I agree that dogs rule (and drool), Bruce. But cats rule too ...

My Siamese queen not only had three litters of exquisite, super-smart kittens - she can turn faucets on and off to give herself a drink, she opens lever doors (both pushing and pulling) even though she's too short to reach from the floor and has to leap onto the lever and use her body weight to move it, after which she leaps down and pushes or pulls the door open; and she hears me coming down the hall in my apartment building and is calling before I put the key in the door (no, she doesn't do this for other people in the hall). She isn't big enough to carry laundry, but she sits on my lap and touches my face gently with her paw while gazing into my eyes.

Seriously.

She's a queen and she rules. :)

(I have also had a wonderful chocolate Lab who was the sweetest, dumbest dog in the world; she answered to any name you cared to call her, couldn't find her way out from under a blanket, never learned to retrieve - and we all loved her dearly to the day she died ... still miss her. RIP, Molly.)

I'm totally not sure at all that cats are less intelligent than dogs, i'm just very sure that they are almost completely un-trainable. They can LEARN, but if they can't see the self-benefit in doing something, you can't ever ever convince them to do it.

That's not true in all cases, Ibby. For a long time, Siamese cats have been selectively bred as human companions. They are very dependent on human company and pine and become depressed if separated from their owners/companions. They come when called, know their names, play fetch, etc. They're smart, but the reason they do all the aforementioned things is that they are VERY attached to people. They will jump into the bath or shower with you if they feel neglected (i.e. if they didn't get to sleep with you and keep you up all night kissing your face)!

Some cats don't give a fuck - but not Siamese. They rock. :)

I don't doubt that a cat could be taught "if you pick the right can when I say 'get me some canned manwich' you get a treat". I just highly doubt that any treat could convince any cat to undertake such a venture! EVEN if it's social and can't live without you - it'd sooner let you starve than get your groceries!

edit: and you say all that as if attention weren't an entirely self-serving venture to cats. My word was "self-benefit". Just because some cats crave constant attention doesn't meant they aren't doing it for them, not for you!

edit edit: also i say this as someone who would almost certainly sooner get a cat than a dog if my apartment allowed animals and it werent goddamn expensive to keep either

I adore cats and am only mildly tolerant of dogs.
But even I admit I would not trust Diz to do any basic chores for me, even if he could.

I know he is intelligent, but he is also sly, self-aggrandising, greedy and has a huge ego.
Nothing like my taste in men.

Carrot would win you around. He'd wag his tail and give nibbly kisses until you admitted he was awesome.

Whereas Diz would steal your soul and nibble on it with catbreath until you didn't want it back.

I guess those cats are smarter than I've given them credit for to date. For instance, how does that tiger know there's a piece of meat attached to the other end of that string???

Maybe because the rest of the string smells like rope-burned-flesh. Meat is about right.
