July 22, 2012 - Skull Mountain

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this picture is worth many thousands of bison. This photo from the 1870s shows a man proudly standing in front of a mountain of tens of thousands of bison skulls - an iconic American species that was systematically slaughtered by the millions as European Americans settled the west.

The US Army actively endorsed the wholesale slaughter of these animals for two main reasons: to remove any competition with cattle, and to starve Native American tribes who greatly depended on the bison for food. Without the bison, the resisting tribes of the Great Plains would either be forced to leave or die of starvation.

More than a century after this dark period in our history, the bison is making a comeback. After living on the brink of extinction, this American icon is slowly but steadily returning to the Great Plains - one baby bison at a time. You can watch a video of how Native American communities and conservation groups like Earthjustice are fighting to bring back the bison

Don't forget Ted Turner in Montana

My wife buys bison meat at a local supermarket fairly regularly,
so it is becoming a profitable business for Oregon ranchers.

What I like best about the American buffalo?
The Latin name is bison bison.

KISS.

I know of two Bison farms in Lancaster County, PA. There are probably more.
Most of those skulls came from professional hunters, at first for the hides, then somebody figured out they could grind the bones for fertilizer. The meat still was wasted for the most part, though.

About a month ago I read an article in one of my hunting mags, that cast a new light on the whole bison-wiped-out-by-man situation.

I'll see if I can find it.

I found my copy of the magazine, but, couldn't find the article online.

I may copy it for your perusal.

Later though, I got a funeral to go to. I put the 'fun' in funeral.

Believe me when I say, if I had known the number, and if I hadn't left my phone in the car, I would've totally called him!

Right in the middle of 'The Old, Rugged Cross'.

P.S. Dear Cancer, Fuck you.

When I die, want you to dress me in straght laced shoes
A box back coat and a Stetson hat;
Put a twenty-dollar gold piece on my watch chain
So the boys know I died standin' pat.

Sounds like the deceased beat you to it Gravdigr. e.g. putting the 'fun in it'.

Cue highly inappropriate (or appropriate, depending) musical ring tone.

There must be some, somewhere, because they sell buffalo meat at Whole Foods.
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 28, 2012 9:30 am
There are, several national parks and a shitload of private herds.
Griff • Jul 28, 2012 12:32 pm
Yep. McMurtry is using the lack of true free ranging (not free range™) buffalo as a metaphor for growing up or old or giving up the illusion of freedom. Or its just a song.
