considered purchasing netflix before so I haven't really messed around with it. Plus, I'm a technological whiz...for things 20 years ago. Today I can barely figure out my phone.

the trick there is to make sure your BR player can reach the internet in your house. there needs to be a cable or a wireless connection for it. I bought a couple BR players for Twil and thought the internet connectivity would be a good thing. BUT. the boxes only accept a Sony wireless adapter, so, no joy. I'm not paying 2x the cost of the BR player for a freakin wireless network interface card, f*ck that. and the effort to string cables to those locations was not worth it. It was far, far easier to get her a couple Roku boxes, which get along fine with the wireless connections that she already had, and netflix and others were all there for us.

I fired the cable company many years ago and I have not missed it ONE SINGLE BIT. The stuff that I thought I would miss, some premium (!) channels like Discovery Channel, etc., pffft. They were fun, but there's way, way, way more stuff that is just as interesting or more so to fill the gap.

Fire the cable company. You'll adapt. You'll have more money, too.

Of course.

If your cable company provides your internet access, then, no. You would be relegated to the Netflix DVD-mailing service.

You'll need an internet connection of some sort to keep watching Netflix.

So I got myself addicted to Elementary...

First time I tried it I wasn't mega impressed. The sober companion thing seemd a bit of a forced set up. But - I was just coming off a Sherlock jag, and it just didn't hit my buttons. Then about two and a half weeks ago I started watching the first series - picked up where I lelft off at ep3.

Across two weeks I watched series one. Then yesterday and today I've been ill (throat, chest, temperature etc) so have been wrapped in a blanket, drinking lemsip and watching Elementary - I've watched half of series two :P

loving it. Elementary that is. The throat and chest and sneezing nonsense not so much.

I've powered through the first 4 seasons of the Dr. Who re-launch. I was sorry to see Tennant go and expected I'd hate Matt Smith, but he's not bad. Amy Pond is nice but a bit young. Not sure anyone can replace Rose Tyler.
DanaC • Feb 6, 2015 6:45 pm
There's a real tonal shift with Smith. His first couple of series have a kind of dark fairytale feel to them. The thing about Amy is that to all intents and purposes the Doctor's always been in her life. From the little girl, to much later.

Allows room for some interesting stories and new relationships. There's something almost paternal in the Doctor's relationship with Amy.

Out of interest, how far along Smith's run are you?

Ahhh - yes you need to watch that :P

What youmay or may not have picked up on isthat as well as a new Doctor, the Smith era brought in a new showrunner - Russell T Davies, who brought the showback and stayed as showrunner through Ecclestone and Tennant handed over to Stephen Moffatt (writer of some ofthe best eps ofthe Tennant era) as showrunner and head writer. That's why it has a differen feel to it and a different narrative style.

Yeah, Lamp...Hill Street Blues was the first of that huge genre. Nice series.

I just watched Almost Famous. Always late to the party. It's a nice movie. I can finally see why it is so popular and rated highly.

Just started going through 6+ years of Parks and Recreation. This is a funny show, I wonder if it ever caught on. ;)

The thing that makes it special though is not the humor, it's the sincerity. They could have made every character a caricature and had another perfectly respectable Office or Brooklyn 99 on their hands, but they keep drawing it back to honest reactions instead of silliness. An excellent show says I, almost a decade late.

Movies about robots. Both non Hollywood, not action movies, involve a lot of psychology of fear of the intelligent machines being created and trying to remain in control.

"The Machine", British movie, set in the UK not especially far in the future or different reality, about a guy who makes the first fully intelligent robot as part of a military program.

Automata seems to be from a Bulgarian studio, set in the future wher mankind is all but wiped out and on it's last legs. Robots were built to help us but they failed .

Both great films

Not about robots, not sure wheter it's great or awful

Snowpiercer After cocking up an attempt to reverse global warming the whole world freezes and everybody dies. Except for the passengers on a train which travels perpetually on a world spanning track which it takes one year to circumnavigate. At the time of the movie this has been going on for 17 years. Rich people live at the front of the train in luxury, poor people at the back in squalor. The movie is about a revolt and attempt to take ove the train for better treatment.

Sound ridiculous, yes it is if you think about it too much. if you just go with the flow of the film it kind of works.

All from Netflix
Gravdigr • Mar 5, 2015 3:51 pm
'Snowpiercer' was not as bad as I was expecting it to be. My buddy can pick the worst movies.

Heh. Yep, that could take awhile.

I've been watching Person of Interest. I remember reading a plot synopsis back when it was first being promoted and thinking it sounded dreadful. Then the other week I read a review that piqued my interest, so I figured I'd give it a go.

Really liking it so far. Kind of reminds me a bit of Quantum Leap in some ways. I'm liking the interplay of the two main characters - and I'm liking the subplot of the police officer trying to figure out who he is.

I am up to ep 16 of Lost, season 1.

I do realise, given the various opinions I've heard expressed by people who stayed the course first time out, that I may end up hating it... but right now I am enjoying it.

I'd forgotten how brilliant that first season was. How original. And, I find it works well as binge tv - the timescale of their stay on the island feels more in keeping with the speed the story unfolds.

It's also, as ever, a slightly odd experience, watching something I watched 11 years ago. Like a kind of time travel. Every so often I find myself accessing how I was feeling and the atmosphere of my life whilst i was watching the first time around.

[eta] in my defence - on weekdays I am interspersing episodes of Lost with chunks of work. Over the weekend, however, I basically took up residence on the island.

I have been indulging my love of Asian Martial arts movies. Mostly Chinese, but I've hit some Korean and Japanese ones as well. Favorites have bee Ip Man (1, 2, and The Final Fight), The Divine Move (Korean), Flying Swords at Dragon Gate, Tai Chi Zero and Tai Chi Hero, Dragon, and Journey to the West. This is a small sample. I've probably watched 30 or so in the last couple of months.

Did a bit of a sci fi marathon... From worst to best:

Jupiter ascending: Lame story with boring characters, but nice visuals.
Ex Machina: It was fine, interesting but not well paced.
Chappie: LOVED IT. The premise seems simple, but it oversteps it by quite a bit, and it's so well done. A fantastic movie all around IMO (Although the amount of homage to Short Circuit might require suspension of disbelief... At the fact it's not a short circuit remake...). Can't wait to see Neill Blomkamp's take on an Alien movie, the man is brilliant.

I more or less feel the same. Though I feel Elysium was a decent sci-fi action flick and it's a pretty good viewing experience if you are willing to take it for what it is rather then curve it out of the expectations that might come with the words "From the maker of District 9".

BTW, he is current working on the new Alien movie... I think the reaction to that will be interesting, because that franchise as a whole is often revered as a masterful piece of art with very little in the way of political or philosophical statements (At least not beyond "Corporations are evil"), but more so for it's psychology, aesthetics & executions. I think this might give him an opportunity to bring forth his strengths in those areas, in a work where politicizing the franchise would probably do more harm then good.
it • Jun 24, 2015 8:56 am
And on the subject of sci-fi:
Dark Matters sounded really interesting in concept, but kind looks rubbish, like an unintended parody of low budget 90s scifi shows.
KillJoys sounded like generic cliche trash in concept, but the first episode was really well done, it actually might have potential.

I'm looking forward to it with reserved enthusiasm in case it is horrible. It creates a dialectic between my respect for him and my general feeling taht re-makes are the resort of the unimaginative. As you allude to, what else can be added to the conversation?

I recently re-watched "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with the inch as the first part of the double feature re-release/re-make of the same. About 45 minutes into the re-make we had to stop for some reason. Up to that point I felt the plot holes created by trying to update the film in light of modern technology were distracting. Eventually, I got to the reveal of the updated message. The first film was a warning about the dangers of unchecked aggression in the new nuclear age and the update was about the dangers of unchecked climate destruction in the new ozone-free CO2 enriched age.

Plus, Keanu Reeves is somewhat one dimensional, and while that may be an advantage when playing an extra-terrestrial, it didn't really work for me.
it • Jun 25, 2015 9:36 am
Wait it's a reboot? I thought it's supposed to be Alien 2.5, Or the new Alien 3 with Alien 3 & 4 becoming 4 & 5... Or Alien 5 with Prometheus 1 & 2 becoming Alien 1 & 2? Or just Alien 5 after Alien 4 but styled like Aliens 2? Or a midboot continuing a new timeline from after Aliens 2? Or a new ending For Ripley's part in the franchise replacing Aliens 3? And where is it in the predator time line? And will leviathan now be part of the franchise? And why did prometheus need to introduce faster then light travel? Wasn't the whole point of cryosleep an alternative to FTL?And why did they still have cryochambers when they were in FTL and didn't experience time at all? And who the fuck hired Keanu Reeves to play in the new aliens movie? Or was that just a separate segment about the earth stood still?

The Leftovers

I stayed clear of this when it first came out because I didn't find the idea of the rapture all that intriguing - but then I got into Damon Lindelof's work and started to take a little more notice. Reading about it, I realised I'd misunderstood the premise anyway.

Watched the first episode a few weeks back and it had enough going on to suggest it might be worth watching - but a disturbing air about it that made me think it might be a difficult series to watch - wasn't sure if I could stay with something so bleak. I also realised I was still way too hung up on Lost to give it its due.

Cut to a few nights ago and I decided to try again. I'm now on episode 5 and really starting to click with it.

I do have some issues with Chris Eccleston's American accent. But his performance is so good otherwise, that I'm starting to go with it.

Finished watching an anime called Planetes...

I am not really a regular anime watcher, but this was well done. There is very little to no story arch except towards the end except for maybe some limited character growth... It's a genre called "slice of life" which just what it sounds like, except in this case it's done in an obnoxiously realistic setting that takes into account pretty much everything space-life related, starting from the diapers.

It did make me realize there is a sub-genre of sci fi which isn't very well defined: NowPunk. When a piece of sci-fi is so hard on mohs scale of sci fi hardness, it is for all extents and purposes asking what would it be like if we would be doing X with today's technology.
As far as sci-fi tries to be futurology (Which it often does try and fall on the ground only to remind us it never had the responsibility of doing that anyway), this is no better, except that instead of inventing fantastic applied punbrum, it marks itself for failure by depicting a nearby future that has remarkably avoided to develop new technologies or make new discoveries, despite clearly depicting a society quite invested in science in technology. Much like SteamPunk, it aims to explore the physically possible but the economically and socially improbable - what we could be doing, but can't really afford to do or organize well enough as a society to actually gather the resources and initiative to do it.

Steve Carell, Keira Knightly, and like a dozen awesome B-list comedians. Freaking hiliarious, and a little touching at the end. Even if there was one gigantic plot hole I could not in good conscience overlook, it was still worth it.

Yesterday I watched the first episode of Sense8. I was a bit dubious about it, when I read the premise when it was first being talked about, and when I saw the promos, though I was also intrigued. I've been through the Lost experience since then, so the presence of Naveen Andrews became more of a pull for me.

As pilots go it was pretty impressive. It was a little difficult to follow in places, but I didn't really mind that - it gave enough context to get a hook on the story and characters and keep me interested. Unlike a lot of pilots I found myself quite quickly invested in a number of the characters. and whilst some of the mood sequences were a little overlong, I thought they did a lot of really interesting stuff in terms of visual tone. I liked the way the narrative jumped between the main characters, and how they were visually and thematically linked - really got a sense that we were moving between them in an organic fashion that, presumably, mirrors the way these people are mentally linked.

Some nicely brave choices too. A scene in which two young women shag, with Freema Agyemon wearing a strap on? That ain't something you see every day. The fact that it didn't seem gratuitous or uncouth is interesting - it was treated like any other love scene on a show. We later find out (in a really nice and low key way) that Agyemon's girlfriend is a transwoman.

What I love about this couple is that whilst them being a lesbian and transwoman is obviously a part pf who they are - a big part, as they are activists and very into the Pride scene - it's not what the show is focused on. The show is focused on the relationship between them as two people in love. It isn't treated any differently to any other love-match you might see on tv. And both are recognisable, engaging and relatable characters in a relationship that feels real and organic.

I really like the cop too. Though his storyline included some of the clumsier attempts at social commentary (or maybe clumsy is the wrong word - I liked what they were saying, but there was a bit of a sense of being clubbed over the head with it). Couldn't figure out where I'd seen him before but knew I'd seen him in something I liked. Was thinking maybe BSG? I could see him in a uniform of some sort - gave up in defeat and googled him : Stargate Universe! I remember now.

And really, really liked the Indian girl. The scene where she goes to the temple to make offerings was so well played.

So - yeah - I wasn't really expecting anything all that great with this show - but the pilot really impressed me.

Not sure if you caught this in the credits, but the showrunners are the Wachowskis, one of whom is transgender.

We enjoyed the series, and are eagerly awaiting season 2, but I have to admit that the Freema Agyemon character quickly became our least favorite. It's not her fault, the writers give her lots of cutesy/dingbat lines. Nothing interesting happens with her, she just keeps tagging along in her girlfriend's story.

The German thief and the Mexican soap opera star got the best storylines in the season overall, IMHO.

@ Clod: yeah, I noticed that it was the Wachowskis. I'd forgotten about Lana W.

I'm enjoying the Mexican soap opera storyline. I'm also really liking the Korean kickboxing business woman.

The cop too I find engaging.

Freema's character took a back seat in the ep I just watched. She only appeared in a flashback to her saying she'll burn the hospital down.

The actor playing her girlfriend is awesome. She totally sells the creeping horror of being confined in that room - wondering if she really is losing her mind.

Last night I watched the second episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The first episode(first part of a two episode pilot), which I watched last week left me a bit cold. I was not overly eager to continue with it. But then I figured I should at least watch the full opening story to get a sense of the show.

Second part was more watchable. A couple of the characters became a lot more relatable. I still find it hard to care about most of them though. Hawkman and Hawkgirl - jesus they were annoying as hell in Arrow, and they're annoying as hell in this. Hawkman in particular is thoroughly unlikable. They have zero chemistry. They're supposed to be ancient lovers caught in a cycle of reincarnation, ever drawn back to each other, fated to find each other and then die each time, killed by the same man that killed them the first time, and who became immortal in the process. All three of these characters are complete wank. Which is unfortunate, given that the guy who kills them is the big bad of the whole show. But back to the total lack of chemistry between Mr and Ms Hawk.: zero, nada, not a single spark. And he is so wooden. I think he only has the one facial expression or tone of voice. A kind of one situation fits all approach to acting. Not sure if he thinks this is coming across as stoic.

Spoiler below:

I was cheering when he got killed.

I think it's pretty poor fayre, though I might watch one or two more to see how it looks when it finds its groove. I'd like it to get good, because I like Arthur Darvill. But I have my doubts.

Just watched the first episode of War and Peace. Really good stuff. I've never read the book. I wasn't particularly drawn to the tv adaptation, because I generally don;t much go in for period dramas - but Jan reminded me that it's a different angle on a conflict I am used to seeing from a british, or French perspective. So, I was only really watching for the Russian POV on the Napoleonic Wars - but it grabbed me straight away. Well cast, great acting, nippy dialogue and a nice deft touch to the direction.

The battle scenes are sparingly used, but my did they do a good job. Very impressive.

I got to the end of the first episode and was instantly tempted to go straight into the second episode. That's as good a sign for a show as I know.

Did season one only have 6 episodes?

Anyway, I plowed through season 2

There are some hilarious parts and the cast is great. Amy Poehler is so funny. I just watched Sisters and laughed my ass off and wanted to see more of Amy so I got Parks and Rec. It is funny that Megan Mulally, who is Nick Offerman's wife and played his wife, looks so much like Tina Fey. I thought it was her but her face was a little bit saggy and I just figured that Tina Fey had had a face lift since then,

I'm hoping it will keep me occupied until Dr. Who and Vikings, and GOT come out.

Just watched Groundhog Day with the kids. They had never seen it before. It's a little sappy with the love story in there, but otherwise a pretty good one.

It's one of our favorites here. We talk about time and reincarnation and try to imagine how many tens or hundreds of thousands of times he repeated that day to not only learn piano and become familiar with all the minutia of the town but to evolve emotionally as a person.
Clodfobble • Apr 1, 2016 11:39 am
Technically already mentioned it in my list of shows a few days ago, but it's deserving of another mention. "Flaked" with Will Arnett is very, very, very good. I've watched the whole first season twice now. Do not go in expecting his typical character-actor silliness. It's a slow burn that is well worth the payoff.
DanaC • May 7, 2016 3:01 pm
I just googled 'Flaked' - Kirstie Alley is in it? I havent seen her in anything for ages. Might give it a go, looks good.

I watched Chris Hardwick's comedy central special night before last - and again today. Best standup I've seen in ages. I laughed out loud. I highly recommend it to dwellars. Very funny.

I can only find a little clip, which is in no way the best of it. Seriously, do yourself a favour - it's brilliant.

Kirstie Alley is only in one episode, admittedly. But she's very entertaining.
Gravdigr • May 29, 2016 3:22 pm
Recently watched the BBC series "River". It's a six parter dealing with (Swedish transplant) London police Detective Inspector John River, whose (female) partner has just been murdered. He sees her and talks to her, and she talks to him, even though she's quite dead. He sees dead people.

It starts pretty slowly, painfully so at times, and I almost didn't watch any more after the first episode, but, it grew on me. Quickly. At the end of the sixth and final episode, it was over way too soon.

Starring Stellan Skarsgård and Nicola Walker.

8 out of 10
Clodfobble • May 29, 2016 4:21 pm
Maria Bamford's new series "Lady Dynamite."

It's a bit absurdist, and absolutely fucking hiliarious. Mr. Clod and I are both cackling through every episode--yet if I were to try to describe any of the jokes here, they wouldn't sound funny at all. But they are, they are. You just have to watch it. Trust me.
Gravdigr • Jun 15, 2016 10:45 am
Just finished a three hour documentary on one of my favorite bands, "The History of The Eagles".

Positively loved it.

From how they named the band (it involves peyote buttons), to how the songs were titled/written/conceived. Just a great, great documentary.

My favorite quote:

So, I'm riding shotgun with a drug dealer in a Corvette, on our way to a poker game...

second season. with the guy with the mask.

I mean, how the hell did he get in the backseat of the car? There is no way that someone would sneak into my car when I'm sitting in the front seat. I'd hear the door open. Feel the breeze. I'd feel the car move when they put their weight in it. I'd hear the car door close.

It's entertaining, but cmon.

And there is no way a VW bus with 15 people in it is going to drive that fast and bounce over rough roads like that.

Arguably one of the best series ever. Funny, real...and Edie Falco. Plus I love the other actors. Seriously grav, stick with this one. IMHO, it never sells out, not even at the very last episode. I've watched it through twice.

So many series start out good, then fizzle. Or start out 'meh' then fizzle. That annoys me. The market is SO saturated and, they're not all good. I've tried so many that just don't 'take' with me. Nurse Jackie is up there, for me, with Six Feet Under, the Wire, Breaking Bad, Oz, and The Sopranos. There are a lot of other series I've liked, but those are the tops, to me.

And, Edie Falco. (did I repeat that out loud twice?)
Clodfobble • Aug 2, 2016 3:47 pm
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

This show was 100% made for me. It's a musical! With twisted dark humor! And it's kind of a romantic comedy but mostly it's a farce but the characters have legitimate mental problems that they don't shy away from.

Infi, you would LOVE it. LJ, you probably would. Glatt's 50/50, I can't decide if the music would be too much or not. Everyone else, I dunno. It's pretty earnest, which is a turnoff for many.
Gravdigr • Aug 2, 2016 4:20 pm
Binged four or five episodes (Nurse Jackie) early this morning. Just started season 3. My favorite character besides Jackie, is 'Zoey'. I love the actress that plays her, and I love the character, this is the only thing I've seen her in. I like 'Thor' a lot, too. Even the hospital administrator, Mrs. Akalitus, is growing on me.

Everyone in this thing, I like.

Except Jackie's husband. Never liked that guy in anything I've seen him in. I think it's his eyes. I wouldn't trust that guy (the actor, nor the character) any farther than I could throw a truck.

But, yeah, Nurse Jackie...:jig:

Just about done with the original CSI and up to about season 15 of South Park. After that, going back to DVD a while because I have the first 5 seasons of Game of Thrones to occupy me until Dr. Strange and Godzilla Resurgence hit US theaters in the fall.
elSicomoro • Aug 14, 2016 1:03 pm
I ran through all of South Park while I was unemployed last year. I never ceased to be amazed with the creativity of Parker and Stone.

I finished season 3 of Todd Margaret last night, then I watched Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru. If you watched the first 2 seasons of Todd Margaret, the 3rd one will throw you for a loop, but it's good. The Tony Robbins doc...very interesting. I was familiar with him and his work, but not very deeply. He seems to be very good at what he does.

Undertoad • Oct 12, 2016 9:23 am

His character's deep awkwardness in SL&V was supposed to creep you out, that's why it did. That was a brilliant portrayal of a broken person...

Spader is one of my favorite actors. It's a little odd, because I couldn't stand him before Boston Legal. I absolutely loved his character in Boston Legal. Blacklist [strike]is[/strike] was pretty good, I haven't seen it in a couple seasons, though.

He plays awkward very well. Re: Stargate (the movie).

I finally got through Stranger Things a few days ago. Loved it. They did a really good job with that one.

There was one point though when a teenage girl decides to crawl into a small slime filled hole in a tree. That seemed unrealistic.
Gravdigr • Nov 18, 2016 12:42 pm
I recently finished up "Planet Earth: The Complete Collection" (Netflix). I liked how the series was divided, the 11 episode titles are:

From Pole To Pole
Mountains
Fresh Water
Caves
Deserts
Ice Worlds
Great Plains
Jungles
The Shallow Seas
Seasonal Forests
Ocean Deep

All were very interesting, but, I think "Caves" was my favorite. They touched on a fish that lives only in caves. Not only that, but, it only lives in waterfalls, waterfalls found in caves. And even more wtf, is that this fish does not live in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall inside a cave, nor does it live above the falls. It lives in the free-fall zone of the waterfall-inside-a-cave, gripping rocks, and climbing, with specialized fins. I want to say it's called a cave angelfish, but, I'm not sure that's correct.

I've also watched some of The Ranch (Netflix, and a Netflix Original, as well). It reunites Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson from That 70s Show, and also stars Sam Elliott, Debra Winger, and Elisha Cuthbert.

Having all those stars, you'd think it wouldn't have any choice but to be good. It's awful. It's so bad, it's good. It's either not rehearsed at all, or it's the most over-rehearsed show in history.

Oh, and ladies, ya get to see Sam Elliott in his tidy-whiteys in the second episode. You are welcome.
I recently finished up "Planet Earth: The Complete Collection" (Netflix).

I think the BBC is currently filming and/or airing either Planet Earth 2 or Life 2. I have Life and love it love it love it.

I'm gonna cry forever when David Attenborough dies.

We've managed to crawl to about mid-Season 7 of Supernatural, and I've seen the first I think 4 eps of Stranger Things which I am enjoying because the kids are just kids, not annoying plot points. Neighbor and I are also binging on Forensic Files...it's like potato chips for the science-loving parts of our brains! 13+ seasons of 23-minute case histories--some of which are VERY familiar because neighbor and I have watched ALL of CSI Vegas, Miami, and New York, 7 seasons of Bones, All of Law & Order original, SVU, and CI, and most of the original NCIS.

On an unrelated note, coupla years back I was watching a favorite awful creature feature from the 70s (or very very early 80s) called Frogs. The photographer in the canoe looked SO familiar...bout drove me crazy until it hit me..."Wait, why is that brown-haired fella wearing Sam Elliott's eyebrows???" Cuz it's 30-year-old-ish Sam Elliott, who I actually did not recognize without silver hair! He never gets stripped down that I can think of offhand in that one, but I think he falls in the river a couple times.

My sweetie and I have been lurking on Hulu for South Park, The Goldbergs, and Scream Queens, and on YouTube for WatchMojo, CinemaSins, and How It Should Have Ended.
Gravdigr • Dec 26, 2016 4:17 pm
"Frogs"...seen it. Great old creature feature.
Snakeadelic • Dec 30, 2016 9:23 am
Gravdigr, we have a special fondness in our twisted little hearts for creature features :D. We own movies we thought no one had ever heard of! Someone in a chat once tried (and admittedly, it was a helluva good try) to impress me by telling me his girlfriend's favorite creature feature was 'Black Sheep'. Unfortunately he flunked the midterm because he'd never even heard of 'Food of the Gods' (which I will never watch again--too much illegal animal snuff) or 'Night of the Lepus'. Many movie fans identify 'Troll 2' as the worst creature feature ever made.

We own it. And the first one! Most horror fans we've talked to didn't know there really WAS a first one. I have most of the snake features, up to and including 'Snakes on a Train'. The only one I'll never own is 'Stanley'--once again, too much animal snuff although it was made RIGHT before the Humane Society started supervising animal actors of any kind.

As for recent obscure stuff, I did kind of like 'Europa Report'. Also 'Apollo 18'. Mostly, for creature features, these days we watch lots of Godzilla and my neighbor's about to launch a major "Find me Ray Harryhausen movies!" campaign.

I've heard good things about Luke Cage, but he's gonna have to get in line. My "I finally spent my birthday & Christmas gift cards" movie order showed up yesterday :D. Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man...and Big Trouble, a movie that manages to be almost as funny as the book despite starring Tim Allen. Of course, it also has Dennis Farina, Patrick Warburton, Heavy D, and Janeane (sp? It's 7:15 and I haven't been sleeping well, too lazy to look it up) Garofolo. It's about the whole arc of computer technology from 1980 to... the present day I guess, eventually. They've made it to 1990 so far. The period-piece aspects of it are solid, but not overdone. The tech is accurate. But like all good shows, it's really about the relationships, y'know.

Trial and error is pretty fucking funny. The casting is perfect, they've got great comic instincts. Shot in a documentary style, around the murder of the wife of a kooky poet played by John Lithgow. Steven Boyer is hilarious as the dim-witted assistant investigator, a former cop who was filmed on dash cam shooting his patrol car full of holes as it rolls away from him during a traffic stop because he forgot to put on the brake.

The editing of the trailer destroys the perfect comic timing that is one of the great things about the show. The trailer makes it seem hyper.

Finally started "Luke Cage". One episode in, I'm not sure I'm gonna like it. Does it get better? I have the feeling it was just a slow build up, but, I just don't know. I kinda like how the first episode ended.

Luke, having just stopped a bullet in his hand and stomped a couple of thugs, saying, to the fourth (?) thug: "You want some?"

4th thug, who, along with Luke, and the other thugs, is a black gentleman (and I'm just quoting): "Man, I don't even like these niggas.", and leaves.

Hasan Minhaj's new standup special is fan-fucking-tastic. Highly, highly, highly recommend.

Dear White People is pretty good, a little stereotypical but at least they cover all the stereotypes.

Silicon Valley is still ballin'.

Westworld is okay, beautiful but we've seen every plot twist coming a mile away.

The Expanse is okay, less aesthetic than Westworld but with better political and character intrigue.

Animals is surprisingly engaging. Has the look of a raunchy adult cartoon and yet is weirdly heartfelt.

Neil Patrick Harris' A Series of Unfortunate Events is awesome. One of the few shows my kids like that I also like.

Oh, and Mr. Clod had me sit through one episode of Riverdale with him. That show is dead to me.

Danger 5. Season one was the perfect send up of 60s era spy shows. Season 2, I like a bit less. It takes place in the 80s and is also a perfect re-creation of the 80s shows like Miami Vice. I think part of the reason I dislike it it is that it is the 80s to a T. Too much coke, sexual violence and objectification of women at an all time high, heavy keyboard synth, and an atrocious color palette. In other words, they nailed the 80s.

I'm up to season 2 of Archer. It's hilarious. I now have a thing for black chicks, I never did before.

ALSO watched on Netflix, Skip Trace, a Jackie Chan movie (#guiltypleasure) with Johnny Knoxville. Mr Knoxville has always irritated me as an actor since his performance in Men In Black. Nothing personal, or professional, I just disliked his character in that movie and that kind of stuck with me as I watched his other performances. He's redeemed himself in this movie.

Jackie Chan is aging well. His acrobatic talent is undiminished though we don't see any bare-torso inverted situps in this one. He's often had a ... thread of travelogue in his movies, showing the specific details of a location and this movie is a perfect vehicle for this as he travels from Siberia through Mongolia to Hong Kong. I won't spoil it for you, but the scene with the Mongolian horse nomads is a delightful blend of documentary and comedy. Knoxville's character asks him at one point "Are you Wikipedia all the time?"

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Watched Memento with the kids on Sunday night. It mesmerized them, but having seen it before, I was noticing little irritants in the story. Things that made the movie work well, but that didn't seem so realistic when you piece the story back together into its correct order and think about character motivation based on what they knew at the time.

Now I need to find a fan produced version of the movie where they re-edit it back into the correct order. Such an animal has to exist on You-Tube. It would be super easy to make. And would probably be fairly short, compared to the run-time of the actual movie.

I've been rewatching Series 8 and 9 of Doctor Who (as well watching the current series 10) - I have reassessed series 8 and enjoyed it much more in the light of what came next than I did at the time.

But that's by the by and for the Doctor thread -

Since Capaldi obsession has hit I decided to go rewatch The Thick of It.

It stands up very well. I do think it's probably the best political satire in several decades. It feels as relevant to today's political scene as yesterday's.

Vikings!!!

Awesome.

I have to grit my teeth a little every time they show the English - that aspect is fucking ridiculous - seriously, the Kingdom of Northumbria, and they've got posh southern accents and demeanor - their soldiers wear uniforms and have an 'officer class' who stay at the back while the men fight - so much wrongness. The saxons would have been much more like the Vikings in many ways - no uniforms, and the housecarls of the king would have been full on warriors, leading from the front, not standing back and strategising like a modern general. At this stage saxon kings were still ring-givers - very similar culturally to what we see of the vikings when they are in the company of the Earl.

Game of Thrones is a more realistic depiction of Northern England, and that's complete fantasy.

Anyhoo --- that nonsense aside, it is a fantastic show.Loving Ragnar - also really love Loki.

And the only English character so far who has anything about him, Athelstan - is great.

Grav, try GLOW on Netflix. You will like it, I promise.

Me, I just binged the first season of "The Good Place" on Hulu. It's a weird show. Great dialogue and comedic timing, weird-as-shit plot and aesthetics. I kind of didn't want to like it but also kept watching because it was undeniably funny. Like a cult classic that happens to be new, except that means the "it's bad because it's old" justification isn't actually there. It's good if you like absurdist stuff, or like a John Waters visual style.

OMG season 3 of Daredevil is the dog's bollocks.

I watched the entire thing across 4 nights.

Quite possibly the best superhero tv I've seen yet.

Worth watching for the amazing single take fight scene alone, but there're are so many good things.

|the key - the thing they got right in S1, got wrong in S2 and got right again in S3 is a compelling villain.

There were very few disposable characters in this season - most of them were given enough time to build and breathe and feel fully realised. that makes the whole thing matter so much more. You want Daredevil to win - but you also feel for the ones he is fighting and that makes for a very different experience to last season's ludicrous 'Hand; storyline

Just visually as well, it is beautiful to watch.

Finished Rectify a couple weeks ago. Good, but lots of loose ends at the finale. I got the feeling they were canceled and had to wrap things up in a hurry.

Watched Collateral (no, not the Tom Cruise flick, this is a British limited series). It fell flat for me.

Rewatching Ken Burns' The West,, and Welles in The Third Man.

Blazing Saddles is currently on the menu:devil:

Watched Ron White's new Netflix stand-up thing. Funneh in spots but, overall you won't miss much. He had a good bit about going to Vegas the same week as the sex toy convention, and the names of the manufacturers represented, none of which were real (Johnson & Johnson, Johnson's, Knob Cobblers), and a bit about the baby-duck-pussy-lip-tacos being served at the Beverly Hills hotel where he was staying. It was absolutely filthy, and he was very drunk, fucked up a couple of punchlines. It's called "If You Stop Listening, I'll Shut Up", or something like that.

I was very disappointed by Frontier. Very disappointed.

I just went through this with The Red Road. First season was pretty meh. The second season was much better. The Sundance Channel canceled it after S2, so, like The Mist, no ending or wrap up. And that last episode...total cliffhanger!

I read that The Red Road was The Sundance Channel's second scripted show, the first being Rectify, which I thought was really good. TRR was getting pretty good, too.

YMMV, but I suspect if you continue, you'll be surprised. It gets quite dark. It has plenty of muppety moments scattered throughout, and some very muppety voices (Simon Pegg duplicates the original Chamberlain voice quite well), but once it sets the cutesy fantasy scenes in the beginning, everything starts to go wrong.

But if you don't have any nostalgia for Henson and the original Dark Crystal, maybe it's too hard to get past the muppetiness.
Happy Monkey • Sep 3, 2019 6:07 pm
I also enjoyed Carnival Row, but there was something about the plot where, even though it did resolve the overarching season plotline, it felt like it was just the beginning. Or a sort of tour through an amazing feat in worldbuilding*. Luckily, it has been renewed already, so maybe it will get a chance to be a bit more plot-forward.

* ETA: The worldbuilding is so extensive I had to double check that it isn't based on a long series of novels.

Another vote for Escape to the Chateau.

Dick Strawbridge seems to be able to tackle pretty much any problem that requires a practical approach or an engineering background.

It was quite an education (for me) when he restored the sunken greenhouse in the walled garden.

However, all that French food does seem to be taking its toll on his girth!

RFN:

A ZZTop concert recorded live in Texas in, I think it said, 2010, via Roku. So far it's kicked ass.

The mic stands, and Beards drum kit, are styled like semi truck exhaust stacks. The cymbal nuts (or whatever ya call those things that tighten the cymbals down) appear to be billiard balls.

Two stacks of six fairly large Crate amps on a fairly small stage, with about six-and-a-half-jillion leds for a backdrop, in front of what looks to be a couple thousand ppls.

That little ol' band from Texas be rockin'.

xoxoxoBruce • Jan 17, 2020 3:22 pm
The last time I saw them live the background looked like a '57 Chevy dashboard with analog gages. The second half of the show the gages were digital. Very cool.
Gravdigr • Jan 19, 2020 1:56 pm
ZZ Top projects a cool factor that nobody else can touch.

That was a simple, good show.

BTW, it was damn sight more than "a couple thousand ppls".

The Motor Trend show Roadkill. My fav episode was when they had to choose a city, and buy a car and get home on $1500. They threw a dart at a map to choose the city. El Paso. Home is in Los Angeles. I liked that premise. That's a show, right there. Most episodes revolve around reviving an actual junkyard relic and making it drive. I think it's moved from YouTube to Motor Trend On Demand, as Roadkill Garage, which is to be paid for, but, not by me.

Also been watching Star Trek: Voyager with bated eyes waiting for Seven of Nine to show up.

Started S1:E1 of I Am NOT Okay With This. First line in the show: "Dear Diary, Go fuck yourself." I might like this show.

Re-watched Dirty Harry for like the eleventy-twelfth time a few nights ago.

It's very good. I like being able to critique and be right. their wheel skills are formidable though. I can throw, but not like that

Just finished Castlevania seasons one and two on Netflix. It was excellent. I have zero history with the game and just picked up with it as its own material. The animation was good, looks hand drawn as opposed to say, RWBY. I was quite surprised to notice one of the little progress markers during my watching, S2E6. ????? Where was the end of season one? I didn't go back to find out, but I can't think of what "cliffhanger" event might have marked the end of the first season. There is a third season available now and I'm looking forward to it.

I just cancelled my DisneyPlus subscription. I don't think we have watched anything on it in the last month. The greedy bastards haven't released the new Star Wars on it yet, choosing instead to try to get people to buy it. Maybe I'll sign back up again when the next season of the Mandalorian comes out.

My wife was saying last night that the way to manage these subscription services is to watch everything they have for a month or two and then cancel, and subscribe to something else. I think she's onto something. Maybe HBO is next for us. What's good on HBO?
BigV • Apr 24, 2020 1:00 pm
Lots.

Westworld, definitely start at season one.

The Outsider, Stephen King f*cking with your head, again.

Last Week Tonight, John Oliver's weekly deep dive into and through the BS.

Chernobyl, exactly what it says on the tin.

Big Little Lies *, powerful performances by some amazing actors. Pretty difficult watch in places.

True Blood *, sexy vampires.

Barry *, Bill Hader and Henry Winkler perform brilliantly in dramatic roles.

* I'd gone to the app to refresh my memory and found that these titles, which I've watched and enjoyed are listed as "Stream for Free, No Subscription Required". Huh. Check them out, there really is a ton of material there, maybe you can defer subscribing and still binge your brains out. But even the few at the top are worth at least a "free month" or whatever strategy works for you. Westworld will blow your mind.

I was surprised at just how well the adaptation worked. Helped by pitch perfect casting. I just cannot imagine anyone else as Crowley and Aziraphael and Jon Hamm was an inspired choice as the face of heaven's management.

Despite some changes (Hamm's character has a much bigger role in the show for instance) It feels so true to the source material in terms of atmosphere and quirkiness - I am delighted.

The book has a very special place in my heart so I was a little worried when I first heard there was to be an adaptation

Carnivale was one of my favorite shows of all time. Traveling carnival in the dust bowl during the depression, ensemble cast, mostly shot during the golden hour. Cost too much to make, didn't take off in the US (it did in Europe), had to wrap up in two seasons instead of more (five I think was the original arc).

Blade Runner 2049 is a brilliant sequel to the original 1982 movie. A masterpiece, I think (like the original). Watch it more than once. Seeing the original again helps.

"Jack Ryan" was mentioned earlier. Outstanding!

"Deadwood" was mentioned. A lot more than Timothy Olyphant in there. Even a movie sequel was made, finally.

"Firefly" was mentioned. Great series. Outstanding movie version was Serenity.

And we recently finished "After Life". Listen. This is the best thing I've seen on television I can remember. I used to regard Ricky Gervais as Don Rickles' Mini Me. Crude and mean with occasional interruptions of laughter. No more. I take it all back. "After Life" was written and directed by Gervais and he appears in almost every frame. His range is complete, I cried. There were tears of sadness and breathtaking gales of laughter, including tears. Twil had to stop the program on multiple occasions and wait for me to compose myself, rewinding to the point where I'd lost it so I could hear the next bit....

Bring tissues. Drink carefully, it might get spat out or choked on. Most of all, enjoy.

We saw Hamilton a couple years ago when it came to the Kennedy Center, but it was the travel show and was not the original cast. It was ok then, but the original cast last night was really really good. Almost like a different show.
