Ur mad vocabularian skilz

http://www.merriam-webster.com/quiz/index.htm

Ten question vocabulary quiz with points awarded for difficulty and speed.

I average about 3400, my high score was 3750. The leader board has scores of 4200 and up. Those must be speed points because even when I get all ten words right I don't hit 3800.

They show average scores by age group. The 60 and up set have the best average scores. At either end the scores dip.

I'd say my skilz are furious, but not enraged. Certainly more than mad.
Lamplighter • Feb 18, 2012 10:12 am
3580 - lucky and surprisingly high for a 70+ - don't dare try again
footfootfoot • Feb 18, 2012 11:13 am
I would say 3580 would be considered Livid skilz.
Happy Monkey • Feb 18, 2012 11:51 am
3800
Sundae • Feb 18, 2012 12:34 pm
3940.
Knew all the words but I just don't have a good reaction time.
8 seconds usually, 9 seconds rarely. And I had to click twice on one of them.

I don't play computer games because of this (games-games I mean) because I just can't react fast enough. I'm sure I could improve my score with time, but I don't have the commitment.

Funz tho, thx.
BigV • Feb 18, 2012 1:25 pm
First pass through: 3680. I'm gonna figure out the keyboard shortcuts for this one. What a great game I lurve it. Thanks!!!

2740, missed one, that's the kiss of death.
3780

I got 3580 and that's with missing one.

I think I got almost all the bonus points, besides the missed one.

man, they always throw some fucker of a word like :

Oleaginous: Oily (Hardest) Your Answer: Chewy

at me. i can't break 3440.

go piss up a rope
Sundae • Feb 18, 2012 2:19 pm
Mulct I did not know. Never heard of.
Gauche is French for left. As is sinister in Latin.
I consider myself a cunning linguist. UG would disagree but I'm used to that ;)

(Oleaginous is often used to describe politicians and gameshow hosts)

I fared significantly more poorly on the other quizzes.
Some by simply being a furriner (True or False) and some by just not knowing what I was looking at (The Naming of the Parts or whatever it is called). By the time my brain had recognised the item I was almost out of time. I am not a visual person.
Griff • Feb 18, 2012 2:28 pm
First go-
Crepuscular - sumbitch new one to me
3000 with the one miss
footfootfoot • Feb 18, 2012 2:43 pm
Crepsucular is one of my favorite words!

From Edward Gorey:

There was a young sportsman named Peel
Who went for a trip on his wheel;
He pedalled for days
Through crepuscular haze,
And returned feeling somewhat unreal.
Lamplighter • Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm
Geeez, from some of the words you people got, I'm glad I only took the test once !

Crepsucular - my eyes would have seen that as corpuscular
Mulct - that would been mulch to me

I think I need to put my glasses on. I can't read the words fast enough. and I've always sucked at these kinds of tests anyway. I know the words, but I'm just too slow to make the connection in my brain.

I'm a very thoughtful person. :)
jimhelm • Feb 18, 2012 5:45 pm
mulct
noun
a sum of money to be paid as a punishment <the loan shark usually imposed a mulct of an additional 20% on overdue payments>

we call that a Vig in our lingo... banks ....bad credit banks... charge a fee to write a loan. they have different names for the fee. 'discount' or 'acquisition fee' or just 'bank fee' we all call it a Vig. Vig short for Vigorish

A fun thing would be to take the 10 words from your quiz and write a paragraph using all the words.

I would do it, but I'm too busy. Well, I will be busy. I'm commencin' to get busy.
footfootfoot • Feb 19, 2012 12:35 pm
How about this:

Yesterday my virtual friend, who raises mammoth Chihuahuas and miniature cows, took a quiz that contained the following words:
Dossier: File (Harder)
Efflorescence: Blossoming (Hardest)
Facet: Aspect (Medium)
Exposition: Explanation (Medium)
Doppelganger: Double (Harder)
Inadvertently: Unintentionally (Easier)
Draconian: Severe (Harder)
Extraneous: Unimportant (Medium)
Implicit: Implied (Easier)
Inadequate: Lacking (Easier)

Surprisingly, (only because she is blonde and has big tits) she did amazingly well and was invited to join the leaderboard, who could not have had any idea she is gorgeous, blonde, and has big tits. Go figure.
regular.joe • Feb 19, 2012 12:57 pm
I only scored 2780. Prolly cause I am strong like bull and smart like tractor.
Nirvana • Feb 19, 2012 3:23 pm
No food or beverage should pass one's lips while reading the cellar as one may choke on a guffaw! @F3

Heard a fellow describe his brother once...He said "He's strong as an ox, and almost as smart."

Today -due to inadequate attention- I inadvertently shredded the dossier full of the extraneous details about facets of the draconian measures taken by my doppleganger to facilitate my exposition as a dickhead. My idiocy was implicit and my cheeks had a certain efflorescence.

3120 on the first try with the average for my age class at 2640...
3600 on the third one...

Do I get bonus points since English is not my primary language ?

Yes!
