Look it up now

English Wikipedia will be shutting down Wednesday to protest SOPA.
BigV • Jan 16, 2012 3:25 pm
Ha.

I heard about that. This overreach reminds me of our recent enshrinement in law of indefinite detention. "Let's shut down a whole website because they have a link to copyrighted material." Such a grand all-encompassing law showcases the weakness of our faith in our legal system. With these laws, we invent new crimes.
Sundae • Jan 16, 2012 3:39 pm
Yay England.
Don't knowledge-tax on our Wiki!

Or something.
xoxoxoBruce • Jan 17, 2012 3:31 am
And Reddit, and boingboing, and many more.
SamIam • Jan 17, 2012 11:41 am
Actually, its the English language version of Wiki that's being shut down. So we can thank English speakers everywhere for a day of total confusion brought about by forced searches on Bing and other questionable search engines.

My last year or so working in the bar, a guy used to play that all the time, late in the night.

It always gets stuck in my ear.

From Pete's link:

Along with Reddit, Wikipedia joins huge Internet names like WordPress, Mozilla, and all of the Cheezburger properties in Wednesday’s “black out” protest.

Mozilla? Does that mean my browser will stop working tomorrow?

What about the Cellar? UT should probably shut that down for the day. (Just think how the world's productivity will improve for those 24 hours!)
infinite monkey • Jan 17, 2012 8:11 pm
Right about now (listening to the video) all the workers should be around the bar doing a quick shot of their choice.

Wikipedia main page, enter your zipcode, it links to email contact for your congressmen / representatives.

US Postal service website can provide your zipcode+4, if required.

This is what I sent to all concerned:
I strongly oppose the proposed legislation known as PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) / Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). If you support this legislation you will never again have my vote.

Passage of this legislation would be substantively destructive to the fundamental qualities of a modern, democratic society. The mechanisms by which this legislation attempts to accomplish its goals are ill-conceived and unsustainable. Supporting this legislation would put you on the wrong side of a extraordinarily momentous event in human history. Don’t make that mistake. Oppose PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) / Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

More than a doodle, there is a link from Google's main page to an online petition.
Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!

Is it bad that I pretty much copied and pasted your message to Senator Toomey?
I actually have an internal email address for him as we've gone round about some TBI issues.
Hope it gets read and ...

Anyone who agrees with what I said has my permission to copy/paste my message, if that encourages them to SEND AN EMAIL.

Thank you.

C'mon, Americans, please do this. Some of us don't even have a congressman.

No repression without representation!

A lot of sites are dark today. But, apparently, it's Virus Day over at StumbleUpon. Opened the page, and AVG immediately went apeshit.

If I already sit there and refresh the page when I've read everything, what makes you think I won't do the same just because the site's down?

Wikipeekee posted this message today:

Thank you.
The Wikipedia blackout is over — and you have spoken.

More than 162 million people saw our message asking if you could imagine a world without free knowledge. You said no. You shut down Congress’s switchboards. You melted their servers. Your voice was loud and strong. Millions of people have spoken in defense of a free and open Internet.

For us, this is not about money. It’s about knowledge. As a community of authors, editors, photographers, and programmers, we invite everyone to share and build upon our work.

Our mission is to empower and engage people to document the sum of all human knowledge, and to make it available to all humanity, in perpetuity. We care passionately about the rights of authors, because we are authors.

SOPA and PIPA are not dead: they are waiting in the shadows. What’s happened in the last 24 hours, though, is extraordinary. The Internet has enabled creativity, knowledge, and innovation to shine, and as Wikipedia went dark, you've directed your energy to protecting it.

We’re turning the lights back on. Help us keep them shining brightly
.
classicman • Jan 19, 2012 5:31 pm
Funny part is - The lights were always on.
All you had to do was hit the escape key and the site was yours for the browsing.
