I've not seen such a pic of the aurora before, as #1 .
On a totally scientific hypothesis level, it might be the pointy end of a spicule of the solar wind.

But I really think it is an ethereal, green, whale or shark... comin' to getcha.

I've seen the northern lights a couple times as a kid in Maine. Nothing like this though. Just seeing some slight brightness on the edge of the sky like there was a city just over the horizon, except I knew there was just wilderness there for hundreds of miles. It would be spectacular to see something like this.

Growing up in Northern Minnesota I have seen nights like picture 1 and 3. I have never seen a sky like number 2 though.

Well there was that one time but I am pretty sure it was chemically enhanced.
